Star Wars Battlefront feels like a PS2 game, in the best way possible | Polygon

Yesterday the beta for Star Wars Battlefront dropped from orbit and began assaulting across three separate fronts — PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. Polygon had a chance to play on each platform overnight. So how goes the opening round for a title that EA expects to sell 9-10 million copies of? Here's some of our first impressions.

The game looks really good. Just from looking at the trailers I think that Dice have nailed the Star Wars atmosphere. It's a shame that it's multiplayer only. Can you imagine how awesome a story mode could've been?

I've just been playing the Beta and I would buy it in a heartbeat if it had a story mode. I really like the gameplay, I am just burned out on MP shooters. Even if they are Star Wars themed.

You can play single player waves and other modes. It was the first thing i tried out and was great fun. Piloting the ships will take a while to get used to but good fun.

Yeah, agreed! Played a couple of modes single player and MP with my brother and uninstalled afterwards.

Really basic gameplay and quite boring objectives.

It's OKAY. I just don't like how the empire is so OP and rebels are just weak. Empire has AT-AT and AT-ST's blowing everything up, rebels have nothing to balance that. So, when you're playing as the empire, you'll kill everybody! When you play as rebels, your whole team just dies over and over again. That aspect is lame. But it's fun to just stand back and watch, everything is beautiful and very Star Wars.

^that mode is balanced severely poorly. AT-AT's give ohk's out across the map, the rebels have to put up with support AT-ST's that get in even closer...and the 'leg tie' thing is a little trickier than most expected...

played about 10 rounds or so with a friend on that mode...was regularly going like 40 and 5 as imperial...then struggling to stay positive as a rebel...As rebel we never won a single round, even after players figured out it was very important to attack the AT-AT's at the specific windows...we got one on occasion, never both...but even then it was usually not even close...

i enjoyed it far more than i expected...but still worry that it doesn't have legs for me personally...I think i'd be pretty bored in a week or two...it truly is beyond gorgeous, and the balance will be adjusted...but...even though i appreciate DICE finally making a relatively bloat free game...something just doesn't feel like a full retail product in the same way that hardline didn't...HL IS a full on BF4 mod, so maybe that is why i laughed at it...and this at least is its own entity...

so HL should've been $20 and this...$40, maybe? $60 though i'm just not seeing it so far...

Exactly. Today will be the true test. It ran flawlessly for me last night in full 40 man games of Walker Assault. But i'm interested to see how it holds up with millions of people playing.

It's been hit and miss for me, literally. Played quite a few matches earlier in full lobbies. There were more than a few times I unloaded into guys (including multiple headshots) without killing them only for them to turn around and one shot me. Infuriating when it happens. That's on a stable 120mb connection. It's far from a lagfest though. Overall connection seems pretty good considering the servers are probably getting hammered now.

See our broadband having issues with its exchange and bt are transferring everyone to new servers over coming weeks as such I have speeds as low as 2mbs yet the game was playing pretty much flawlessly for me...

I played allot of the beta on PS4 & its not for me. I will be bored very quickly, just felt like a Battlefield mod to me. One thing I did notice, the Xbox one version I also played has terrible judder, due to framerate issues. Now I'm on the new dash, so it may be that, but it was nowhere near as smooth as the PS4 version. Meanwhile the PC origin version is the clearest & best by far, but after my run on it I don't think I'll bother.

Man with the Star Wars lore EA missed an opportunity with an awesome single player campaign. Maybe they just didnt trust in DICE storytelling. Also has me worried that some of you guys dont think its has a lasting appeal. I'll give it a go but my hype meter is slowly going down.

Also EA has several teams currently making Star Wars titles, ie Bioware and Visceral. The Star Wars Battlefront 1 and 2 single players where jokes bud...they where nothing like something like KOTOR or even The Force Unleashed.

As to why anyone thought this game would have such a single player in such an epic scale is beyond me as neither of the first 2 had great single players, they were just missions with bots on MP levels...mind you...that is what THIS GAME IS DOING LMFAO! So your asking for a single player of a series that never had a quality one?

Sooo I'm not really sure many of you REALLY remember what those single players had in them LOL! Story? You...you mean narration and MP mission objectives with bots?

Let me remind many on here, Battlefront 1 came out in 2004.....

Half Life 2, Doom 3 and Metal Gear Solid 3 came out in 2004

Battlefront 2 came out in 2005.....

F.E.A.R, Call Of Duty 2 and Resident Evil 4 also come out in 2005.

Soooo are some of you 100% sure that both Battlefront games just had amazing single players? Even in 2004 and 2005....bots in multiplayer maps with some narration was not some huge amazing feat.

I'm gonna say it again and again until i probably get bored of saying it, but DICE missed a beat on this one by not expanding on the Galactic conquest mode that was in SWB2, add narrative options that tie in with the movies, base building on planets, upgrading troops, modifying your vehicles etc.

I'm sure DICE will add in the first 3 episodes.. as DLC :/

@_-EDMIX-_ it's important to note that it's been almost 10 years since the release of SWB2-DICE are good at making large open battlefields (get it) that consist of a huge amount of action happening all over the map, unlike most games; For a reboot of any series i expect similar elements, but you really need to push the envelope and create something new at the same time, many other games have done this with reboots- Deus Ex HR being chief among them.

