On pin-up art, Dead or Alive, and why it's not objectification

Digitally Downloaded writes: "The continuing saga of Dead or Alive Xtreme 3, and many other Japanese games that share a similar fascination with the female form, is interesting in itself, and worthy of continued discussion and analysis. Is a game like Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 exploitation or harmless entertainment? Is it problematic or progressive? Few games have managed to inspire such an aggressive debate (from all sides) as this one has, and in many respects that whole series has become the poster-child for games that make heavy use of sexuality as a core theme (for better or for worse)."

Just a heads up those pictures of Miku and Rise are pretty out there since they're both suppose to be 16.

MattS3026d ago (Edited 3026d ago )

Completely irrelevant to the article.

And not true anyway. Miku can be whatever age you want her to be. That's the point. She's a canvas. People draw her at all kinds of ages. Her age is fluid even in the "official" art designs for her; Miku's western (English) voice bank has a different character design, and in that one she looks like she'd be around 20.

Risette, in Persona 4 Dancing All Night, doesn't have a stated age. At the very least she's 17, since it takes place at least a year after the start of Persona 4, where she was 16. She's clearly aged from that game. 18 is more likely.

Kalebninja3026d ago

I don't follow persona but its wiki said she was 15-16, though for Miku go look it up absolutely everything says she's 16.

DivineAssault 3026d ago

In japan, 15 year olds are legal.. Completely different culture

Kalebninja3026d ago (Edited 3026d ago )

They were drawn by some woman in Illinois.

Yui_Suzumiya3026d ago

16 is the most common legal age of consent. Canada, UK and 30 states in the U.S.

DivineAssault 3025d ago

@ Tiqila, even lower than i thought lol.. I stand corrected.. Still, theres cultural differences which is why its normal for the younger women to be sexualized..

rainslacker3025d ago

Pretty sure since these pics aren't depicting sexual acts, the age of consent isn't an issue. Even in the US, I believe if they're 13 or older, they can be shown dressed provocatively so long as it's not nude or partially nude....and those pictures aren't considered partially nude by legal measures. Kind of like how it's illegal to do porn with someone under 18, but the age of consent in most states is 16.

Generally, younger models aren't dressed provocatively due to the backlash it receives....like whatever that clothing company that did it with young models a while ago was....forget the name.

DivineAssault 3025d ago

I just hope there arent any grown adult men putting up sexualized posters of girls that are supposedly underage.. Video game or not, thats chester (child molester) status imo..

That was a good article. A lot better then others I've read recently.

I've always thought that having a fully realized character who is also sexy/attractive does not necessarily mean she's being objectified/exploited.

The artist lady in the article has a much better definition then me, lol.

I also had a look at the article linked to it comparing MKX and DOA5 , both being games with extreme content presented in a satirical manner, and why people treat violence and sex differently. Another good article that got me thinking.

Over the years I've done truly awful things in videogames, like mass genocide, theft, extortion, murder, human sacrifice etc, things I would never do in the reality, - and non of that has had a negative affect on me, or anyone else I know in the real world.
In which case why would a bouncy ninja lady in a bikini be so 'detrimental to myself and society', lol. I don't see it.

MattS3026d ago

Yep, exactly. In fact, when people start complaining about "sex" in games, I worry for them. That they are okay with the most horrific violence imaginable, but draw the line at a bikini, is a sign that they personally have a very significant problem with sex. And those are the kind of people you don't want hanging around your kids. Those are the kind of people that should never be allowed to go near a beach. Because those see "sex appeal" everywhere, and are threatened by it, because it stirs reactions in *them* that they lack the ability to handle.

Nothing titillates me about Dead or Alive. It's sexy, but in a satirical, fun sense. It's entertainment, not pornography. I'm the one looking at it from a healthy perspective. If another person looks at it and thinks that it's an attempt at titillation (and the only reason they could object to it is if that is how they see it), then they are the actual perverts here.

The actual content in many (not all, but many) examples of "sexy" games is fine. It's the general conservatism and immaturity in the community itself that the problem lies. It's time we called a spade a spade.

Couch co-op is the best alternative.

Resistance 2 co-op was amazing! I wish they would remaster resistance 1-3 and killzone 1-3 for the PS5.

I have a friend who still has a sealed copy of Folklore. I’m sure it’s worth more now than it was when it released but I’m not sure how much more.

Bought it for $5 at Walmart. I have yet to play it. But I did open it to look at it. Heh.

phoenixwing1127d ago

the game is actually good. I'd rather buy and play it than keep a sealed copy

Indigon1127d ago

Yeah I gave my brother my PS3 for free with a lot of games but I kept Folklore.

Teflon021127d ago

Folklore is an amazing game. Should have bought 2 copies. 1 to play and one to keep

Seraphim1127d ago

yeah I still have a sealed copy of Folklore too. I almost never do this but I had originally rented it. One day I saw it for like $20 at Walmart so picked up a copy. Always meant to re-play it but just never did. I think in part because it never got trophy support[?]. It was an interesting and unique game that didn't get the love it deserved.

I see Trails of Cold Steel II is tagged. Not sure where PS3 prices sit but the PS4 version of both Trails I and II were around $140 as recently as a little over a month ago. Ended up buying both of them digitally then buying III and IV on disc. Shame I kept putting off buying them. Just a couple months prior you could still get them both for about $45 each. Anyway I'm almost finished with II and hopefully be playing III and IV next.

Petebloodyonion1127d ago

I would suggest using price charting to evaluate the value of a past game.
https://www.pricecharting.c...
value for the game new is 60$

Hawk1986661127d ago

Its not worth much, about £20.

monkey6021126d ago

I want Folklore. I've been trying to find it for some time now. It's one of the only games set in Ireland so I've been busting to play it some time

And wait for emulation and/or till their PS3 dies?

franwex1127d ago

3D Dot Game Heroes is a cool game that may soon go up in price too. I enjoyed it.

Indigon1127d ago

That's one that has been quite hard to find for some time.

Godmars2901127d ago (Edited 1127d ago )

At least you didn't own ALL Panzer Dragoon entries only to sell them all on ebay.

Don't talk to me about seller's regret...

nommers1127d ago

I'm so glad I kept my copy of this game.

Soy1127d ago

Great game, lots of fun - and definitely tougher to find. I'm glad I kept mine.

Glad I still have it. One of my fav games that gen

PS1, PS2 and PS3 BC right now is pointless. The top games are extremely overpriced or aren't available anywhere anymore. The best that can happen is Sony putting all the games on the PSN and/or PS Now. That way we all can play the classics, with trophies and some optimizations.

Godmars2901127d ago

Pointless, unless you have a 2st stage production model PS3.

One have to get fixed, but still, I've got it.

gold_drake1127d ago

exvuse me
i still play games on my ps2.

Gardenia1127d ago

That's because you only think about yourself. 90% of gamers don't have PS1, PS2 or PS3 games lying around. What do think is going to happen when there is BC and games like Vagrant Story, MGS, Suikoden 2 will be on sale? The few that are will be sold for hundreds of Euro's/Dollars.

Digital is the only option for everyone to be able to play those games.

gold_drake1127d ago (Edited 1127d ago )

ooff yea im only thinking about myself by playing my ps2 games haha.
the whole point about my reply was that, BC is not pointless. alot of ppl still have their old games mind you.

HankHill1126d ago

Nobody agrees with you so I guess you're the one only thinking about themself.
