Which 10 new IP did Sony launch in 2018?

A large portion of them are smaller titles, more akin to Déraciné, and Firewall: Zero Hour but they did also launched Spiderman, and Detroit.

Like I said, most of them will be smaller IP's that were less heard of, but they did launch several high profile new IP's as well so it's a great balance.

porkChop1952d ago

Yeah I'm all for smaller IP. That's cool, it's nice to have a good mix. I just wasn't sure which IP they were referring to. I couldn't remember 10 off the top of my head, so I figured some flew under my radar.

For physical new PS4 IPs they launched:
Detroit Become Human
Spiderman

For new PSVR IPs, they launched:
Astro Bot Rescue Mission
Bravo Team
Déraciné
Firewall: Zero Hour
And possibly The Inpatient (It's a prequel to Until Dawn, but it's a different type of game. Kind of falls into a middle ground)

I guess I'm really confused by what they're labeling as new IPs by specific companies. Those are all the Sony published games that I can find for the year that are new IPs. I guess Nintendo's 2 are Sushi Striker and Labo? Octopath was published by Nintendo outside of Japan, so I guess I can understand where they wouldn't include that. If they're counting mobile games then Nintendo has at least 3, since you'd have to include Dragalia Lost. Spiderman is a new IP in an existing franchise, which I think is worth including, but then wouldn't Detective Pikachu count as well?

I just don't see a way you can cut it that those numbers make sense.

Christopher1951d ago

New IPs that Sony published or developed is essentially what they're saying for New IP.

Same for New Releases.

With Sony publishing a ton of games via PlayLink or VR, it increases their new IP listing, but their new releases is pumped up with the more notable releases outside of a handful of new IPs like Detroit Become Human.

The 10th Rider1951d ago (Edited 1951d ago )

@Christopher,

If the list I'm looking at is complete, that still doesn't make any sense. If you add in Playlink, then there's also Chimparty, Frantics, and Knowledge is Power: Decades . . . which does bring it up to ten when you include the PSVR titles and the PS4 titles listed in my above comment.

However, that then completely fails to explain the Nintendo IPs they have listed. If Playlink games count, shouldn't Dragalia Lost? What about Detective Pikachu or Pokemon Quest, new IPs in an existing franchise, if Spiderman and the Inpatient are being counted? Same with Dillon's Dead-Heat Breakers? I can definitely understand excluding some of the possible Switch games, but it doesn't make sense to include Playlink games and new IPs within existing franchises and then be so strict with which Switch games count.

I'm totally fine with such a wide definition of new IP, but it seems inconsistent and without any actual insight into how they came to that list it's difficult to see why the numbers vary so widely. There's not even a source for who decided what counts and what doesn't.

Edited:

Just saw gamingunited´s list. Though they were talking about Sony´s new IP. Most of that list are third party.

Christopher1951d ago

Similar with Nintendo and Microsoft. They include published by Sony much like how Nintendo has published games but not developed by them either.

Wow That's one way to stay relevant "76" here's looking at you.

And I didn't realize how much Microsoft hates making new content.

The Wood1952d ago (Edited 1952d ago )

Hate is a bit strong. . Incapable maybe, lazy maybe. . That's why they purchased more studios. Let's see how that goes but I won't be expecting much from the new teams this gen. Their older teams should be filling the voids until the new teams can produce.

Seasons greetings everyone

rainslacker1951d ago

I don't think they hate making new content. They're just risk adverse because they know that established franchises are a lot easier to market. Until recently, they've had limited 1st party studios to create content, so they're going to focus more on the potential sure thing with those studios, while they've had a few attempts to establish new franchises through 2nd party deals. Those 2nd party deals didn't really light up the charts sales wise, so to MS, they keep going with what works.

Hopefully, with the new studios, they'll take more risks, because its those risks which will end up getting them more franchises established. Not every game will be a hit, but there is more chance to make a hit if you actually produce them, while you have no hit if you don't even try.