As i mentioned before though, it's lacking in depth- and the "singleplayer" in the game is something i'd expect from a game that was made 10 years ago with a budget of 5 million, not one with about ten times that- but you know, dlc will solve that problem right ;)

They expect 9-10 million sales in the first quarter, so all i can say is good luck; they#ll probably do it just because the Star wars brand is being used though..

So having watched a lot of gameplay I think it's safe to say that for the competitive gamer this game is going to be a bust. I'm downloading the beta now so I can tell for myself, but with the auto aim being as it is, the game is going to be an arcade shooter about cooldowns rather than an experience like battlefield or the older battlefronts.

I was very excited about this game once it was announced especially with DICE at the helm. Now after seeing it in action I don't even think I'll be picking it up on release.

Been playing since yesterday on PC and i love it. Im a huge battlefield fan but this feels very different to me. The weapons and pace of play are a lot different than BF3/4. to me this feels like star wars and not anything else. if people say this is battlefield then they must not play many shooters at all i think or just dont get into them much. i think most people that have played battlefield for hundreds to near thousand hours can see the difference when they play

Yeah, even as someone who has only played a little of BF3/4 (I played the older ones a lot more) I could tell the difference immediately. It feels really nice though. Just not sure if it is a purchase for me as I feel I will grow tired of it within a month and not go back to it.

The co-op is fun though. I like the way you can play it in splitscreen.

Battlefront 1 and 2 didn't have "story mode" as much as they had some narration and missions with bots in multiplayer maps and objectives, how do you know that Star Wars BF is not JUST THAT EXACTLY?

To Pandemic, a "story" was that narration and those objectives, this game could very will just have those bud so not really sure what you mean as that is NOTHING like Titan Fall.

Yeah so people can spend £40 on a 6 hour long campaign and have 0 REPLAY ABILITY... This way of thinking is pure stupid. You want both that are good not just one unless that mode is particularly well done, MP only is fine if the game is content full and has great gameplay, same with a SP game.

It's also being completely rebooted by a different team and they really want to do their own thing and not copy a 10 year old game where shooters played by completely different rules. From what I'm playing currently in the beta, this game easily kills BF1 and 2 in terms of feel and in terms of over all quality for its time.

BF1 and BF2 where NOT NEAR the quality of Halo 2, Half Life 2, Doom 3 etc, mind you, those titles came out around the time BF1 and 2 released.

Star Wars BF THIS YEAR easily one of the best FPS/TPS this year, period. It feels amazing and it deserves the top spot.

This game is not only up to today's standards, it competeing with the best titles this year.

BF1 nor BF2 came NEAR the titles released in 2004 and 2005...

I mean...for some to be as stupid as counting features as suppose to actual quality....sad.

There is a reason why DICE got handed this title and NOT Pandemic. There is reason why clearly they didn't make a 3rd game and a reason why Battlefield as series is STILL OUT and as successful as it is.

@Joak, why should they continue to have features that likely hurt both those games? I mean...there is reason why BF1 and BF2 didn't do huge numbers and why BF3 was cancelled and why the Battlefield series still exist today.

They have their reasons and I just put 3 hours straight in the beta and its AWESOME! They made the correct call and its now a day 1 for me.

Bad Company didn't have prone due to how it was abused in the previous BF titles ,when added back, they made a slight delay as to restrict the speed of prone and make it a risk reward type deal.

They might add prone back if they find a way to make it not be abused, but because of all the rocky terrain, I can see why they kept prone out.

I mean...you can cry all day and nit pick over features, they just sold me in mere seconds of playing it as it feels amazing ,responsive ,sounds fantastic, single player is really fun, multiplayer is really fun and I'm now getting it day 1. I was holding off until next year as this year I already have 3 titles pre-ordered for fall, now this makes 4.

Bad Company took a lot of things out, added other features in and in BFBC2....they made one of the best MP shooters I've EVER played, I put well over 2000 hours in that BF game mind you...I was very much against some of the changes....clearly after playing it as suppose to BEGGING like CHILD for old features, I came to realize I don't make the series.....THEY DO, clearly they had great reason to remove those features for that series in general due to the terrain, campers and the abuse it might get in gameplay, mind you..I would have missed on of the best BFs just based on begging for old features. I'm fine with the changes DICE made to this game too, sorry bud, its not those other Battlefronts...but those other Battlefronts where not just some spectacular perfect works of art. You have to grow up and come to realize that clearly something was wrong with those games if they didn't sell and got cancelled and the company that owns the Star Wars IP ...DIDN'T go to Pandemic. No Classes(Medic, Engineer, Support, Recon etc.)

