Xbox One May Not Be Irrelevant- But Currently It Surely Is Receding Away From Gamer Conversation

What a great three months for gaming- it's hard to think of the last time we had a period of time so jam packed with quality new game releases, or so many developments and announcements in the gaming sphere. After the last few years felt like the gaming market was contracting and shrinking, this year has struck back with a relentless stream of great games one after the other so far.

Well where are the games? Which games coming this year even have release dates?

Its ridiculous especially compared to the madness PlayStation has delivered already and we are only 3 months into the year!

I'm amazed at times by how clueless some can be. PS4 had a drought in games, yes. That's because games were actually being developed. This is contrary to other companies that gave up on their previous console to put more games on a new console, which still was far from worthwhile to many. Where's all the games from Microsoft since they were touting all that money being used for gaming? So yes there was a drought at the beginning of the PS4 lifecycle. It's been a constant stream since.

@ DAEMONIFEAR:

Please do some research next time:

2013:
God of War Ascension

2014:

Infamous Second Son
Little Big Planet 3
Mlb The Show 14

2015:

The Order 1886
Bloodborne
Mlb The Show 15
Until Dawn

2016:

No Man's Sky

All of these released outside of the last quarter

The problem is that in this internet/fast pace world, more and more people are prisoners of the moment. And right now the moment are PlayStation & Switch.

When Scorpio drops in the latter part of the year, it'll be their moment.

Now if Sony manages to drop GT:Sport & another major exclusive (I'm looking at the slim possibility of Spider-Man or God of War)...then the latter part of the year will be both Xbox & PlayStation's moment

darthv723021d ago

I always seem to find something to play during those months without new releases.

blitz06233021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

It's honestly not surprising. The Xbox 360 started out with a bang - a ton of exclusives that even included JRPGs like Vesperia and Star Ocean, not to mention FFXIII became multi. Then they slowly just relied on multiplatforms and Kinect. It wasn't a big deal back then because the 360 was the leading platform in NA but now that the PS4 has taken their spot back, it's a lot more visible how they stop supporting exclusives, even canceling Scalebound and Phantom Dust

@fleece

Exclusives always mattered. No amount of slight of hand or damage control will change that. Reliance on 3rd party games is different from 3rd party game superiority. All sides flip flop but exclusives will always be one of the defining factors of the faux war or console competition depending on your viewpoint.

DAEMONIFEAR3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

You added in ps3 titles lol and for games I cared about between then that are AAA there were 4 games lol I also didn't mention 2016 again very few worth mentioning but again 2 titles so all up that's 6 AAA games between 2014-2016 going by your list!

Also I don't assume I actually do my research and I'm talking AAA not games no one cares about! Indies, A and AA aren't included!

Boy! you can defend when somethings not right.. People like you are the reason why everyone is questioning the Xbox Brand today.. I am a playstation fan but i do admit that the online services are better on the xbox over Playstation, BC feature was a good move... I dont hate the Xbox or else i wouldnt have spent on it (535 usd) yes! that's the price i paid for the Xbox one w/o here in India . Its an amazing system but the people behind it are busy with this features and that features including customization on gamertag pics i hear.. Thats fine with me but I didnt and like me many didnt buy the system for features ONLY but for games. I personally got the Xbox one for GOW (My best from xbox ) and yes! QB ( great concept but boring) .
So Stop defending and question Xbox where are the games... why only HALO , FORZA and Gears...
Well lets see during E3 , The pricing for Scorpio will depend on my purchase and i hear Phil has something "SPECIAL" to show.. He says that every year but lets see If he lives up to it this time.. Something good and new (NOT CD3) to showcase on Scorpio will be great..

frostypants3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

Captain_Tom3021d ago

Will there even be "Launch Exclusives" for Scorpio?

I think MS has made it clear XBOX will no longer have exclusives.

SideNote3021d ago

Yes, I used to be one of them, but not this time. I have a ps4 now and never been happier with the games.

TheCommentator3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

Wait, is this opposites day? To quote ChrisX above, "(S2Killinit) can't believe I'm agreeing with you."

I really think MS is finally trying to buck the trend they have set over the last decade though. There's been too many indicators not to strongly consider the possibility.

You have to wonder who looks at their company in the first place and says, "Let's cut our first party studios. That will get us more customers!" Like less choice is ever better than more if all other things are equal.

I've said it before. My taste in gaming means that MS has more choices for me, but I'm not naïve. If MS was/is serious about boosting their image at some point, more choice can only better for their position within the industry.

DivoJones3021d ago

They're definitely pushing things back to the end of the year to support the Scorpio launch. To answer Captain_Tom, of course Xbox will have exclusives.. and to think otherwise is idiotic. For at least the time being there will be no Scorpio-exclusive titles though.. part of their strategy is the play everywhere, forward-compatible, every game works on every xbox mindset. Crackdown 3 will likely be 'better on Scorpio' since it's taken them so long to get it running on the base Xbox One.

