Polygon’s 2016 Games of the Year #10: The Last Guardian

In retrospect, one of the biggest downsides of The Last Guardian’s 10-year development cycle is that people knew about it. Not for those who worked on the game, of course.

They tried to hate it, but couldn't.

after finishing TLG who else thought that Uead s trilogy (Ico, trico ,sotC) and lore could easily become the more mature Zelda IP that Playstation needs ...they have consistent world and more games with different protagonits/creatures could easily fit in

ecchiless2670d ago

Sony needs to keep Ueda doing games for PS, give him the resources and the team to expand his universe, i like the art and direction of his games, sotc is for my his best game yet.

The main protagonist should be named Chain XD

Iteresting proposal

I often wonder what a slighlty more mature Zelda might be like.

coolbeans2669d ago (Edited 2669d ago )

C'mon, detailing his worries with a bad first impression (in his opinion) now means they must've had it out for the game all along? Get real. In the end, they adore many qualities of it and want to put it on their reader's radars--if they haven't yet.

Do you see how immature your response looks in this context?

Polygon accepted $750,000 from Microsoft to create a ~$75,000 promotional documentary

On top of that, Polygon had some very questionable scores for PlayStation games for a long time (and articles). It has gotten a bit better, but let's not pretend all of this didn't happen.

"Polygon had some very questionable scores for PlayStation games"

They have ONE score that the masses of playstation fanboys don't agree with and all of a sudden they are forever linked to being paid for by MS.

Let's not even take into consideration that Polygon has rated almost every Xbox game lower than any score given to Playstation games.

@Overload

Glad to see criticizing the framing of your first comment leads us back to the generic Polygon conspiracy.

"On top of that, Polygon had some very questionable scores for PlayStation games for a long time (and articles). It has gotten a bit better, but let's not pretend all of this didn't happen."

At this point, who doesn't have some "questionable scores" on PlayStation games according to a specific subset of petulant N4G users? EDGE could continuously get crap for a 7 or 8 given to God of War III and MGSIV respectively. Not all Playstation games are going to be considered to be made of gold to everyone. And I have to question some of these examples that article uses to try in proving your point too. For one, it doesn't really help to add random forum links recycling complaints just to bolster your numbers. Second, those examples used (TLOU, KZ: Shadowfall, etc.) don't really strike me as being some stealthy attempt to hurt PS exclusives when their scores aren't really so far off the beaten path. Considering TLOU just a good game instead of some absolute masterpiece is enough to sharpen the pitchforks? KZ: Shadowfall was quite a contentious launch game too where near-universal criticism was passed on its SP campaign. Third, a quick glance at Polygon's metacritic page shows they tend to score less than average critics in general.

http://www.metacritic.com/p...

Several of their PS-exclusive examples on the first couple of pages show higher averages than the metacritic score too.

In the end, all of this is really a distraction from my main point that's only tangentially related to the intention of my first response anyways. I'm criticizing the way you framed that reviewer's EARLY PREVIEW as him "trying to hate the game," despite coming out enjoying it in the long run and the site honoring it in their GOTY top 10. Naturally, this leads to questioning the WHOLE site's past actions to save face. Congrats on making me waste my time, I guess.

Polygon sure has low standards. TLG is simply not even a contender for GOTY.

I've played 15, and I wouldn't consider any of those underrated TBH. Some of them are pretty high rated.

banger88136d ago

That's amazing, Gamingbolt actually put all 15 games on the same page.

shinoff2183135d ago

I. Not seeing anything on that list underrated. I never played concrete genie, the ASTRO vr,and one other but I forgot the name already. Nothing on there was underrated at all imo.

persona4chie135d ago

There’s only 4 of those games I never played, and no most of those aren’t underrated.

The Last Guardian Is One of Gaming’s Most Beautiful Depictions of Friendship

Friendship is hard to depict accurately, but The Last Guardian does a good job of showing all its ups and downs through Trico and the boy.

Technical issues aside, this is easily one of my favorite games from last gen.

ClayRules2012820d ago (Edited 820d ago )

I couldn’t agree more. I’ll never forget the emotional experience I had with this game. After waiting all those years, and than to finally play it. It was a visual beauty, along with offering a story/friendship between the 2 characters that was unique and unforgettable. Far surpassed my expectations. A masterpiece!

Technical issues aside, never have I played anything quite like it!

Magog820d ago

I enjoyed the game but it started out too simple and easy. If the entire game was as intense and challenging as the last 20% it would have been a 10/10 experience.

EvertonFC820d ago

Great game, so underrated. One of my favourites and top 20 games of all time

Phoenix76820d ago

I managed to grab the collectors edition for £40 about a year after it released. Was an enjoyable game, but I had just finished Shadow of the colossus, and whilst I enjoyed it, it was not as good when compared.
