"The one bit of hope we have here is that Microsoft don’t have a habit of announcing games years in advance like Sony do"
That's not entirely true.

Crackdown 3: announced June 2014, release 2017 (?)
Scalebound: announced June 2014, set for release in 2017, cancelled
Cuphead: announced June 2014, release 2017 (?)

Neonridr3077d ago (Edited 3077d ago )

Cuphead has nothing to do with MS though (MS paid for the game but weren't producing it themselves), they can't exactly force an indie team to finish a game. We all thought Cuphead would have long since been out by now.

Tumaras3077d ago

No MSFT included it in their E3 presentation. So while it's an Indie game, it was shown as part of their portfolio in that presentation to market XB1. Sure Sony has done it from time to time (also with third-parties), but Microsoft is getting pretty bad both about having a very short exclusives list, and the few they have end up being announced way too far in advance. And games being cancelled before release due to those super-long lead times don't help either. Not to mention a few disappointing recent exclusive releases (Halo 5, Quantum Break, Recore, etc).

Liqu1d3077d ago

Cuphead was announced by MS.

Neonridr3077d ago

@Tumaras - disappointing how? Sales wise? I mean Halo 5 does sit at 84 and Quantum Break at 77 (metacritic wise). I am no expert but usually that means those two games are definitely above average.

thekhurg3077d ago (Edited 3077d ago )

They've lost their focus. Just think about scalebound. Each time it was shown it was on a different platform. First the xbone then it was shown on the S with some improvements. I bet MS wanted a scorpio version shown at e3 and it was just too much for the team. On top of probably being forced to get a w10 version up and running.

You can add the cancelled Fable to that list. And while you're at it, add the "entertainment" studios focused on gaming that Microsoft also shut down.

Z5013077d ago

Off the top of my head.

Alan Wake
Splinter Cell Conviction (Hobo Sam)

Godmars2903077d ago (Edited 3077d ago )

What?

MS has only insisted that exclusives don't matter, even and especially as they've talked up exclusives and exclusive content. The biggest contradiction in gaming to be sure, but there are far too many examples of which direction they lean.

SmielmaN3077d ago

They are rudderless right now. They want to be equal or better than Sony but don't produce the variety of gaming content. They have found themselves slowly becoming Nintendo where they rely on a 3-4 yearly game cycle. Halo/forza/gears/timed exclusive Christmas money hat. Just like Nintendo, not enough variety and over reliance on franchises that are becoming stagnant.

Godmars2903077d ago

Nintendo relies on a 3-4 release cycle? Think you mean they have 3-4 IPs which are generally recognizable, if not wholly iconic, in the mainstream market. IPs that are well known enough that divergent titles can be explored like a racing or party games whereas with MS, all they've got is the same shooter/driving sim series.

Also, rudderless? What about the Phil Spencer the Great Savoir? Surely he'll put the Xbox brand back on course to what MS wanted it to be, which was a subscription based revenue stream which used online-dependent games, provided primarily through 3rd parties, and user meta-data gathered via Kinect and sold to advertisers to make easy cash.

I mean, its not like with only the product itself left to sell itself to gamers MS has no idea what to do but drift back towards XBL-Gold and force an online-only mandate onto all of their big games, is it?

A project such as Scalebound couldn't have possibly been completed sooner, if at all, without the online four-player MP segments, now could it?

jznrpg3077d ago (Edited 3077d ago )

It was bad already, its just getting worse . I am really disappointed Scalebound is cancelled, I really wanted to play it. Fable got cancelles and I could of cared less because of its free to play model and it not being a true Fable, but this one really hurts them, the one Japanese exclusive (console) died. This could really hurt them long term, they nay never get any japanese support except multiplat or paying a ton for one.

Rhezin3077d ago

no kidding. Glad I jumped ship in '08.

_-EDMIX-_3077d ago

Scalebound and an impressive Fable 4 definitely would have got me on board to caring about this publishers games

As of right now the only Microsoft publish title I'm going to purchase this generation is going to be sea of Thieves.

Brazz3077d ago (Edited 3077d ago )

hun... isn't sea of Thieves. free to play MMO? well, i guess you are not buying anything than, lol!

edit: my mistake, sea of Thieves is not F2P.