From a business prospective Xbox makes a ton of money on services Xbox live for example. It’s takes a lot of money to make a game so MS for Xbox to make games isn’t a priority to be conservative on investments. Now Sony makes a lot of doe through PS. So it makes sense they try and support it as much as possible for its own sake. MS has other means on income and Sony well PS is one is it’s last profitable areas.

PS4 - 44%
Xbox One - 31.8%

What are they doing over there? Sounds like they canceled something big. I read a rumor a while back about ff9 remake . Here "Final Fantasy IX has gone through a very challenging development, the game is still in progress but may undergo changes drastic enough that we won't hear about it for a couple of years."
This could be one of the reasons if the rumor is true. That was Silknight i don't know how credible he is but it's something and it would make sense.

-Foxtrot58m ago

I hope IX is still on the cards

Just a straight up remake which they expand a little bit nothing over ambitious

If IX dosent happen then VI and VIII will never be thought of.

shadowT1h ago

Do not miss Final Fantasy 16. Great game!

raWfodog1h ago

I'm waiting for them to release the complete edition bundle, but it's definitely on my list.

PhillyDonJawn29m ago

Wth is going on with the gaming industry?

TiredGamer24m ago

The industry implosion is continuing. Sky high budgets, prolonged development windows, stagnant sales numbers, and falling currency values (inflation) are wreaking havoc on the legacy industry. AAA games will slowly become the rarity.

CS721m ago

Sad. Rebirth was one of my favorite games in a long time. Should have sold more.

Square & Bandai Namco Being Honest About Quality Is A Step In The Right Direction

Saad from eXputer: "After suffering from massive financial hits, Square Enix & Bandai Namco appear to be turning over a new leaf but I'm still unconvinced."

Nerdmaster16h ago(Edited 16h ago)

I was talking about games with some Japanese guys here in Japan, and it seems like around here Bandai Namco has a fame of making low-quality games, with the occasional gem.

About Square Enix, I believe they lack the capacity to improve. They should learn with Capcom (although even Capcom still makes some bad mistakes), but I don't think they ever will. They keep chasing whatever is new at the time (blockchain, AI...) to say "we innovate", without considering the public perception and if these things actually improve the games or not. Them releasing too many small games with no advertising also shows a lack of trust in its own products. Even with their biggest games, like turning FF into an action game with XVI and the very divisive plot changes regarding whispers and timelines in VII Remake, shows them trying to attract a new generation of gamers without understanding what made the series so big in the first place.

shinoff218315h ago

I want a true ff7 remake. With thatcsaid I'm way happier with 7 remake then I was with ff16. I'd still prefer turn based but square keep chasing these Lil kids

Snookies1212h ago

Man, it is perfectly fine to prefer turn based. Turn based is amazing. But there's zero reason to call anyone who likes action games "lil kids". Liking one gameplay system over another does not make you more mature in any way.

VersusDMC15h ago

People love the new FF's overall...the problem is the abundance of 7's they release that lose money or make very little like diofield, star ocean divine force, Valkyrie asylum, harvestella, foam stars, etc. Advertising wouldn't have saved those games. Apparently Forespoken had a big Advertising budget but we saw how that went.

shinoff218314h ago(Edited 14h ago)

Star ocean divine force actually sold well from what I've read not ff type numbers but well enough. Was a dope game to.

FinalFantasyFanatic13h ago

Bandai Namco is going to Bandai Namco, I do believe that Square Enix can't change without changing the entire management, they've had these issues for more than a decade and haven't learnt, I have very little faith they can course correct. I'll still buy their better remasters/remakes like Star Ocean 2 though (not FF7R).

Asterphoenix11h ago

Namco is just milking the same Sword Art Online with lack of budget as well as anime IPs that don't go to decent developers like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia. Namco deserves their losses and no future Dot Hack or Xenosaga remaster :(.

Square allocated lot of their budget on Forspoken was a mistake. Square always had management issues. Star Ocean 2 was a great remake and I found their recent entries of FF(16 and Rebirth) better than 13 and 15.
I think they were better than 360/PS3 generation where Square went really downhill.

CrimsonWing6914h ago

I don’t know why NOW they decide on this, but I guess later is better than never.
