Xbox One May Not Be Irrelevant- But Currently It Surely Is Receding Away From Gamer Conversation

What a great three months for gaming- it's hard to think of the last time we had a period of time so jam packed with quality new game releases, or so many developments and announcements in the gaming sphere. After the last few years felt like the gaming market was contracting and shrinking, this year has struck back with a relentless stream of great games one after the other so far.

I'm amazed at times by how clueless some can be. PS4 had a drought in games, yes. That's because games were actually being developed. This is contrary to other companies that gave up on their previous console to put more games on a new console, which still was far from worthwhile to many. Where's all the games from Microsoft since they were touting all that money being used for gaming? So yes there was a drought at the beginning of the PS4 lifecycle. It's been a constant stream since.

The problem is that in this internet/fast pace world, more and more people are prisoners of the moment. And right now the moment are PlayStation & Switch.

When Scorpio drops in the latter part of the year, it'll be their moment.

Now if Sony manages to drop GT:Sport & another major exclusive (I'm looking at the slim possibility of Spider-Man or God of War)...then the latter part of the year will be both Xbox & PlayStation's moment

It's honestly not surprising. The Xbox 360 started out with a bang - a ton of exclusives that even included JRPGs like Vesperia and Star Ocean, not to mention FFXIII became multi. Then they slowly just relied on multiplatforms and Kinect. It wasn't a big deal back then because the 360 was the leading platform in NA but now that the PS4 has taken their spot back, it's a lot more visible how they stop supporting exclusives, even canceling Scalebound and Phantom Dust

Exclusives always mattered. No amount of slight of hand or damage control will change that. Reliance on 3rd party games is different from 3rd party game superiority. All sides flip flop but exclusives will always be one of the defining factors of the faux war or console competition depending on your viewpoint.

I am a playstation fan but i do admit that the online services are better on the xbox over Playstation, BC feature was a good move... I really think MS is finally trying to buck the trend they have set over the last decade though. There's been too many indicators not to strongly consider the possibility.

You have to wonder who looks at their company in the first place and says, "Let's cut our first party studios. That will get us more customers!" Like less choice is ever better than more if all other things are equal.

I've said it before. My taste in gaming means that MS has more choices for me, but I'm not naïve. If MS was/is serious about boosting their image at some point, more choice can only better for their position within the industry.

They're definitely pushing things back to the end of the year to support the Scorpio launch. To answer Captain_Tom, of course Xbox will have exclusives.. and to think otherwise is idiotic. For at least the time being there will be no Scorpio-exclusive titles though.. part of their strategy is the play everywhere, forward-compatible, every game works on every xbox mindset. Crackdown 3 will likely be 'better on Scorpio' since it's taken them so long to get it running on the base Xbox One.

To allow developers to truly utilize the Scorpio's power it will need to abandon the original Xbox One and the S.. much like games needed to abandon the 360 and PS3 so they wouldn't be held back. For the next 1-2 years I'd expect Scorpio to be a 4K upgrade to games much like the PS4 pro, after that they should start allowing exclusives.

There are none, which is the problem. All big XB1 exclusives have either been cancelled, or disappointing when released. And even without cancellations there have just been too few. Quantum Break wasn't bad, and Gears 4 is ok. Forza Horizon 3 was also better than expected. But those are the highlights, and none come close to must-have exclusives like Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, HZD, etc. etc. etc. I have both the PS4 and XB1 consoles and it's tough to find a reason to even turn my XB1 on. In fact, it's gotten so bad that I primarily use my XB1 for streaming Netflix or other shows just to get some use out of it and save some wear and tear on my PS4.

Just like Sony had it's slow period between 2013-2015 Xbox is clearly going through the same phase.

However It's been said time and again that alot of internal shuffling went around after Mattrick was given the boot and Spencer took over.

Spencer himself has also commented on players concerns over the lack of 1st party titles and that he's reworking the first party scene.

