The PC Gamer staff, and a few readers, share their hype stories about the games that had them the most excited over the years.
No Man's Sky... ...and then came the let down.
And soon comes to RoI!!
Kingdom Hearts III but that is literally hype built over a decade. Thats kinda like organic hype, because there are only two possibilities: one, you lose hope in ever getting to play it or you're hype just builds and builds until its out of this world.
I didn't open my ps4 for 3 years because my wife said "open it when you pass the driving test (theory + practical)" I passed it just after GOW release and before my theory expired so that I can open the ps4 and play GOW :D
How on earth were you able to wait? Especially if you had possession of it. You are a strong willed person.
So far God of War. I stopped driving long distances for the fear of dying in an accident before it came, and the game lived up to the hype.
Hahaha! Bloody brilliant! I'm glad there's someone who thinks like me here. Although for me that kind of thinking was reserved for Avengers Infinity War. Spider-Man PS4 is the most hyped I've ever been for a game in a long time. Last time I bought a console out of sheer hype was Uncharted 2 and mind you it was already out when I did that.
Looool this made me spit my drink out laughter
Shenmue 3. I have never been more excited for a game as much as this one. This is a game i have been waiting for since i completed Shenmue 2, something i thought was never going to happen.
This probably tops the list. The wait for this has been longer than Kingdom Hearts 3.
same for me
Was God of war. Now Ghost of Tushima. Sucker punch haven't released a game in a long time, making me think they have poured love time and effort into this one, plus I have a penchant for Japanese Samurai way of life and its one of my top interests... As I'm sure it it for many people too. They are mo-capping REAL HORSES for god sake! Peace
Oddworld Munch's Oddysee I absolutely love the PS1 titles but the Xbox games just didn't have the same feeling as the original. I hyped up for Soulstorm but after New-n-Tasty, I have tempered expectations.
The most hyped for me was Mario Kart 8 and it surpassed all expectations. I have now bought the game twice and still play it (as in I will literally play it today and still excited to play it). The most hours I have ever pumped into a video game in my history of playing so far. Back in the day as a kid it was Super Mario Bros. 3. I couldn't even believe it was real until it was in my hands..lol. The Wizard movie also had me hyped for it.
I wasn't that hyped for Mario Kart 8, but I have to say that when they announced it my expectations weren't that high. I was thinking it would be a small improvement over Mario Kart Wii, akin to New Super Mario Bros Wii to New Super Mario Bros U . . . Boy was I wrong. That first trailer was such a massive improvement over Mario Kart Wii. As I said, I wasn't super hyped, but I can totally see where someone would be.
God of war 4. It became my favourite game of all time beating legend of dragoon
Ha ha legend of dragoon was an f...ing masterpiece!
most hyped i've ever been has to be for the upcoming RDR2. it's been 8 years since the excellent RDR and the wait is killing me. this hype would instantly be 2nd if demon souls 2 was ever announced.
Horizon Zero Dawn.
I cant see anything ever matching the hype for Halo 3.
Don't know why people are disliking your most hyped game. (Though we obviously know why as it's an xbox exclusive and we're on N4G)
Most hyped I ever was for a game by far. Halo 3 is legendary.
MGS4. Took the entire week off. June 10th was my Anniversary, the 12th the game came out, then the 14th was my birthday. Then Father's day after that. I was super excited for it to come out.
Probably Persona 5 as far as recent games go
At least it was worthy. . .the next persona instalment will have the weight of the world worth of hype on its shoulders I was kinda let down by metal gear God of war had me gassed. .. . .the next will have a lot to live up to also Yo. . . What about crackdown's hype. . . .kinda synthetic as the premise of tech not available elsewhere elevated it above the games natural expectation levels. Unfair but it's not the gamers fault
Last gen it was DS2 and Bioshock 2. This gen it’s probably CP2077. No...it is 2077!!! Though I lust say that I am excited to see how Rockstar has evolved the open world genre. And my two niche games are Valkyrie Chronicles and DQXI. It looks like the absolute best example of a next gen traditional rpg. Unreal!!!
