Why the success of PewDiePie is good for anyone trying to make a living in the gaming media, like him or not.
People need to learn the difference between "dislike" and "hating". They are not interchangeable.
I honestly think he would be a cool friend. I just find him annoying in his youtube videos.
He plays a persona which is catered to his audience of 10-14 year olds. Probably a chill guy in real life, he has put in the work to get where he is, but his persona is incredibly annoying after a bit.
I also feel like most Hate his content and not him as a person. At least, that's how I feel. It's predictably loud and obnoxious and I don't think and of what he says or does is the least bit entertaining.
Exactly this. I don't hate on PewDiePie in the sense that I go out of my way to leave nasty remarks/comments on his videos because I simply don't watch them. If someone asks me what I think, I'll let them know. That being said, his content doesn't appeal to me as I find his mannerisms annoying. On the other had, regardless of what I or anyone else thinks, you can't knock the hustle. The man found a way to turn his particular brand of humor into something extremely lucrative. I can respect that.
Exactly. People have taken this term "hating" to a level it was never meant to be. I told my brother the other day that I don't like Nikki Minaj. I don't listen to her music. He said to me quit "hating", you just mad she get badder girls than you........... WTF!!!! I don't care how many chicks she gets or what she does. I just don't care to listen to her. She's getting her money though, so I have no problem with that. Dislike. Now if I had said... Nikki aint all that. I can rap better than her and I get badder chicks. Now that would be Hating. Atleast that is how I see it.
* I don't hate Pew Die Pie the person, I just very much dislike his youtube persona.
I'm I the only who see that these youtubers looking died inside? you look into their eyes and they seem empty, like they realized what they chose as a career path.
You need Jesus. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven. PewDiePie is a very funny guy and he makes amazing videos and I know he is NOT empty. He is always very calm and always very entertaining in all his videos.
Why? The guy makes bank and has a very large presence, anytime he wanted to he could quit and join any other company as a social corespondent or something like that.
@xboxonex I 'm not judging just observing their behavior and I don't need Jesus @hammadthebeast I'm not only just talking about pewdiepie, these letsplayers look like they're fakes.
SO playing games for a living and making millions is a bad choice? Um ok.
I find him annoying but I don't hate him.
Same. I am a big Kinda Funny fan but I never watch Alfredo Plays either. I just don't find it that interesting personally.
He's irritating and not at all funny or fun to watch. And he succeeds for it. That's why I hate him.
Tell that to those +30,000,000 people who are subscribed to him
Yeah well mankind is doomed to do stupid, stupid things. There are a TON of truly talented people on Youtube who deserve this kind of success but, nope, HE gets a freaking South Park episode for being an idiot. Tommy Wiseau voice: "I'm fed up with this worreld!"
That's how many idiots their are in this world....and that alone is scary
awww little honeybee thinks his opinion matters. Grow up, you hate someone because they suceeded more in life than you ever be.
That logic makes no sense. I don't dislike everyone that makes more money than me. Far from it. That would be almost everyone I know. I dislike the ones that I think don't deserve it, and whether you disagree or not, I don't personally think he deserves the popularity and (more importantly) income that he gets. His videos are the worst kind of pandering schlock on youtube. There is no cleverness or creativity involved with anything he does. It is literally just a grown man screaming obscenities at a screen. I won't say I HATE the man, but I certainly think he plays into a very, very backwards system.
That's funny because look at all the singers, actors, presenters, comedians who we all love and enjoy watching. Nobody hates on them for being successful.
According to your wonderful logic, we need to praise Justin Bieber and Kardashians too.
Honeybee? I'm a Red Wizard of Thay thank you very much.
But he is funny to watch for 10-14 year olds, his main audience.
It's not that I hate him, it's that I hate how much he gets payed for playing games and screaming into his mic like a 5 year old. Don't get me wrong, if I could get payed that much for doing so little I would do it. PewDiePie got lucky though because he started when Youtube was still a rising media device.
Well, a lot of people got lucky doing lots of things that might seem simple to do. You can say that for quite a few things. At the end of the day though, how likely is it that someone persists that long and has the personality that happens to appeal to that many youtube viewers ? Whatever he did, clearly he did it right.
I find it helpful when people post walkthroughs or stream some gameplay... I find it insane people are making so much off it and a little weird that someone this annoying can rise to the tape but thats how it works... someone is willing to watch.