The Switch has Zelda. Any other exclusive out on the Switch isn't even worth talking about. Wait for Mario Odyssey. XB1 still has more exclusives. @Eddie I disagree. I am super interested in the Scorpio but I will admit it's not entirely for the upcoming games. The Xbox (or rather Windows 10) platform is doing great things for gamers. It's essentially turning Xbox into PC for consoles. I imagine that if you own an Xbox one, you'll still be able to play games that come out on Scorpio at lower settings like PC. And any consoles that come after Scorpio will just be higher powered versions of the same platform. Couple that with the backwards compatibility they are giving us with Xbox live arcade and 360 and boom you have a platform that will always be backwards compatible and always get the newest greatest games.

I will admit though, they really need to start stepping it up in the actual games department. They have the platform, online infrastructure and even streaming service ready to go but without the games it won't mean shit. Sony has been killing them with all the awesome games coming out but Microsoft has the edge when it comes to their platform.

You're talking 4x more necessary processing power to push that vs. 4K (which itself is only starting to become common). My prediction is that MS is going to show games that are expected to release WAAAY into the future. The accurate narrative of xbox "has no games" has been a strong talking point in the past, but after the cancellation of scalebound that's all you ever hear now when discussing the xbone, and rightly so. MS are well aware of this and will do anything the can at E3, whether it be slight manipulations of truth to bold face lies, to counter that narrative.

They will do a spectacular smoke and mirrors display. All flash, zero substance. The gullible sheep will eat it up, and we'll get a barrage articles saying how ms is back in the game and they're still firmly supporting their console, blah blah blah.

Meanwhile, it's years before those games release, some of them might get cancelled, and if they do finally release some of them might just be ok instead of must haves.

And this is just the history of MS, ever since they entered the console space. I don't know why anyone supports this company.

The first Xbox definitely moved the industry forward. It was powerful, allowing it to run games the competition couldn't, it had internal storage and decent media capabilities for the time, and Xbox Live changed online gaming forever. The 360, although initially plagued with hardware problems, was cheaper and easier to develop for than the PS3. I like my Xbox One, but I feel like the entire concept of it was a huge misstep opposed to what had been offered in previous generations.

and before anyone disagrees with me, hear me out. when describing dark souls to any new player, some form or another the words, really difficult/challenging game pops up, and instinctively the new players choose to play the game in a more defensive/passive state, blocking hits, spinning around the enemy in question dozens of times in some cases until that opening appears.

In bloodborne the took the one piece of comfort zone away from us, no more sheilds to block attack, and instead we had to become what we were meant to become. Hunters. hunter do not wait for openings, they make their own openings. Hunters do not fight passively, but extremely aggressively to the point the Regain system was implemented.

Bloodborne introduced hundreds if not thousands of players to the soulsborne games, and Bloodborne retaught everyone how to play soulsborne games.

