Video games truly have come a long way in terms of technological achievements.
Missing Ryse on that list.
Agree it should be in that list it was the best looking game and won siggraph award for best graphics 2014 Digital foundry "Ryse comes close to delivering the kind of experience you'd expect from a pre-rendered CG film"
Yes Ryse was a truly great looking game.
Look at the sony fans with the thumbs down lol
Great list list. i have to add Parasite Eve 2. Was a graphical marvel when it was announced.
This is true, but can't also argue against the games that made the list
was Ryse really ahead of it's time tho? Gorgeous game but with all the experience Crytek has I'd say it wasn't ahead of it's time. Crysis was ahead of it's time by a mile.
Id argue with the l limited interactivity, there was a reason the graphics were so good. I mean even look at Quantic Dreams games, the graphics look great because they can shunt the power from what would normally be used for physics and collision detection. Ryse had no collision detection and 0 environment interactivity. I love those games, but just like a racer, there are reasons why certain games look so great. I would say killzone 2 and Driveclub defied even that logic though. So this list makes sense.
Ryse wasn't ahead of its time, any big developer could make a game that looked like that if the gameplay was basically a kinect game minus kinect.
Yea ryse was amazing graphically. Quick downvote this since it has something to do with Microsoft. Smh
Ryse wasn't developed by Microsoft, nor do you need an Xbox to play it..... So your comment actually has nothing to do with Microsoft outside of typing the word. LOL!
Developed by Crytek. It's on PC it's on Xbox. That's Microsoft, that's Xbox. Duh
N4GSONY.com not allowing people to say anything positive Xbox related, pathetic.
1 : Uncharted 2 2 : God of War (2005) 3 : Donkey Kong Country 4 : Killzone 2 5 : STAR WARS ROGUE SQUADRON II: ROGUE LEADER 6 : Soul Calibur 7 : Sega Super GT 8 : MGS2 9 : The Order 1886 10 : Shenmue 11 : MGS4 12 : The Witcher 3 13 : Black (First Xbox) 14 : Driveclub 15 : Crysis It's one of those one game per page articles. You're welcome.
Thanks so much. I clicked off the first page of the article to go back here to look for the real MVP.
Just block gamingbolt and that'll fix so many problems.
Good looking out
Thanks! I would add Rage to the list and Motorstorm.
Rage was an unholy mess ffs, low res textures, motorstorm hell yeah
Thanks. Hate those clickbait websites. Anyway, Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis/Megadrive) should be on the list. I remember when it came out and it just blew everything and everyone away. Still does, TBH.
"Blast Processing" FTW!
Yi-Long Yeah, it seems that the author is too young to acknowledge a number of the older gen games. A few games that come to mind for me are Strider (Genesis/Mega Drive), the first 8MB cartridge, and SF2 (SNES), the first 16MB cartridge.
Watch out, people get warnings for this. Regardless, 100% thank you. I hate clicking only to realize it's multipage.
That's a pretty good list, thanks for taking one for the team and saving us the clicks! Honestly, there are many others too (some of which have been mentioned here already) but a few that I'd add are Gran Turismo 2, Gears of War, and Turok 2. They were all ground-breaking for their time too.
No Street Fighter 2?!
The first Killer Instinct that had awesome graphics back then
ouch, the list focuses a bit too much on games in the last few years if you ask me.
Far Cry 2 was alright too.
Your list belies your biases.
Derp derp derpiddy
Not all heroes wear capes!
Glad to see uncharted 2 at the top. I will always remember its e3 showing and being absolutely blown away.
I clicked the article. Saw 15 slides. Closed the webpage and returned here to see if someone had recreated the list. You did not disappoint. Thank you
muchas gracias señor 👌🏻
Interesting they chose GoW 2005 & not 2018. Both looked great but the newest entry was more impressive graphically for the time period. Some can argue GoW 2018 looks better than anything else theyve ever played. Including on the PC. Not the craziest resolution or frame rate but incredibly detailed graphics. Thanks for the list btw. I hate articles that make you click through more than 5 pages
I'd give you a thousand thumbs up if I could. 1 will have to do along with my thanks :)
The Last of Us deserves a mention as well.
The Last of Us looked really nice, but I'm not sure I'd call it ahead of its time. Driveclub still impressed me today though.
Project gotham racing should be on there. PGR3 looked insane when it came out
All Crysis games Digital foundry "Where Crysis 3 really shines is on the PC, in which we are presented with a huge leap in graphical quality that gives us a tantalising glimpse of visual accomplishment on next-gen hardware" (PS4 - Xbox one) "The fact that Crysis 3 runs on console at all is a remarkable achievement, with Crytek deploying a wide range of advanced rendering techniques which make the game one of the most visually impressive titles released on the current-gen consoles to date." Eurogamer But it is a world whose intricacy and realism will cause you to stop and stare long after the first drop of the jaw. The sway of tree-tops; the spray of a decorative fountain; the flames erupting from a burst gas pipe: incidental details that grab your attention for their quiet, shocking realism. Who knows how Crytek managed to squeeze Cry Engine 3 onto the consoles while maintaining such extraordinary level of detail? But this world sits next to Uncharted 2's as the most detailed and well-expressed yet seen on our TVs. "phenomenally attractive game, producing effects quite different and in many ways more advanced than anything we've seen elsewhere on console. We all wanted Crysis on console to be an event, a showcase release: by and large, Crytek has delivered, and those cutting edge visuals are backed by a truly impressive game design."
Drive Club? you mean that 30 fps ridge racer rip off with the Instagram filter?
Driveclub looks amazing, especially the weather effects, which are pretty much unmatched.
It looked so good they decided to stop supporting the title and never make a sequel
@ FlameWater: the game has had a lot of support. And besides, that has nothing to do with the visuals.
Drive club is still the best looking racing game
That's like calling Kim Kardashian the most beautiful woman because she wears the most make up
At least it doesnt have cardboard cutouts as textures
@Kribwalker yep or forza.
Drive club is a good game and the graphics on it are amazing, shame there no PS4 pro patch
You sound upset.
Good list and many brought back memories. I'd forgotten about Black but it was awesome on OG Xbox! Loved the destructible environments too!
Ryse, Gears of War and Motorstorm should be there.
where the fuck is super metroid
I had to log in just to give you an upvote my friend.
my dudette <3
Frogger for the starpath supercharger on the Atari 2600 was way ahead of its time 😉
GT 3 should be on top of the list
If only Driveclub had a better engine the invisible walls the horrible physics the pre-rendered backgrounds the on rails game engine. The months after months of delays this was the final straw to me for Sony fooled me into buying a PS4 for that crap. Beautiful game awful game play.
It was a track racer not on rails. What game were u playing?
GOW Ascension and LA Noire
Thanatos, sinclair ZX Spectrum
I feel like Mario 64 deserves a spot on this list. Definitely more so than the first God of War, or possibly Black (I know nothing about the game, but the screenshots look unimpressive).
Original Gran Turismo and GTA3.
Gears of war is not even on this list so thats an automatic debunk for me
I know I might be the only one, but Just Cause 3 is one of the technical marvels of this generation. If it runs very well (Which in my case it does), it is easily the most beautiful game this gen. Oh those sweet explosions.
The first Mafia on pc should be on that list imo, or Doom 3 maybe?
I think you meant to put Stuntrace FX on list..............
