Derailing The Hype Train: What No Man's Sky Can Teach Us About Our Gaming Expectations

Gareth from WGTC writes "With the hype so spectacularly failing No Man’s Sky, this raises an important question: can such levels of anticipation ever be good?"

Sean Murry and Hello Games marketed the game poorly, no quest. Although, I do think the gaming community only has themselves to blame for over hyping this game. NMS never looked as though it was going to be this earth shattering game to end all games - it was made by a small indie team.

uth112778d ago

Exactly. I got more or less what I expected which is fine. But many others dismissed all skepticism about the game prior to release.. they are the ones demanding refunds now

Zorkaz2778d ago

THANK YOU! God I've been trying to say this for weeks, only to be shot down by a horde of angry gamers.

gamerpop2778d ago

NMS won't be the only game this year to suffer from over hype. That being said, you probably won't see such a massive fall from grace as was seen with NMS. Interesting read...

uth112778d ago

No overhype is never a good thing. I think of NMS released in its current state with normal levels of hype and indie game expectations it would have been well received and everyone would be fine waiting for post launch content like they do with other games.

The other game I worry about is Last Guardian. It was always obviously a niche title. But over the years it's taken on this level of hype. I think it will please fans of the genre, but not many of the gamers who bought into the hype.

rainslacker2778d ago

I think due to the nature of TLG hype, a lot of people still aren't really aware of what kind of game to expect should they actually get it. Those who played Ico or SOTC will pretty much know what to expect, and if they liked those games, they'll probably like TLG....and only be disappointed if they don't cry at some point. Early previews say it has good flow and interesting puzzles, which is a plus, because that would make or break the game with what the fans are expecting. The controls right now seem to be the only contention, and those saying it is somehow aged in it's graphics presentation don't seem to know this is just the art style fans of Team Ico have come to expect.

I can see the game being divisive though, because the hype was built to high levels just on the expectations that came from the prior games, and many people are building their own expectations without actually looking at it for what it is.

What I've seen so far of TLG suggests that one should expect a Team Ico game, in the Team Ico style. But no doubt, some criticism will come from those who are expecting some kind of different adventure/puzzle game.

I think Shenmue III may suffer the same fate, as the series has been built up to epic proportions, but realistically, if it holds very closely to it's roots, much of the game mechanics will seem dated by today's standards, despite being the game/s that actually set standards that are still in use today.

ApocalypseShadow2778d ago

Clear difference...

Last guardian has shown a boy and his pet in preview trailers. Current trailers show a boy and his pet. We don't know anything else accept maybe some enemies. But there is no reason that there will not be a boy and his pet in the game.

No man's sky has documented proof in video and interviews of what to expect. Not pie in the sky "we might add it later" after launch. If gamers were told some features may not be there but will be added later, no one would have had a problem. When I bought games like the original devil may cry, I expected a guy in a red coat kicking @ss. And that's what I got in the demo, then the final game. Gunstar heroes, ninja gaiden, skies of Arcadia,GT, name the games of the past and those games were 99.9% what you saw and heard.

Murray showed giant worms that move through the ground not in the game. Creatures as tall as huge trees not in the game. Portals that lead to new planets not on the game. Vehicles flying differently not in the game. And the list goes on. The base gameplay is there. But everything that gamers also wanted to see are not.

I bought it on expectation of what I saw and heard, not hype because I don't buy games based on what others buy or think I should play.I buy what the developers showed and tells me. This isn't like EA where they lied all the time that "it's in the game." Long time gamers knew when they said it, it wasn't true based on passed games they made. The irony though is that Murray used to work at EA. Making the "it's in the game" fitting for no man's sky. And it's a shame coming from the Joe danger developers.

Perjoss2778d ago

That first trailer did a lot if work in terms of hype, regardless of how the game turned out or how misleading the trailer was it was a brilliant trailer for building hype.

If you're wanting more PSVR 2 support, you should probably buy all of these games.

Speak with your wallet!

Profchaos39d ago

Bit rich to have to buy games you don't want because you want Sony to support the expensive headset they sold us which cost as much as the console it runs on beyond paying third partys to support it.
Seriously in terms of first party we have horizon on day 1 and a gt 7 vr mode.

They seemingly have made little effort to support it beyond paying Capcom to make re games in VR or a second party studio to make firewall which was mismanaged.

I'm a day 1 psvr2 user and the only thing I'm excited for right now is PC support.

I commented recently this bespoke VR game development model we have right now clearly doesn't work

crazyCoconuts39d ago

On the one hand I feel like there's been plenty of smaller non-AAA games to play and occupy me as a supplement to my flat screen gaming.
But I agree that Sony has done nothing to elevate this beyond the niche it's in and into the mainstream where it would be economical to create AAA games for it.

Babadook738d ago (Edited 38d ago )

Most of these games are worth owning for most people; I own all but 2 of them in fact. So I agree with kevco33. I think you're crazy if you downplay this list quite frankly. Sony can't keep funding software if people don't buy any of it, the ball is squarely in OUR court.

Sony has spent a lot on 3rd party stuff this gen like RE.

phoenixwing39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

Saving up for the headset is my first hurdle. Let alone buying games I don't want lol

mudakoshaka38d ago

People downvoting you for not having enough finances...what a world we live in, haha

phoenixwing38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

@mudako
They feel affronted at the very thought that I don't plunk down 500 immediately lol I have a little over 900 games in my backlog I've been buying games instead of hardware ever since I got my PC and ps5. I just don't know if vr is really for me honestly. Every time I have a couple hundred allocated to video games it makes more sense to buy a bunch of flat games instead of vr ones

mudakoshaka39d ago

I have 9 out of these 10 games. I try to buy all the VR games I like to support the advancement of VR!

TheEroica38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

I spoke with my wallet after watching the first headset get weak support. Easy pass until Sony earns my money. Feel bad for those who parted with 500 bucks, falling for the hype that Sony was actually gonna support this thing.

I own 7 of these titles off the list, lol.

NotoriousWhiz39d ago

I'm trying to decide if it's worth holding onto my psvr 2. I enjoy what it has currently, but it seems unlikely to get anything else. Might be better off just waiting for something with more support if that ever comes.

Profchaos38d ago

As a fellow psvr2 owner the question seemingly comes down to do you own a PC.

I think I'm all in I have a habit to hold onto my systems anyhow I still have my psvr1 to hell I still have my NES.

But while it's still worth something yeah you could sell it and if Sony turns the ship around you should be able to buy another one for less than you soldmit for I feel like we won't see any fix for the headset for the next 2 years rumours show that Sony has no current first party VR games in active development after they closed London studios

The whole psvr2 situation has left me feeling a little burnt on PlayStation as a whole to be honest. The first psvr felt experimental but it was supported far more than this superior headset

MIDGETonSTILTS1739d ago

GT7 surprised me, because I hate racing games, but i poured 100 hours into it way too quickly.

I’m looking forward to the Metro VR game this year, and I hope that WW2 dogfighter game releases eventually.

talocaca39d ago

I have most of them 😅

Waiting for a sale on Synapse and Arizona Sunshine 2.....also Metro coming this year looks great.