Bloodborne and nioh are definitely more groundbreaking than halo 9 or forza 18 or gears 7. Let's say Sony announced resistance 5 following less than great reception for the preceeding installments, but high sales do to certain gamers buying and playing any FPS. Would we not all be saying "geez Sony, why don't you make something new?" if Sony were closing their studios left and right and cancelling very much anticipated high profile games, would it not beg the question "when are they going to move on from the same old stuff?". Is it wrong to want a company to grow and change and give it's customers variety? I think if Sony was guilty of these things you would be the first on the soapbox proclaiming "Sony is stale." I find it hard to believe that you've played any of these games (Bloodborne, Nioh, and Horizon) with an unbiased and open view, or maybe at all. I could be wrong, though, I am basing that assumption on the fact that you actually compared new ips with the same rehash of the same tired ms franchises we've seen since the original Xbox. Those ips were great. But, with the exception of forza, who's quality has remained unchanged, gears and halo have consistently declined. Couple that with new ip cancelations and studio closures and your fan base is left asking "why am I still playing the upteenth version of this shooter/racing game I've been playing since 2 generations ago?". MS has a lot of room for improvement in that area. And if Sony was as guilty of this as MS, you and every other MS supporter would be decrying them for it. But it does seem that for you and your ilk, MS is immune to such criticism. I love games, regardless of platform. That being said Sony definitely produces more experiences that I am interested in. By quite a large margin. I guess for me it just feels like Sony and Nintendo really have their collective hearts in the gaming industry. Whereas it doesn't seem the same for Microsoft. As for your clones comment, Bloodborne is much easier to play than the souls games with varied mechanics. Nioh, even more so. And claiming horizon is a clone of AC, uncharted, or tomb raider is very telling in that none of the games you compare it to have the same story, mechanics, or game play. It makes me think you never even played it, but instead maybe read reviews and watched some game play videos. Unless you use the very general definition of the word clone. But by that logic, every FPS is a clone of the original doom, every platform er is a clone of Mario, every TPS is a clone of the original metal gear, every side scroller is a clone of mega man, and every dungeon crawler is a clone of the original Zelda. All of which are just derived from callecovision, commodore, Amiga, and Atari games. Stop being so concerned with how your precious Microsoft is perceived by the gaming community, and just enjoy what you enjoy, without trying to downplay experiences provided by another company. I'm not in every article downplaying Sony, I did with PSnow playing PS4 games on pc, but that was strictly in response to the Xbox=no exclusives crap that's been going since play anywhere was announced. If you don't see a difference in psnow and all ms exclusives being released on pc, I don't have the time to explain it in detail. But here's the short version. Psnow allows one to pay a fee to be able to stream games to their pc or smart TV. Microsoft us releasing physical copy of their exclusives directly to the pc either digitally or physically. In short if you only have a pc, you can play console games on it legally either by going out and buying a physical copy of the game in Microsoft's case, or by paying a rental fee to stream games in sony's case. Psnow however also includes past gen games. The difference is clear.

Here's the thing, it's not the "lack of games" that's making it fade from conversation, it's the lack of any truly great games. If you're going on 4 years of a console's life, and the ONLY absolute "must buy" game that is available only on your console* is a racing game (*that is also available on PC) , then you shouldn't be surprised when people stop talking about your console. Xbox's flagship franchises have been regressing, Halo, Gears, and FMS have all had some of their lowest rated games on Xbox One. That's not to say that these games are bad (they're not), but in a competitive market, consumers expect things to get better, not worse.

So exactly what video games on this unreleased xbox one point five are you excited about exactly the only thing noteworthy that isn't multiplatform is crackdown and it keeps getting pushed back on release date.

It might be different if it was a whole new generation being released with new games but it isn't, it is a overclocked xb1, I guess it is nice for the people that want to upgrade the graphics a little versus the base model getting long in the tooth but beyond that not a lot of reason get a new system.

If ms had the same number of first party studios as sony does pumping out titles that would actually be great for gamers, but they gutted most of their first party devs back in about year 3 or 4 of the 360's lifecycle in favor of pushing natal. Yeah so ps4 gamers will sell all their games and the console to play cod or battlefield and rebuying all their old games back on scorpio, in case they ever get the itch to replay a game from the beginning.

If that is the logic to use just move to pc since it will always beat any console released, when you have to pull the superior multiplatform card, you know your console's exclusives are not cutting it.

Maybe you will get lucky and ms will actually put a release date on crackdown, considering what happened to scalebound I would not hold my breath.

just from my personal experience, it seems MOST who buy xbox simply buy it just to keep up with times, almost like they don't actually have a reason for buying it.

but most that I know that bought a playstation buy it for the games...

Let's be honest. Xbox has been lame ever since the launch of kinect on the 360. Before that, microsoft were completely different. The og xbox was great console with awesome games and the 360 was a beast for its first 4 years. It had games galore and tons of exclusives.. than microsoft all of a sudden stopped caring about games and focused on kinect and call of duty while sony clawed their way back to their throne from the bad ps3 launch and than went into ps2 era sony mode with the ps4 while microsoft decided to tell us we needed to watch tv on our games consoles and have it connected at all times whilst throwing in a big stupid camera that no one wanted or asked for.

IMO Xbox is the best platform and I really enjoy gaming on it. The future prospect with play anywhere, Xbox games pass and unified Win10 environment is the right direction and future proofing the Xbox platform.
More 1st party studios would be nice and I expect some reveals at E3, but overall I am really satisfied with Xbox since I am huge fan of its exclusives (i.E.: Halo, Forza, Quantum Break, Ryse, Recore, Titanfall 1, Sunset Overdrive, Max: Curse of the Brotherhood...).
Sony has a great platform aswell but I don't care about it and it has no appeal to me.

