Why Buy PS4 Pro Without Owning a 4K TV?

Is there a reason to why buy PS4 Pro if you don't own a 4K TV? It seems like the tech is wasted, but there are actually a few reasons why you may want to.

Out of curiosity, did they ever say that VR runs better on the Pro? I know it was hinted at before the announcement, but I don't remember Sony ever saying that it would improve your VR experience. I may have just missed the announcement.

Eonjay2748d ago

Yes at the reveal event they touched on it. You can also see a notable increase in resolution in Farpoint running on Pro. Here, take a look:

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Neonridr2748d ago

only if devs are willing to optimize their games for it. It won't magically run the games better just by plugging it in. Almost like how devs have to create a "Pro mode" to have normal games look and/or run better it will be the same with VR. Devs will have to make a Pro VR mode which will run the game natively at a higher resolution before being downsampled to the headset (or provide a more stable framerate).

So while it has the potential to improve performance, it is up to the devs to actually utilize it.

S2Killinit2747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

@Eonjay
For the record, that FarPoint game with the Aim Controller for PSVR is one of the COOLEST things I've ever seen in games. I know I'm jumping the gun here, but it might be the "killer app" for PSVR.

Here is another video on it:

uth112747d ago

They haven't said a whole lot about it.

I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed when their Pros arrive because I see lots of assumptions but I suspect few games will utilize the extra power in the beginning. That goes for VR' and traditional games

XStation4pio_Pro2747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

vr needs more power than the standard ps4 can provide to produce a similar level of graphics. This is largely because you need extremely fast frame rates (preferably around 90+ fps) to reduce lag which causes sickness and not only do you need high frame rates, you have to render them twice (one for each eye). One might argue that even the PS4 Pro and Scorpio still won't be able to produce the best VR visuals. Regardless, considering there isn't enough power as is, you need as much as possible. The ps4 Pro is twice the power of the ps4 so of course its going to be better.

BQ322747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

It will help a quite a bit but I don't think Sony wants to dwell on it and risk cannibalizing PSVR sales by alienating OG PS4 users. It strikes me as interesting timing to release these two products back to back. Seems like a lot of people may pick one or the other. I know I will be trading/selling my OG ps4 and Xbox one to nullify the cost of the Pro after just buying the VR.

ArchangelMike2747d ago

In the PS4 Pro FAQ they state that "that said, PS4 Pro’s upgraded processing power will give VR developers the ability to enhance their experiences with higher quality graphics, smoother or more stable framerates, and visual improvements in supported games. Developers can also choose to add PS4 Pro features to PS VR games post launch via a downloadable update."

Smh do these "journalists " even watch the reveals anymore? This was talked about in the reveal.
I'll put it like this for the trolls.
Why buy a ps4 pro if you don't have a 4k tv....same reason people bought a xbo slim and plan to buy a Scorpio.
Because they want to.

Mike, below..true 4k = native 4k...there are several games that will run native 4k.. but to your point there will be no system running "true 4k" 100% of the time. MS has confirmed this, and sony has confirmed this. So just know right now before you start eating plates of crow....the scorpio is said to run games at native 4k "if they are at native 1080p" ...now think about how many games xbox has that are 1080p...forza.
Halo will be upscale 4k with locked resolution. Since it was a dynamic resolution game they said these games will no longer be dynamic but locked.
Lol I just can't wait to see you guys boast about power and 4k only to find out the ps4 pro will have just as many, if not more "true 4k games"

mikeslemonade2747d ago

I would suggest to play Pro on 1080p. The Pro isn't even strong enough to do true 4K. So I'd argue it's best to play on 1080p with all the settings turned on high.

Sevir2747d ago

Lol! For the same reason why Xbox fannies are talking about buying Scorpio without even seeing it and they don't even have a 4k... they just know the Machine will benefit HD TVs

bouzebbal2747d ago

because it enhances even the HD experience..
i liked the reveal a lot, Cerny went through every single aspect and improvement.

Teflon022747d ago

Neon, you see the thing is... Sony has already stated even without it, some games may run smoother or better but that can't advertise it because it depends on how the game is built and runs. Example a game like infamous second son will likely benefit from it if you're playing a unlocked framerate. But a game like Ratchet and clank that plays at a consistent 30 won't see any differences. Look at xbox one titles on the s for example, Ms said they run the same on both but the s which is slightly boosted for the extra features actually runs a average of 2-3 frames better in anything. The pro will likely run everything atleast solid 30 if it has that and games like bf4 will likely hit 60fps more than the one moment when you stare at a floor lmao

danny8182747d ago

Mark Cerny was putting me to sleep but they did man. Extra processing power allows for that.