To allow developers to truly utilize the Scorpio's power it will need to abandon the original Xbox One and the S.. much like games needed to abandon the 360 and PS3 so they wouldn't be held back. For the next 1-2 years I'd expect Scorpio to be a 4K upgrade to games much like the PS4 pro, after that they should start allowing exclusives.

XanderZane3021d ago

@Captain_Tom
Hhhmm.. that's not what Phil has said.

It is something to think about considering Crackdown, State of Decay and Sea are supposedly releasing this year. All signs look like MS will be releasing games close to Scorpio's launch.

DragonDDark3021d ago

gangsta_red3021d ago

Unfortunately it looks like MS won't confirm anything until E3. Unless they seriously surprise us beforehand.

Kratos0Ace3021d ago

That is a problem. I still believe based on lack of footage that some of the Xbox exclusives will delay to next year or cancel.

Consider that Fable cancelled after a Beta. If Sea of Thieves doesn't have a succesful Beta it may be next.

Others may delay. Where is the gameplay footage that shows real progress for Crackdown 3?

If you really researched a lit bit. You would see that since 2013 the PS4 has had more AAA, Indie, and Japanese exclusives than the Xbox One. Including plenty of AAA games outside the 4th quarter that had no competition on the other side of the fence because there were none save Quantum Break once. Tumaras3021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

There are none, which is the problem. All big XB1 exclusives have either been cancelled, or disappointing when released. And even without cancellations there have just been too few. Quantum Break wasn't bad, and Gears 4 is ok. Forza Horizon 3 was also better than expected. But those are the highlights, and none come close to must-have exclusives like Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, HZD, etc. etc. etc. I have both the PS4 and XB1 consoles and it's tough to find a reason to even turn my XB1 on. In fact, it's gotten so bad that I primarily use my XB1 for streaming Netflix or other shows just to get some use out of it and save some wear and tear on my PS4.

XanderZane3021d ago

Xbox One seems to get a lot of talk and attention every time an article comes to N4G. lol!! I'm sure there will be a lot of talk about XBox One/Scorpio during the E3 and at the end of the year. Pretty sure we'll see some announcements before the E3 gets here. Yes, there is a lot of talk about Switch & Zelda, because the system just launched and the Zelda game is great. So that's a given. Will there be the same kind of talk a year from now? With PS4 releasing so many 1st & 3rd party exclusives this year, there will always be PS4 talk. Just shows that console gaming isn't dead.

Automatic793021d ago (Edited 3021d ago )

@XanderZane,

The same people talking about no games on Xbox One now are also the same people who want to shit on Xbox games when they are released. I wouldn't pay them no mind. Hypocrisy runs deep with these fanboys. Some of them forget how they bragged about third party games and no need for exclusives. Now that Xbox One is enjoying great third party titles like Resident Evil, For Honor, Ghost Recon and Mass Effect, plus exclusives like Halo Wars and Voodoo Vince now they want to move goal post and act as if the third party games dont exist. What's even more sad is they bragging about exclusives meanwhile third party games sell higher on their platform. It's all bragging childish bs.

WOLFofWALLSTREET3021d ago

Ya the cancelation of Scalebound was a huge blow

threefootwang3021d ago

Just like Sony had it's slow period between 2013-2015 Xbox is clearly going through the same phase.

However It's been said time and again that alot of internal shuffling went around after Mattrick was given the boot and Spencer took over.

Spencer himself has also commented on players concerns over the lack of 1st party titles and that he's reworking the first party scene.

If you haven't yet, check out the IGN podcast with Phil Spencer. And if you already checked Septic then you're well aware that this entire article is completely irrelevant with that Podcast.

Also, whatever happened to boycotting and ignoring articles from Gamingbolt? Oh right, because it's bashing Xbox it's automatically ok.

guyman3020d ago

Switch has more exclusives than Xbox One. The last Microsoft game I purchased was Gears of Microtransactions 4

XanderZane3020d ago

The Switch has Zelda. Any other exclusive out on the Switch isn't even worth talking about. Wait for Mario Odyssey. XB1 still has more exclusives. There are lots 3rd party games on PS4 and XB1 they will never be on the Switch. The Wii U had mostly exclusives and that didn't help it much. Having only exclusives for a game console won't do much for the game console. Systems like the Neo-Geo & Turbographix had mostly nothing but exclusives and they both died pretty quickly.

Rippcity3021d ago

A new Metroid Prime type game would definitely force me to buy a Switch. I have no intention of getting one otherwise but Metroid is due for a new badass installment.

@Eddie I disagree. I am super interested in the Scorpio but I will admit it's not entirely for the upcoming games. The Xbox (or rather Windows 10) platform is doing great things for gamers. It's essentially turning Xbox into PC for consoles. I imagine that if you own an Xbox one, you'll still be able to play games that come out on Scorpio at lower settings like PC. And any consoles that come after Scorpio will just be higher powered versions of the same platform. Couple that with the backwards compatibility they are giving us with Xbox live arcade and 360 and boom you have a platform that will always be backwards compatible and always get the newest greatest games.