And you can hate the ps4 all you want, but you can't deny the fact that it has far more exclusives and variety

I am not hating PS4! I repeat I AM NOT HATING PS4! I actually said that it is a great platform aswell!
I simply do not care for it since it has no appeal to me. That is personal preference which happens if you are offered a choice ;)
Having the opportunity to buy some of the games on Steam does not change the fact that I prefer to own them on the Win10 platform where I can play it on Xbox or PC (not true for the older titles but that is what play anywhere is for).

This year they dont have one (sorry but state of decay, sea of thieves or Crackdown arent), except if they buy some IP from another studio or if they get somekind of huge exclusive stuff from Red Dead 2

Without studios pumping amazing games its not possible to be number one and get more marketshare.

The PR from Microsoft will counter with 4k talk with the Scorpio like Forza 4k, but its more of the same and wont work on the average gamer.

Xbox had a nice close to 2016 but as usual a slow start to the year. Halo Wars 2 and what else for first or second party stuff? I honestly don't even know what big games have release dates for 2017...it's truly stunning just how bare-bones Xbox is at the moment and rest of the year. Sea of Thieves, Crackdown, I am sure Forza 7 is coming and what else? If that's all they have--and even then I am skeptical since none of those games have release dates--then Phil Spencer and the gang need to take a different approach because the current one isn't cutting it.

I have to say that having MS around is a good thing. Competition is GOOD. We get better service, and products. That said MS seems like they are treading water. They have a diminishing first party presence, and the third party titles run better on the competitive offering. This is the one two punch. I hear every Xbox fan continually saying to wait for Scorpio, it will be better when Scorpio releases, Scorpio Scorpio etc. Unfortunately there are entirely too many unknowns for this Scorpio release. Final hardware, PRICE (they keep saying it will be a PREMIUM offering), and lastly the production numbers.

The reality is, I think this is the MS swan song. Scorpio represents more of an ending than a new beginning. It will be a limited production, high dollar offering that will NOT change the game. I honestly feel it will be a goodbye from MS to the console business.

Could be wrong, but the deafening silence from them is troubling. The old Forza, Halo, Gears formula is stale and is not working. First party offerings are dwindling (is Rare going to save with Sea of Thieves???). They will continue to ride this generation out, but due to the cost of development I don't see an Xbox 2 (or whatever the hell they would call it) on the horizon.

Don't count out the deep pockets. Look for Destiny 2 and Bungie at E3, maybe CoD too, with the Scorpio.

Need a killer app like Mass Effect last gen. But a great start would include day one patches for everything.

I am curious about the launch though. Shadow of War is a Scorpio title, at least it's advertised as such. Did MS pay for this right b/C it launches in August. Is Scorpio launching in the summer? Otherwise, ppl will have already bought it on Pro and X1 months b4 it's release!

I don't see how Scorpio will help MS, it's not just the hardware - they have no games.
Games can sell even if they're not running on 1080p60 - but MS fail to get a proper Devs to make good games for them.
Also, All 1st party games are PC too, so what's the point of having a console? XB1 or Scorpio?

The PS3 had better HW from X360 and it didn't help the console to fail at first, so all MS fans that thinks that only the Scorpio will help MS, think again

After the success of the 360, I never thought I'd see another generation where Sony can dominate the US market. Now I'm at the point where I honestly can't judge the direction of Microsoft's vision for their gaming aspirations. What are they trying to achieve? It was obvious in the 7th generation but they seem to be pretty quiet this time around - for many reasons, I'm sure.

Until I see a day where Microsoft has games on the level of The Last Of Us or Horizon Zero Dawn and are original IP's microsoft could release a doc brown DeLorean it won't make a difference ...if it comes with generic shooters and space men..... gamers will not take interest. Gamers are a different breed now...they want amazing stories and amazing experiences...the days of halo and gears are over...people want experiences that stay with them and are on part with film.
