Ascendant: The Fall of Tomb Raider and the Rise of Lara Croft

In 1996, Core Design's Tomb Raider revolutionized 3D gaming. Six years later, the franchise and its heroine had fallen from grace. Developers from Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal look back on their blockbuster origin trilogy, and discuss how Lara Croft came back from darkness to take her place in the spotlight as one of gaming's most powerful and resourceful icons.

Honestly there are good things about the previous games and good things about the current. I'd prefer a mix of open world and linear to drive a better story in the current games. I'd also use more locations, cities even. Also can we finally get her original outfit its a dlc?...

VenomUK1947d ago

I followed the link to Shack News and I like the look of the article as it seems an in-depth piece on the history of Lara Croft. I will try and read it tomorrow on the train.

pretty in depth, the pacing of the read is awesome

Lara Croft isn’t the first lady of gaming

whitesoxfalife761947d ago (Edited 1947d ago )

your right princess toad is...
wait its ms Pacman thought about that soon I hit the save 👀🤣🤣

PhoenixUp1947d ago

Princess Peach wasn’t even the protagonist of the game she debuted in, howd she even come to mind?

annoyedgamer1947d ago

I want the old Lara Croft Back. Why can't she keep her iconic costume with slightly more average bust size? Oh never mind, I know the reason.

gamer78041947d ago (Edited 1947d ago )

they have a million different costume options in the latest game, and even low poly old models, but for some reason they refuse to give her the iconic costume even now that she has become the tomb raider... would have been cool to see her gear up for the end against trinity and the final boss in her classic gear then you could use it for new game + or finishing other content.

bigmalky1947d ago

Maybe she'll get a boob job for the next game. It can be explained easily...

nommers1947d ago

Not that I disagree with wanting Lara to get her old costume back, but she never had an average bust size. Even the origin games have her as noticeably above average.

Rise of Tomb raider and the fall of Lara Croft.

Tomb Raider doesn't always get the credit that it deserves. It gets overshadowed by Lara's boobs, but In 96 there was no other game like it. The closest thing was Mario 64, but that was a cartoony 3D platformer. Where TR was a 3D action game with violence and puzzle solving. It helped paved the way for games like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, God of War, Uncharted and so many games we play today.

isarai1946d ago (Edited 1946d ago )

That's what always gets on my nerves when arguing why i like the older games more than the reboot trilogy. Everyone just focuses on the boobs, but honestly for me that was never even a selling point. I just REALLY liked the puzzles and focus on precise platforming and problem solving, not to mention the really good sense of adventure where one game takes you to several completely different countries and settings. Not saying it HAS to be linear (i in fact like the structure of the new games) but they seriously lack variety. Never forget how long i spent in the Venice level just exploring the opening river/urban area. And i liked the cocky/confident attitude of a very capable character, which i thought this series was going to build up towards but never did.

And c'mon man, WTF with the no dual pistols WHEN YOU TEASED THEM IN THE FIRST F$#@ING GAME OF THE TRILOGY!!! no matter how hard you try, her iconic weapons will never be a climbing axe (which BTW makes zero sense at this point) and a bow

Should have happened a long time ago. People wanting refunds after 50 hours in game.

fsfsxii38m ago

Pc gamers will take this as an excuse to pirate things

KyRo5m ago

I'm not sure why you're getting disgrees. Whilst not all PC gamers are petty, an awful lot of them are lol

Daily reminder that 'TheGamer' is a corporate-generated, anti-gamer, anti-consumer, clickbait web site. They are mostly A.I. generated articles that villainize gamers. They provide nothing positive and actively try to provoke and divide the community through extreme view points and politics. Do not give them any clicks.

Inverno19m ago

Only scumbags? As if people don't play their games on console put in the most amount of hours and return it to GameStop and trade it in for another game. But also how many people are actually do this? And what games have been allowed to be refunded?

DustMan0m ago

You can refund any game you've purchased as long as it hasn't been longer than two weeks, and you've played less than 2 hours. I wish they would change it to 3 hours because some RPG's have so much exposition that you may only get an hour total of complete gameplay. That's my only knock on it. I've refunded plenty of stuff I was just curious to try. I typically stay away from Early Access titles which are the only ones affected by this policy change.

Gaming4Life19814m ago

I definitely know if I want a refund in 2 hours.

Hopefully doesn’t take them a complete gen to release it

TheColbertinator14h ago

Good. Something not boring, not one of those "make your own game" crap and also on Steam would be nice.

I too like to look for things in the wrong places.

"the capital group of PCF Group S.A."

If you're getting funding from a group that needs two different ways of Acronyming itself, things will not go the way you want them to.

banger881d 17h ago

If it was more online-only crap then good riddance.

jjb19811d 3h ago

Outriders was crap. They slapped that game together and threw in a loot system to get players' attention. This game was absolutely jank and the always online nonsense made it stutter like crazy. People Can't Optimize.

thorstein1d 2h ago

I liked Outriders but I could see where the artistic vision was compromised. The way the industry is now, it wouldn't surprise me that upper management would scrap something that didn't pull in money via gaas, mts, or other means.