Eidolon2748d ago

Not my reason. Smoother Non-patched performance, and better graphics for patched games, 5ghz, and probably faster over UI speed, plus I need a second PS4. :p

snoopgg2747d ago

Plus you can always buy a 4k tv later.

pcz2747d ago

buying a ps4 pro with no 4k tv is like buying a superbike fairing kit to put on your bicycle

Eidolon2747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

I already told you my reasons for PS4 pro, no 4K TV needed :)

Ju2747d ago

Exactly that. Well, and I had a chance to get a 4k TV. But that wasn't the primary reason. A all in all smoother PS4 experience would be appreciated, well, which is by all means not bad at all. But it just costs $50 more. So why not?

Teflon022747d ago

Using a 4K or a checkered 4 K imaged downed to 1080p looks better than a 1080p image by far so that alone. Plus higher framerates in games that aren't at consistent 30s and 60s.

rpvenom2747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

i didnt even realize it had 5ghz wifi.. thats what i need in my life.. my current ps4 is struggling with the 2.4 currently, but mostly because i live in a condo and there are tons of 2.4 users

Eidolon2746d ago

Right, i tried the power line ethernet but my house is too old. and my powerful microwave completely destroys 2.4ghz, keeping on lower band helps.

S2Killinit2747d ago

Because even without a 4K tv, being 2-3X more powerful, the games will look that much better. 4K isn't necessary to use its power. 4K is just one way you can put its power to use.

KwietStorm_BLM2747d ago

No. Because performance. VR just falls under the same umbrella.

Muzikguy2747d ago

I'd do it, but I think I'd make sure to have a 4K Tv shortly after. They both are definitely on my "want" list

XanderZane2747d ago

Not getting PSVR until after I get a PS4 Pro. Not getting a PS4 Pro until I get a 4K UHDTV with HDR10 support. So I'll be waiting at least a year before all of this happens.

G20WLY2747d ago

Each to their own, but 4k HDR is not a requirement to see very worthwhile benefits from PS4 Pro. Like, not at all. That'll be why everyone else wants it now and the 4k HDR TV can follow.

XanderZane2747d ago

@G20WLY
Not going to look much different from a regular PS4 game if you don't have a 4K UHDTV that supports HDR10. Will still be in 1080P and the fps will probably be improved. OG PS4 and PS4 Slim don't do 4K games, just 4K streaming. You still need the 4K UHDTV. So, no problem waiting.

Maxor2747d ago

Sure, as if I'm going to spend nearly a grand to play casual games.

peppeaccardo2747d ago

Gents I got my VR yesterday .. I love it but I have noticed that at times it is like it has little hiccups, feels like the camera + VR is trying to re-calibrate it self. Has anyone notice this ? It worked fine for the first night of intensive EVE Valkirie space fights ... any help on this much appreciated !

RyanShutup2747d ago

I had the same issue when I had the little box sitting on top of my PS4 to save space. I think it might be heat related, when I moved it everything ran smoothly again ... hope that helps !

kraenk122747d ago

Try different positioning...eliminate other factors like lights or mirroring surfaces.

There are certain tracking issues reported for a number of people though. Restarting the PS4 once a day is told to help for some.

Bahamut2747d ago

Because framerate boosts, as well as other graphical improvements.

zb1ftw7772747d ago

Nope.

No VR improvements whatsoever so far.

PSVR and 1080p/60fps are the reasons I am getting a Pro next month. I may get a 4K TV later this year so that will be a bonus, but if not, I will be happy with improvements to PSVR (hopefully) and a more solid HD experience with PS4 games.

DMZ_P2748d ago

I am guessing that even some un-optimized game will run a little better due to the higher CPU clock rate. I think I've read that this happened on X1s with some games getting a little more FPS.

Ju2747d ago

If you think about what 3% did to a stable frame rate, imagine what 250% will do to it. Not to mention that the HDD is much faster.

--Onilink--2748d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

I wouldn't really expect most games to jump from 30fps to 60fps. The CPU upgrade wasn't that big. Same with texture quality, since RAM is the same amount and just slightly faster. (and some games like Horizon where the game was designed to run at 30hz in mind, so a jump to 60 isnt really that straightforward to make)

Expect improvements on things like lightning, shadows, rendering, effects, etc though.

Plus the fact that supersampling to 1080p will help a lot to reduce jaggies and stuff like that.

If anything, I'd say we can probably expect to remove most drops on games that run at 30fps, to make sure its truly locked. And maybe some games that could push to an unlocked framerate that goes close to 60fps, like Tomb Raider, but not really locked at it.

Neonridr2747d ago

yeah, I am not expecting every title to achieve these results. But the closer we can get, the better.

TheBrit2747d ago

you are correct because a lot of the games are Locked in at a certain frame rate to avoid problems down the line so unless the developer patches it which means they have to certify the game runs from beginning to end in the most intense showdown areas especially, at a higher frame rate, then you will not see a frame rate increase.

In big games where there is a lot of action, I am not so sure a dev is going to re-visit a game just to take advantage of a few more frames. Not while their resources are probably already working on another new game.