Deadlead3077d ago (Edited 3077d ago )

Why couldn't MS just fund a true RPG sequel to Fable? Yeah Fable 3 sucked big time, but that series was loaded with potential if done right. Fable should stand as a lesson that dumbing down a game does not equal mass market appeal just a shittier game.

_-EDMIX-_3077d ago

@brazz- I was about to say I Googled it to make sure lol

@dead- I don't really believe anything is wrong with the Fable series I actually think something is something wrong with Microsoft's expectations, simply because if a title like Infamous can barely sell 2 million copies and entry yet it still exists AS A SERIES, there is no reason why Fable cannot exist.

BG115793077d ago

It's actually pretty bad. Look at platinum portfolio. They have worked with Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, making exclusives and multiplateforms. Even if the results were not equal, some of their works being better than others, they always delivered the game. It's only now, when they were working in an MS, that they had a game cancelled!
This is a big sign, it doesn't matter what MS is saying for damage control.
Platinum are veterans, and do good, very good games. Right now, I'm worried for them, because we don't know what kind of deal they made with Microsoft. I just hope, they overcome this.

Gaming4Life19813077d ago (Edited 3077d ago )

Platinum games haven't had a great game since 2010 with vanquish so they used to make great games is what I would say. The legend of Korra, transformers devastation, star fox zero/guard, and turtles mutants in manhattan all suck Imo.

I really want to know why scalebound was cancelled to be honest cause there must have been a major reason behind it being cancelled. I do think it hurt ms but not because they lost a exclusive, their credibility is in question. I mean this is the third game this gen that has been cancelled, how can they expect gamers to be confident their games will eventually come out anymore. Just my opinion but they are going to have to own e3 this year.

What's funny is that so many on this site was downing scalebound since day 1 saying things like this game looks bad, plays bad, will fail etc but now that it's cancelled they making a huge epic deal about it.

Oh yea i completely forgot about bayonetta 2, I really enjoyed that game. Nier looks promising but I did not name it because it's not out so after I complete it ill judge how good it is. I tried to like transformers devastation but in the end I just didn't like it.

Sunny_D3077d ago

They released Bayonetta 2 not too long ago. Now they have Nier Automata coming which is looking really polished.

jaymacx3077d ago

Bayonetta 2 says Hi . So does Nier

DazaMc3077d ago

I loved Transformers.

BG115793076d ago

You guys forgotten Metalgear Revengeance! These guys worked for/with Hydro Kojima that is a tyrant perfectionist and delivered an great game! They ha e worked with almost everyone in the business, following every demand, budget and type of people and managed to deliver. Even if the game didn't ended up to be great, it never felt has it was unfinished or was buggy. Not to be able to deliver a game for MS speaks very loudly about on how MS deals with their partners.

Hideki Kamiya wants to revive Scalebound: 'Let's do it, Phil'

Hideki Kamiya is still interested in developing Scalebound, after the PlatinumGames and Microsoft action game was cancelled back in 2017.

ZwVw102d ago

He's been begging for the past three years. That ship has long sailed. Besides, Phil's a fake. When's the last time he delivered on a game the fans asked for? Still waiting on him to greenlight KI4.

InUrFoxHole101d ago

@8bit
Yeah I mentioned that below. Although in comparison concord was a bigger failure.

MetroidFREAK21102d ago

I mean I'm all for it... I'd buy it for PS5 since Xbox is doing these multiplatform releases now

MetroidFREAK21102d ago

Well, I vastly prefer physical versions of games, and I can't do that with my Series S... sooooooo assume what you will

Lexreborn2102d ago

Scalebound was my reasoning for buying and Xbox one. Legit my biggest let down last gen

raWfodog102d ago

Same here. That was going to be the game I'd buy a Xbox One for back in the day. It'd be good if they did revive it and improve on what they had at the time.

Chocoburger102d ago

Seems odd to be asking for it now that he left Platinum Games. He'll be busy with Okami 2 for a number of years, does he expect to develop the game at Clovers studio now? Would they be picking up where they left off, or starting over again? Any of the previous team members, or just him?

I doubt Phil would fund it again, but if so, then that would be good news, also fund a new Banjo as well as Conker games while you're at it. I miss Conker!