Barbarian II Haha It was nt as good as the first one. Wasn't even good at all
Wow, that era would have been The Last Ninja 3 for me. The first Barbarian needs a remaster. Just the graphics though, gameplay was perfect. They should also keep the head kicking goblin.
And the poster And the awesome tune haha
The poster wouldn't fly in this era, unfortunately.
That's tough. There's been so many throughout the years... Okay, I'm going to say Ocarina of Time. Seeing the game - or tech demo rather - at Space World '95 and reading about the game every so often in varies magazines really kept me from ever forgetting about it. Of course it helped more in the fact that I was replaying every Zelda title up into that point on a regular basis, and with A Link to the Past being my favorite at the time, my hype was sealed. In desperation, I made sure my mother got the idea that I wanted this game. I left ads for it around the house where she would see it, kind of like A Christmas Story movie, turning to the proper page and leaving it on her bed so she couldn't help but notice. I participated in different contests to snag a copy too, both from Nintendo and different magazines, because after all, this had to be the greatest game ever made coming and there was a Collector's Edition at stake here! That's bragging rights, man. So, that golden cartage needed to be mine, like how potheads see the Red Light District. Then after winning nothing from the contests, I got it on Christmas morning. And it was amazing! It wasn't the Collector's Edition (which I got later in life), but I was happy nevertheless, especially learning of the bs my mother had to go through just to get that copy. Best hype high I think I've ever had.
SuperMarioWorld, KOTOR, Witcher 3, and now cyberpunk 2077
I guess GTA:San Andreas wins by default for me, since it's the only game I went to the midnight launch for. The God of War franchise has had me hyped enough to buy a PS3 and PS4 for their eventual releases as well as a PSP bundle with Chains of Olympus and I'm most hyped for the next entry in the series now.
Halo 2 by far! Saved up all my pennies as a kid getting every magazine that had a hint of any new picture for it. Travelled to London with mates and queued 3 hours to play 10 mins on Zanzibar at play convention before release. After that, Half life 2, Mass effect, Battlefield 3, No Mans sky, Metal gear solid 3, Gta 4/5, driver 3, burnout 2, God of war 3 (For some reason not as excited for 4 but it was absolutly my favorite!). Right now hyped for new Halo, Cyberpunk and all games I haven't played on switch yet! (saving the pennies). Guys!! Ain't games awesome!
Halo 2 is a GOAT. I'm also super hyped for Halo Infinite and CP2077!
Every NaughtyDog game and more recent God Of War. Now for some reasson I am dying to play Spider Man PS4. There where many other, but those are the ones where Hype was over the ROOF. I even took 2 weeks off for God Of War. So.... Yeah
Crysis for the pc
Killzone 2 , MGS4 and last i would have to say God of War 3 .. Those were some good HYPE days !!!
I can't believe I forgot about Killzone 2! Ever since that trailer in 2005, I would check IGN on a daily basis for any news updates, for the next three years in a row!
Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube. Imported a US copy from Lik-Sang and found a copy of Freeloader in a local Forbidden Zone. Had it about a month before it came out in the UK 100%'d it before it's release date. Even took it into college, set it up in the media room where i showed my mate just how amazing it looked and played. I still have the freeloader disc and so far Resident Evil 4 is the only reason i have it.
There are several I've been super hyped for - spent nights thinking about them, poring over trailers and previews up until release - but I think the number one game I was excited for has to be the original LittleBigPlanet. Absolutely loved that game even though LBP2 eventually obliterated it in terms of content and quality. The opening cutscene with Stephen Fry's voice, the intro level where you take control of sack boy for the first time, playing through crazy levels online, getting 100% completion on the campaign, making a level of my own over the course of 2 weeks and getting over 30,000 plays (by spamming a particular technique that would bump your level near the top of the 'cool levels' page, something that was patched out early on... ;) It may not be my favourite game ever but my hype was definitely justified. It was everything I had hoped for. And now Dreams looks to completely blow the entire LBP franchise out of the water and I'm hyped all over again. XD
Diablo 3, and now it sucks.
