PS4 Pro’s Color Compression Technology Is Definitely A Net Gain, Says Former Lionhead Developer

The PS4 Pro has a variety of new hardware and software tricks, all of which work to make the console punch above its weight, and deliver games that look substantially better than they do on the standard PS4 system.

Mark Cerny is indeed "The Renaissance Man" of gaming.
Kudos for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 & 3 and Crash Bandicoot series too, Mark C.
I remember the ole PSOne doing amazing polygon compression tech also now it's about colours.
PlayStation tech always make me smile.

@ Rashid Sayed
Read your Video Game History book, mate.
When it comes to gameplay Mark-san rivals Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto.
The only difference with Mark is he is always way a head of Miyamoto-san when it come to progressing gameplay. From Sonic the Hedgehog to Disruptor to Crash Bandicoot to Spyro the Dragon to Jak & Daxter to Ratchet and Clank to to Uncharted to Death Stranding.
See how his gameplay progressed? His progression as a game designer leaves Miyamoto-san in the dust.

And don't get me started on hardware and commercial success.

Indeed he has made some great contributions to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro but I am not sure how he is the "The Renaissance Man" of gaming. He is indeed very talented but I don't think developing good hardware equates to renaissance in video games. Honestly, that title should only be reserved for someone who has made progression in gameplay.

Dude, just because he works very very quietly behind the scenes doesn't mean his work is sub par to the likes of gameplay gods like Shigeru Miyamoto or Yu Suzuki or Hideo Kojima or a hardware gods like Ken Kutaragi. Mark is a true American-Japanese gaming god. Just look at his great gameplay legacy.

For years he worked with Sega in Japan and the United States, where he worked on various Master System and Genesis releases, most notably Sonic the Hedgehog 2. He was the vice president and then president of Universal Interactive Studios.
He has worked extensively with Naughty Dog (on the Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter series and the first Uncharted game), Insomniac Games (on the Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank and Resistance series), and Sony. From his extensive experience on the "dos and don'ts" in the game industry he has developed a teaching "method" for game development. His method prefers a free-form, pre-production stage that explores a game's viability prior to full development. For example, he advocates that if the first level produced doesn't excite customers, then the game idea should be set aside before too much effort is put into it.
The International Game Developers Association awarded Cerny with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Game Developers Choice Awards (IGDA) in 2004. IGNA stated, "It's rare to find a 'jack-of-all-trades' who not only has the high-level vision for great game design but can act as the glue to adhere all the pieces together. His unusual but highly effective methodology has brought us some of the most entertaining games in history." He was described as "a master collaborator". His Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon games have collectively sold more than 30 million units.
In 2010, at the 13th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, Mark Cerny was inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame. "Mark Cerny is the closest we have come to a modern-day Da Vinci," said Joseph Olin, then-president of the AIAS. "What he does isn't restricted to a single aspect of game creation, he really is a Renaissance man. He is a diversely accomplished game designer, producer, programmer and technologist, fluent in Japanese and one of the foremost Western experts on the Japanese game market. He's also one of the only top-level independents in a business dominated by institutions."
On February 20, 2013 at the global PlayStation 4 unveiling event in New York City Mark Cerny was revealed as the console's lead architect.

Goldby2718d ago

hows that launch title Zelda doing on the WiiU?

UltraNova2718d ago (Edited 2718d ago )

For a guy who breaths Microsoft, I'd say that ^ was a mighty missfortunate use of MS defending time in favour of another less threatening competitor...

"By all means necessary"...comes to mind.

kevnb2718d ago (Edited 2718d ago )

isnt it amd tech? I mean not to take away anything from Cerny, but this is all AMD.

Aenea2718d ago

Actually, it's not... Sony created and patented several technologies that AMD implemented with Sony's help. They have a deal in place that allows AMD to use the Sony tech inside their desktop GPUs.

So yes, the GPU is still made by AMD but it contains tech developed by Sony...

kevnb2718d ago (Edited 2718d ago )

Huh? This is clearly something that came from AMDs own road map and made it into the console. It will probably be in the scorpio as well.

kevnb2718d ago (Edited 2718d ago )

except some key media who seem paid to trash it a little. Or maybe the key media just doesnt want to upgrade their video players :).

XXanderXX2718d ago (Edited 2718d ago )

even though I don't play Garry's Mod, it is still bad

Inverno15h ago

I was reading it's all just false reports from a troll who's done things like this in the past and not Nintendo themselves.

-Foxtrot5h ago

Well the games creator Gary Newman confirmed it himself on Twitter.