Michiel1989102d ago

doesn't seem odd at all, he'd want work and that game even though it suffered some bad press with the cancellation and stuff is still something that people want to see (i think)

Cancelled Games That Still Upsetti My Spaghetti

As a wise man once said: what be will, be will, and sometimes games just get canceled, whether it’s due to publisher meddling, a lack of funds or the creative vision simply not panning out.

Eight Days for me

Really would have enjoyed a buddy cop game with a Lethal Weapon like tone.

helicoptergirl152d ago

The only one that really bothered me was when Sony wouldn't fund Days Gone 2. That announcement made me literally feel nauseous. I felt sick in the guts. That's the first time Sony had done something that actually physically hurt me lol. I'm still bummed that there won't be a Days Gone 2.

lucasnooker102d ago

I would have loved the getaway 3! The original is still one of my favourite PS2 titles

Canceled Video Games That Still Hurt The Most

The cancellation of Rainbow Six Patriots, Alice Asylum, and Scalebound, among others, have hit players and fans like a truck over time.

Chocoburger328d ago

Advent Rising was planned to be a trilogy, and we never got parts 2 and 3.

Also wish THPS 10 was never canceled back in 2008. They were releasing the games at too fast a pace and just needed to slow it down instead of abandon the series entirely to make endless Guitar Hero games.

Stupid Activision executives.

RaidenBlack326d ago

My biggest "disappointment" for me, will always be Kojima's original MGS Rising from E3 2010.
The reveal trailer will always top my Gaming Expo highlights list, followed by MGS5 Ground Zeroes reveal at PAX 2013 and God of War reveal at E3 2016.
It looked soo good and cool. My heart sank when the whole Platinum's Revengeance thing got announced.
My 2nd disappointment is another Kojima, the Silent Hills.
3rd is tie b/w Rainbow 6: Patriots and the original Ghost Recon Future Soldier 2010 version.
4th is Unreal Tournament 4/2014
5th is Half Life Return to Ravenholm
(Dis)Honorable mentions: Delta Force Angel Falls, Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, Fallout Van Buren, Capcom's Deep Down, Original Duke Nukem Forever 2001 version, Prey 2, Command & Conquer: Generals 2, Timesplitters 4, Alice: Asylum, Mercenaries 3, KOTOR3, Star Wars 1313, StarCraft: Ghost, Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun, Whore of the Orient, Fable Legends, Star Wars Project Ragtag and maybe Agent?
Half Life 2 Episode 3 should top my list, but I still believe it'll happen. You know what might break the gaming internet and steal some of GTA 6's thunder? If Valve just posts '3' in any of their social account.

Chocoburger326d ago

I love Rising Revengeance, but I would have loved to see MGS: Rising, where we got to see Raiden's body destroyed at Area 51, and play some portions of MGS 4 from Raiden's perspective.

Good pick.

rlow1326d ago

Did you see play Advent Rising? If so, what did you think of it?

Chocoburger326d ago

Yes I played it long ago. Its kind of like Mass Effect, years before Mass Effect. You have to make choices which permanently affects the story.

Near the end of the game you have a bunch of super power abilities, I remember a shockwave stomp attack which wrecked enemies.

It was rushed out unpolished, so it had a lot of framerate issues, but I did end up having fun with it. Been over 15 years since I played it, so my memory is fuzzy, but I do remember I was looking forward to a sequel which never came.

XiNatsuDragnel327d ago

We need scalebound, Alice asylum, rainbow 6 patriots, battlefront 3, and half life episode 3 plz 🙏 if not official devs, fans make those games a reality do what cd project red dev said I have to look up the article but if something can't happen themselves then it's up to the fans to make it ourselves.

Relientk77326d ago

I played Alice: Madness Returns a couple years ago and it blew me away. What an amazing game and it still holds up. When EA said no to Alice Asylum I was so mad. EA also said something like "Alice is an important IP to us" Yeah, right an important IP that you do nothing with. License it out so we can get that 3rd game from American McGee.

INMATEofARKHAM326d ago

Interesting and pretty solid list but I would day it's Star Wars 1313 that hurts the most in terms of Star War games.

DaReapa326d ago

Honorable mentions go to Eight Days, Agent, and Whore of the Orient to name a few.

Deeeeznuuuts326d ago

All of them! But none more than Agent for me, how good a rockstar espionage game could have been! 😭
The getaway too!