GTA San Andreas
God of War 3. I remember it was sold out for awhile. Later I find out my sister's ex boyfriend who I was pretty cool with at the time had God of War 3 on release date so I asked him to stop by the crib to let me play the game. Sister comes by in the crib all mad noticing her ex boyfriend was there and then decided she doesn't want to talk to me for a week because of that incident. Worth it. Because I got to play God of War 3 and I knew she'd get over it eventually because I'm her brother. That's how determined I was to play that game. Such an amazing game. #Savage
Skyrim and diablo 3
It happens with every major GTA release. I remember reading previews for San Andreas before I even had a PS2, and my mind ran wild imagining everything I could do in the game. I remember Rockstar releasing an interactive map of San Andreas on their site and waiting an hour for it to load on dial-up. I was just as excited for GTA IV and V. The way Rockstar slowly trickles out information over many months/years builds the hype to a fever pitch. Just a single screenshot release was a huge deal for GTA V. On GTAForums, people would analyze the screens to insane levels of detail, plotting everything out on a map which turned out to be incredibly close to the actual game map at release. I can’t wait until the GTA VI hype machine starts up. Hopefully by 2020?
I was hugely hyped up for Doom 3 and was only slightly let down by it when I actually got to play it. It wasn't bad, just different from Doom 1 and 2. I was hyped up and hugely disappointed by Duke Nukem Forever. I was hyped up and disappointed by No Man's Sky. I'm trying to think of a game I was hyped up for and not let down by. I remember pre-ordering Tales of Xilia and really enjoying that - one of my favourite JRPG's ever - but I can't remember being hyped up for it months or years ahead of time like these others.
Sega Afterburner. Have to go back to my arcade days in the 1980's. Also many games from the PS1 era I had major hype for, but not any one game in particular.
Metal gear solid 2 & 3. I remember buying magazines just to read previews about them. Always got me excited knowing a little bit more every article.
GTA V. Lived up to it too
Like every Persona game since I fell in love with the series with Persona 3. Personas 3 FES, 4, Golden and 5 didn't disappoint, and neither did the Arena games (which aren't as good as the mainline games but I didn't expect them to be and enjoyed them in their own right). Currently, my most hyped game is the upcoming Spider-Man. I don't think that hype is misplaced.
* Halo 2 probably....that or Halo 3 because of how good Halo 2 was. * Perfect Dark - because of how good Goldeneye 007 was...the hype for Perfect Dark was really high. * Smash Melee - After playing Smash 64 a ton, the hype for Melee's launch with the Gamecube was extremely high. * Age of Empires 3 - After playing Age of Empires 1&2 + expansions + Mythologies the hype for Age 3 was at an all time high................And then Microsoft disbanded Ensemble Studios after they moved them over to Halo Wars = lame.
Metal Gear Solid 4.
Probably Halo 3 back in 2007 when I was a huge Halo fan. I was obviously much younger back then. I'm 37 now and I honestly don't get hyped for anything anymore. I look forward to games (some more than others) but that young, enthusiastic fervor is gone.
FFVIII... Following VII, how much more hyped could anyone be.
Hyped for soul calibur 6 finnaly after 5 years, also kingdom hearts 3.
Zaxxon for the Atari 2600.. Boy it was a let down!
Resident Evil 2. After seeing early shots of Raccoon City and the fact that there'd be more than three zombies on screen I was super pumped, and then when that early version got canned and they restarted (sans fat zombies!) hype levels were through the roof. It didn't fail to deliver either! I'd have to put Metal Gear Solid 2 on the list too. Seeing those graphics in shots in magazines and then after playing the demo fifteen thousand times, wow. MELTING ICE CUBES.
I was pretty hyped for Metal Gear Solid 4. Even bought the Ps3 when it was released. I felt a bit let down by it but overall, worth the wait. I had the same hype for MGSV but was severely disappointed with the "finished" product. Halo 3 was pretty legendary, the marketing for that game was top notch - it definitely had me excited for release night.
For me, one hyped game was Borderlands 2, For Racing- The Crew 2
Breath of the Wild. Star Wars the Force Unleashed was also big for me.
Nothing will ever get me so hyped like MGSV did. Those 3 years of extreme hype was truly special <3.... I used my summer vacation when it released so I could play it nonstop :D.
