Age of Empires IV by Relic Announced; Age of Empires II & III Getting Definitive Edition

Age of Empires IV has been announced to be in development by Relic Entertainment. Age of Empires II and III will also get Definitive Editions.

Age of Empires is my favorite PC game series of all time so I'm really excited for this but also a bit cautious as Ensemble Studios doesn't exist anymore after Microsoft disbanded them after they forced them to make Halo Wars.

I'm hoping this game actually feels like true Age of Empires and not some gimmicky knock-off bush league wannabe game.

Please do this right Microsoft.

This is like a dream come true for RTS fans: Definitive editions of Age of Empires 1, 2 and 3 AND a new game in the series!!!

When I said I'd love a new game in the series, some people commented (*cough*EDMIX*cough*) and said it wouldn't happen or wouldn't be be good because Ensemble was closed down . . . Relic Entertainment is about the BEST out there to handle a fourth game in the series!

Makes perfect sense for Gamescom to, they love games like AoE and Civilization over in Germany. This is literally all I wanted out of Gamescom. I'll have to build a thousand priest units to sing praises to the AoE gods, lol. "Wololo!"

They also announced definitive editions of AoE 1, 2 and 3. I hope Age 4 is set in the past and not a modern setting like WW1 or 2. Anyway, huge news and very happy.

AoE 1 Definitive Edition had already been announced, but they confirmed that it will be out in October.

Honestly, they could set in in the period leading up to WWI or WWII. That was the end of the Age of Empires, really. They all sort of collapsed after that.

Yeah, honestly 1800s/early 1900s could be pretty sweet. There was the American Civil War, the Barbary wars, Spanish American Wars, the Russo-Persian war, Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, the wars for the unification of Germany, the War of 1812, the Zulu wars, the Opium war, etc . . .

The 1800's all the way up to just prior to WW1 would be a fantastic setting.

Although I'd prefer they keep the 4th game a little earlier, I have confidence in Relic to handle WW1 or WW2 since they made Company of Heroes. Although I'd prefer it being set in an ancient or medieval time period, the fact that they're remastering all the old games certainly helps scratch that itch.

None. My guess is that at the earliest we'll see Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition sometime Summer 2018, Age of Empires 3 Definitive Edition in Spring 2019, and the Age of Empires 4 Holiday 2019. Relic does a game about every 2 years and Dawn of War 3 came out this past Spring.

Aoe fans have been waiting so long for a new Age game. Making it work on a controller would, unfortunately, negatively impact the game and it is great news Microsoft is staying true to the series. As much as I'd like to see more people play the game this is the right decision for the pc community and the health of the series. I think Microsoft understands this as these games were born on pc.

I was talking more about the definitive editions. I understand the focus on PC for the new one but I want the remasters. If I got age of mythology on Xbox I would shit bricks.

I was on board with the "play anywhere" stuff when I thought Xbox was going to get stuff like the aoe remasters but apparently it only means Xbox games are going to Windows. That's garbage. They are willingly or unwillingly killing their Xbox brand imo.

To be fair, not sure what good you would get out of it on Xbox. I have an Xbox myself and support Play Anywhere but really the main gate stopping that is extended development time to make the games play well on the console which is hopeful. I can see your argument but Microsoft has been backing Xbox for years and is still strong. What they are really doing is strengthening their pc space and it's been overdue.

It would be good for me personally because I have an Xbox in my room lol. I want to play AoE lounging on the bed, it's not any more complicated than that. I bought city skylines on PC and Xbox. I never thought it would work on a controller but it does. Controller support isn't some ridiculously expensive hurdle. The games are finished, they are being remastered and they can't take a few months for controller support? I think that's bullshit. I think play anywhere is bullshit. If the next Xbox follows this same path I'm not gonna bother personally.

MS owns the franchise and will be producing it. It could still come to xbox one though. Maybe they will wait until e3 to announce it or maybe they are so out of touch with xbox that they do not recognise this as a huge opportunity. If you look in the right corner at the end you will see the Microsoft studios logo.

I was wondering about the logo. If relic are making it why have a microsoft studio logo on screen. Hopefully this means they will work on a port. I am happy with a port coming later as i would prefer relic made it then allowed it to be ported across afterwards. If so there would be nothing to show for xbox yet, so waiting would make sense.