I will admit though, they really need to start stepping it up in the actual games department. They have the platform, online infrastructure and even streaming service ready to go but without the games it won't mean shit. Sony has been killing them with all the awesome games coming out but Microsoft has the edge when it comes to their platform.

3021d ago
andrewsquall3021d ago

@EddieNX I thought the average 800p for Halo 5 on Xbone was absolutely fine? Wouldn't you be more interested in a Halo 6 on a brand new PROPER next gen engine built from the ground up to take advantage of the amazing GDDR5 architecture of Scorpio?
No, just essentially Halo 5 at 4k is enough to buy a Scorpio for you?

joab7773020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

That is a serious issue though. They are already lagging behind and even when they do release Scorpio, you will be able to play whatever comes out on PC. So odd!

And Halo needs a better sp. It's needs something to excite us. MP is superb though!

frostypants3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

@Captain_Tom, not sure if serious. 8K isn't gonna be a common thing in gaming for ages. Even PC is a long way off from handling that. You're talking 4x more necessary processing power to push that vs. 4K (which itself is only starting to become common). Besides, you reach a point where the human eye won't be able to see the pixels without quite literally smashing your face against the screen.

On a related note, Halo is boring.

CaptainObvious8783021d ago

My prediction is that MS is going to show games that are expected to release WAAAY into the future. The accurate narrative of xbox "has no games" has been a strong talking point in the past, but after the cancellation of scalebound that's all you ever hear now when discussing the xbone, and rightly so. MS are well aware of this and will do anything the can at E3, whether it be slight manipulations of truth to bold face lies, to counter that narrative.

They will do a spectacular smoke and mirrors display. All flash, zero substance. The gullible sheep will eat it up, and we'll get a barrage articles saying how ms is back in the game and they're still firmly supporting their console, blah blah blah.

Meanwhile, it's years before those games release, some of them might get cancelled, and if they do finally release some of them might just be ok instead of must haves.

And this is just the history of MS, ever since they entered the console space. I don't know why anyone supports this company.

3021d ago
CaptainObvious8783021d ago

@Tybe

You actually made me chuckle. Well done, sir.

I'm very fortunate, though. I've never bought an ms console, so I've never been burnt by them. My perspective is that of an outsider looking in. I still have a bias, but I can be a lot more objective than someone that's invested thousands of dollars and hours into their consoles.

Sirk7x3021d ago

The first Xbox definitely moved the industry forward. It was powerful, allowing it to run games the competition couldn't, it had internal storage and decent media capabilities for the time, and Xbox Live changed online gaming forever. The 360, although initially plagued with hardware problems, was cheaper and easier to develop for than the PS3. I like my Xbox One, but I feel like the entire concept of it was a huge misstep opposed to what had been offered in previous generations.

annoyedgamer3021d ago

I always wonder what they think Scorpio is going to do other than having better graphics and res than ps4/pro ??
Is it going to save the xbox brand ??
Is it going to set the world on fire ??
Is it going to outsell ps4??
What about the games ..how are they going to solve the huge gap in power without making their main base feel left out ?? (Ps4 owners doesn't have that problem because the differeance are minor and mostly same graphics but higher setting on pro)

Nope it's not going to do any of that
Pro didn't set the world on fire nor it making base ps4 owners want to upgrade
The ps4 slim is always going to be the frontcenter for Sony in sales with the vast majoity of ps4 userbase and developers go to hardware as lead system not the pro
So what hope does Scorpio bring to xbox brand unless the system is next gen system that have exclusives and not just mid gen upgrade
Are they going to treat their main base as 2nd class how is that going to work out for them ??

Man, microsoft is in deep trouble this gen if scorpio didn't live up to it hype

Yohshida3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

@Gamer4lifz

Better Graphics was enough for Playstation 4 to be on top. Look at what both consoles offered the first year and you might cry about how little you got on PS4.

He is talking about E3. Its the only Show MS does the entire Year. Sony does 3 Shows every year to show games. Phil isn't announcing his games 3 Years out anymore and quote: "Im holding games close to my chest and don't want to announce them too early"

Ye, new games are coming and with scorpio a lot more PC support is happening. Do you really think they don't make games anymore?

Also Quote Phil Spener: "We are investing currently in new ip and FIRST PARTY STUDIOS"

Scorpio is the next gen already. Yes, they market it as part of the Xbox One System. Its because you play with the controllers you got, the games you own on the new console. Just see for yourself at E3.

What else do you want? Ah I guess Xbox to die, right?

Ron_Danger3020d ago (Edited 3020d ago )

@videogamelab

Wait.... you think better graphics is what sold people on PS4 over XB1?

It has nothing to do with MS' original message for the XB1? Do I really need to link all of the online polls of purchase interest between the 2 consoles after their announcements?

The reason why each console is in the state they're in can be summed up exactly the same for both: past, present, and future.

If you honestly think graphics are what sold people on PS4, then you might be the most confidently ignorant person on this site.
