History of Real-Time Strategy: The Downfall (2004 - 2010)

VGChatz's Taneli Palola: "There's no question that during these years the overall popularity of the genre took a significant hit, as most games within it specialized even further by adding new elements from other types of games into their gameplay loops and consequently became increasingly niche as the years wore on.

However, this doesn't in any way mean that the period was devoid of great games. Quite the contrary, in fact. Arguably some of the greatest RTS titles ever made came out around this time, and much of this was because many developers were increasingly familiar and comfortable with adding new twists and gameplay elements to the familiar formula. As such, even when the genre's popularity dwindled, many studios were still creating excellent and groundbreaking titles almost every year, just for a smaller audience than in years past."

those were fun years red alert star craft command and conquer well when westwood studio made good games before EA brought them like bioware...

Vegamyster1813d ago

Aside from C&C 4, the other C&C's from EA were all good/great. The genre nose dived once Moba's rose in popularity, even Petroglyph Games (ex-Westwood employees) haven't had a hit since Star Wars: Empire at War (2006), all there games got abandoned after launch.

Are the free Xbox Games With Gold titles for March 2016 any good?

Neil writes "The Xbox Games With Gold scheme for March 2016 is nearly in play, bringing four new free games for Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners. But is the program actually worth getting excited about? Are the Games With Gold titles for March 2016 actually any good, or is it just another waste of your precious download limits?

Well, March is most definitely going to be a bit of a slow burner, but it'll finish on a note that is higher than anything we've seen before."

Can't wait to get stuck into Sherlock again, it got lost in my backlog but having it on digital will encourage me to venture back in.

Dewitt2980d ago

Super excited for both as I have never played them. SH especially intrigues me.

UltraNova2979d ago

LOtF is a Dark Souls rip-off, in the good kind of way, albeit far easier ...that said its a pretty decent, yet short power fantasy light RPG with good visuals.

Now that's free its even better! Give it a try!

creeping judas2980d ago

Never felt like playing full price for Lords Of The Fallen, but I will definitely DL that game and play it. And since there seems to be a lot interest in Sherlock Holmes, I guess I will try that as well.

PS3Freak2979d ago

I'm playing it right now, it's actually a very fun game. Very rewarding when you figure out how to kill an enemy for the first time.

Amazing month. I'm actually looking forward to playing all those games. Nice one MS. Keep this up.

darthv722986d ago

Never played a borderlands game before so this is a good way to start.

christocolus2986d ago

Agreed. The handsome collection doesn't include the first borderlands game but thanks to GWG Xbox fans who bought the handsome collection now have the complete borderlands collection.

DDMNeo2985d ago (Edited 2985d ago )

First game isn't as great as 2 or the Presequel. Feels like a proof in concept more that a great game, but I mean it's an alright game. Just know if you tired of it that the next game is a much better and more polished experience.

Hoffmann2985d ago (Edited 2985d ago )

Borderlands 1 is shitty in comparison to 2 though.

FlyGuyHung2986d ago

Same. IMO this is the best month for Games With Gold yet. All games I want to try but never actually cared enough to put money on.

On a side note I literally started Boarderlands 2 and im about 45mins into it. Looks like I'll just have to wait it out and play the first one free then continue on.

Been contemplating getting LOTF for a while now and now I can without paying for it. Sweet.

DragonDDark2986d ago

Yup. XB1 GWG are like PS+ now if anyone didn't know.

keenBlade2985d ago (Edited 2985d ago )

Paid for Gold Subsciption but I didn't know that I was going to get a Game I I've almost ordered from Amazon the other day 😊

Saved me the 20 Bucks for Sherlock Holmes and last year the same happened with Rayman Legends.

Sweet Karma 😉

Dark_Crow2985d ago

Sorry no.
Each person pays 60 or whatever the subscription is.

Xbox one players are getting 4 games each month. By the end of the year the value goes over 60$

neoandrew2985d ago

If you don pay for gold you will not have any game.

UnHoly_One2985d ago

Yes we are paying for these in the form of a subscription to LIVE.

Yes, if we quit subscribing to LIVE, we won't have access to any of these games in the future.

Now... Guess how many Xbox fans that are excited about these games will EVER quit subscribing to LIVE?

I've been a LIVE Gold member nonstop since before "Free" games was a thing... Before "Gold" and "Silver" was a thing. Since the first day it launched, when some of you guys posting here were probably in diapers, or maybe just a twinkle in daddies eye.

Over 13 years and I've never been without XBL for a single day. I don't ever plan to be, either. :)

I don't care about any "free" games, i don't want them, don't want anybody to choose for me and force me to pay form something that is free on pc.

I get the games i want on pc and they all have free MP, like rocket league, COMPLETELY FREE