Just my opinion.

ExplodingJuice2747d ago

Black Friday my friend. Get your TV then. I am in the same boat as you with a Day 1 PS4 Pro purchase.

Neonridr2747d ago

yeah, Canada the deals aren't as crazy. I have my heart set on a specific Sammy 4K so I will keep watching until I see it at a reasonable price.

cyx2747d ago

Yup sony definitely played their cards right launching the pro before black Friday. Hopefully people will utilize the oppurtunity and snag some good deals

jmac532747d ago

Prepare to get trampled. Cyber Monday is more my thing so I don't have to mingle with the filthy populous.

kraenk122747d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

They already stated that it's more likely they'll increase fidelity than going for 1080/60, especially because of the slow CPU.

Neonridr2747d ago

yeah fair enough, I just hope that the Pro can bring improvements for the 1080p crowd too. So if it results in more effects or better AA or whatever, then that will still make the end result look better too :D

MasterCornholio2748d ago (Edited 2747d ago )

Well Sony does guarantee a minimum of 1080P with games that are enhanced* for the pro. I'm planning on getting one for that reason and also for the fact that games will be better on it.

Master of Unlocking2748d ago

Why get a PS4 Pro if you don't have a 4K TV set? Well, the Pro is going to make your games look better, even if you're running them in 1080p.
Plus it looks sweet!

DeeBeers2748d ago

If I was a playstation gamer I would trade up just to play Battlefield at 1080p 60 with more bells and whistles. Sony doesnt seem keen on releasing another console for a few years so it makes sense for core PS gamers.

Shineon2747d ago

Ive done that with the alienware alpha but I might get a ps4pro to play against gamers using a controller#tiredofgettingmybut kickedonPC

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

solideagle10h ago

you should apply in MS PR team buddy, I think you will do a great job in my humble opinion :)

Sonic18817h ago

I thought darthv72 and Obscure_Observer already work for Microsoft 🤔

dveio7h ago

MS: "Xbox services and content without AB up 1%, with AB up 62%. Hardware down 31%. In total a loss of 350 mill."

darthv72: "Seems about right."

MS: "Excuse m ..."

darthv72: "I don't hardly play on my consoles directly."

MS:

Lightning772h ago

What he said was facts. How he plays games is no concern of you. Don't get too mad about it.

Cacabunga9h ago

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

If service is up means their fans and fanboys accepted this model and subscribed to it. The near future you will see a big decline because the service is saturated.

shinoff21839h ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

Cacabunga8h ago

Hardware sales are so bad that Sony and Nintendo are blowing the sales off the water with their hardware.

If Xbox are losers, others aren’t..
Xbox already tried everything with Xbox live then subscriptions went down so much that they had to find something else. Their fans subscribed then reached saturation rather quickly.

Hardware and exclusive games is where it’s at! Keep gamers excited, announce decent software and people will support you

itsmebryan3h ago

@shin
Well keep it simple Sony 's operating income is down 26% and Microsoft's is up 32%. No MS spin there, just facts. 😉
Cheers

romulus232h ago

Odd that a company that touts you dont need the hardware to play is already touting another console in the works.

darthv722h ago

They are not reliant on the HW but still want to maintain a presence (no matter how small) is a good thing. It shows commitment to the craft. It reminds me of SNK and how they made games for their own hardware (Neo Geo) while also making them for others because they knew there was a market to do so. They knew they would sell more to others but also sell to their own niche fan base.

Xbox hardware revenue tanks to lowest point of Xbox Series generation

Profchaos12h ago

I'm not surprised surface is struggling they aren't relevant anymore

DOMination-1h ago

In the last two years they've started exiting the consumer market altogether. All of the newest Surface products are business models only. They can't seem to work out what they want to do with it.

XBManiac11h ago

Too expensive hardware when others offer the same or more for less? Good work, Green Team.

SimpleDad11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

"Despite some early successes for Xbox games on rival platforms, Xbox hardware is down by a massive 31 percent this quarter."
"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.

purple10110h ago

Activision: "we gonna need a bigger rucksack/backpack please"

Microsoft: "why's that"

Activision: "to carry yo' weak ass'

Profchaos10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

Top brass have also wanted to start seeing returns on the 100 billion they have put into various Xbox related moves so seeing more multiplatform games is highly likely especially from abk

It's basically saying that PlayStation is the reason Xbox is afloat right now thinks to Ps5 versions of COD

Kornholic9h ago

So basically PS and PC gamers' money is keeping Xbox on life support.

MrDead2h ago

The only growth MS will get out of the console industry is if it supports it's rivals platforms. Xbox is a pointless machine now. I can see them on a big push for live next, and they won't give up on trying to buy Steam.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos1d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers1d 8h ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken19h ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

Popsicle1d 3h ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.