No Combat Roll or Prone

Unlimited Ammo

No Secondary Weapons

Vehicles are battle pickups( they are no even in the map,so when you activate this you just transition into the vehicle, this is so fucking lazy ) so when you get inside one of them and your are about to die, you CANT JUMP OFF!! your fucked, you will die eventually

You can regen full health in less than a second (bad thing because if you are fighting someone and he is about to die and you run up to him but by time you get there he will already have full health)

All this was changed or removed from the original Battlefront series.

this game is so generic it encourages players to run around like headless chickens by giving everyone a jetpack, unlimited ammo and regen health.
This game is on par with cod black ops 3

Don't forget how huge the HUD icons are, the boost meter takes up the bottom half of the screen. The GUI itself even going into the main menu is giant boxes that take up the whole screen.

I can tell from this point theres only going to be a small handful of heroes to play as given the fact they've only announced 3 in 6 months, I expect 5 or 6 total.

Facial models belong in a PS2 game ironically. They don't move and are completely static textures.

Balance on Hoth means Rebels have to focus on AT-ATs, capturing uplinks, shooting tie fighters, AT-STs, and the infantry itself. Imperials only focus is to shoot at infantry, shoot at X-wings, and defend the uplinks. You automatically lose every match on Rebels unless you have a comptent team, but good luck finding compentecy in its playerbase.

Looking at previews I expected Battlefield: Star wars, what I got was just some blender mix of CoD and Battlefield with a star wars skin.

When the survey popped at the menu asking me to rate it I gave it a median score, than it wanted me to select 3 reasons why I gave it a bad score. My choices were, Low Replay Value, Game is too similar to other FPS games, and Vehicle gameplay does not feel authentic. (Because authentic to them means auto lock trailing in flight and getting out of any ground vehicle destroys it instantly)

Now I've played the Battlfront beta... I want to actually turn on my ps2 and play battlefront.

As nice as this game is it aint battlefront.

Shouldn't be unlocks. Should be choose your character class and play with that weapon set.

I also prefered the domination style and being able to choose your spawn points along with the limited number of team respawns.

I think I would actually prefere a Battlefront 2 "remaster" with the EA visuals and sound....

No and yes. Me and my team has beaten the Empire 5 times in a roll. They got some teammate who would just rather get as many kills as possible instead of activating the links. Get a team that knows what they are doing.

They actually aren't at all it's the Rebels that don't know the mode properly, you have to attack as defenders which is why they lose all the time. And even then they have to attack the AT-AT when the Y-wings drop the shields, which NO ONE does because they don't understand the mode, also the Snowspeeders can bring down the AT-AT in one cable and once again people don't know that or do it.

Absolutely brilliant atmosphere, the sound effects are stunning and really set a good mood but I am already bored of the game after a few hours and while more maps and game modes on launch will make up for that a bit..I just don't see myself playing this much when so many other great games are coming out and I still have MGSV and The Witcher to beat and got the Uncharted Collection coming in the mail soon. A decent enough game, overall...just clearly not up to the expectations that I had and that is a shame :(

I've had a blast playing it, fantastic gameplay, feels like an epic star wars battle. I'll definitely be buying the game. It's not perfect however I feel it's battlefield re-skinned (albeit very well done) regardless of what the developers say, isn't going to be a game I'll play non-stop, but still good enough to keep going back to for some star wars fun with friends.

Runs fantastically on my PC, not once dropping below 60fps. I downloaded the X1 version too and I'm sorry to say it, but it's absolutely awful, the 720p resolution is more than noticeable and frames dropping all over the place.. kinda weird when my buddy can run it smoothly on mid-tier gaming laptop (less capable than the X1) at 1080p low settings.

Always when I jump in and play multiplay Battlefield and now this Star Wars beta Battlefront, I get killed almost instantly. I have no sense of where I am coming from and where I am going to and then I just get shot. Then I respawn somewhere else and have no clue what is going on all over again. I wish there was a story mode or just a co-op mode against the computer like I use to play GRAW2.. wow how I LOVED that game!

Its not Battlefield at all... or Battlefront. Power ups are lame - give it to me in a class kit or GTFO. Also - building an objective around ATAT's and not allowing Snowspeeders to have tow cables is broken as f**. Randomized vehicle pickups are dumb - let us just opt to have pilots dedicated to the match, or put them back in the hangers where we can hop in. Crap or get off of the pot. As it stands there is a kernal of a brilliant open field shooter here, but the gameplay is unbalanced and utterly broken.

At first I felt that it looked good and had good control and such but was a little different than I'm used to then after a few ranks I started getting into it. Now i'm kicking ass and realise its sooooooo much fun. Its fast, crazy,and dayum the walker battle is something. The drop pod mode can get super fast with everyone jetpacking around and its really different once you get used to the game.

Dice did make it different otherwise I would have felt the Battlefield controls. It feels fresh and is sooo Star Warsy in many levels of detail. Very well made game.

No matter what system your are playing on. This game is boring. Drop zone- run to the pod and die by the pod. At-At. This could have been so much better but instead you have one team trying to take down At's which you made so hard just to keep the game going. Then the other team playing team death match. That's to big of a objective for this type of game

The only thing this game has going for it is the Starwars name. People will buy it for the name alone. Take it home, find out there is no campaign and it'll be Titan fall all over again. I for one am out! Spending my $60 on fallout or tomb raider instead.