Besides the fact of his voice and laugh getting annoying after awhile.. he's cool.. he content started to bore me, as well other youtubers.. but he is doing his thing
I don't hate him. I don't even really dislike him. I just don't care for his work. I don't care if he makes a lot of money for it, because if he has an audience, then so be it. There are plenty of shows on TV that are quite popular, but cater to the lowest common denominator, but it doesn't affect my life as far as I know. He's not even the lowest common denominator, just that people do find his brand of humor entertaining.
I'm not a fan of his work, but I do realize that if he has managed to get this huge following and all these views, he must be doing something right. There's no reason to hate him, he saw an opportunity and took it. And if you don't agree with the idea of someone making millions by playing video games, don't blame him, blame his viewers.
I don't hate him. I just find his YouTube persona very annoying and thus don't watch anything he makes.
What annoys me is these people get payed more than the people who created the game, then get all angry and self-righteous when the publisher wants a cut for using their content (which is COPYRIGHTED after all!)
Does anyone here really believe that Pewdiepie acts the same way in real life the way he does in his videos? Hating him for knowing his audience and acting the way he does in his videos shouldn't be the same as hating him as a person, especially when you know nothing about his personal life.
False, there is 1 reason to hate him. His act of donating to charity is all about giving himself a high moral ground. He admitted to this on his twitter a while ago and immediately people called him out saying how screwed up that was. He then deleted the tweet a few minutes after. So his whole caring and niceness is only done because he essentially pays for a good reputation. This is not a theory or some paranoid assumption, this is an event that did occur.
"There is zero reason to hate him" You know besides the fact that he isn't funny, does zero work for all that money, screams at literally everything, says the most inappropriate crap, is a complete ***hole in real life, and is bragging about his money and how popular he is. He is literally the most annoying person in the world and has ZERO REASON to be as popular as he is or making as much money as he does. The only reason why he is popular is because the fact he got lucky and started his videos when let's plays were really picking up popularity. He even stated when he is pretending he doesn't understand why people hate him that he had more fun while working at a hotdog stand. He doesn't even enjoy making his videos and certainly doesn't deserve making probably 10 times what the developers of the games he plays makes.....they work hard and don't get that much but he hits record and screams and gets handed money.
^^^^ THIS Oh I'm sorry that wasn't the proper response "Well...Well YOU'RE JUST JELLY....why don't you go and sit in your jelly castle with your jelly subjects and jelly food" /s
It is weird to focus on hating him. There are more pressing problems in the world to lose your mind about.
Pointing out how someone is unlikeable doesn't take that long. You make it sound people spend days focused on hating him for no reason. It probably took him a minute to write that.
I don't focus on hating on him, I simply don't watch but don't say there is no reason to hate him because there is and the fact he thinks it's just about the money he makes is hilarious and shows he's either stupid or has such an ego problem that he just pins it on that.
dude you are on a videogame news site, isn't there more pressing news than games... That is such a BS argument, there will almost always be a more serious matter than the one you are currently talking about. that argument is horrible logic. Just the fact that you are here making that comment is a contradiction to your own belief since you should be out saving the hungry, poor, abused, victims of the world.
@Foxtrot He obviously put a lot of thought into it and took his time to analyze the behavior of pewdiepie, read articles about him and his twitter posts and follow news about him. That's kinda a waste of a lot of time on a person he dislikes. @Summons, no there is no reason to hate on him. I don't like his videos either, tastes differ. Even if he does it for money, at least he's openly admitting it. He's like every other businessman, doing what it takes to get people's money. There's no reason to single him out in a mass of thousands. @Gh05t Yeah there will always be something pressing, but go focus your attention on Palestinian children, the genocide issue in Bosnia, the crisis of Greece, loosing your mind over such things is at least socially acceptable. And your ability to understand what someone wrote is horrible. I said there are more pressing problems to lose your mind about, I'm not losing my mind about this though. And don't call people out if you can't say anything about their personality. I'm already engaged in helping others.
People have deemed that those who provide entertainment to a large audience should get paid more than the people who put in all the work behind the scenes. This is why celebrities get paid 10's of millions, because society believes they are that valuable. PDP uses Nickelodeon humor and small children are more entertained by random screaming and overeacting then a well thought out joke or story. That's just something they'll eventually grow out of. He basically found a loophole in the copyright rules and exploited it and now we have all these publishers coming down hard trying to plug it because of people like PDP, Markiplier, etc. So even if you wanted to do that thing it's next to impossible now with all the rules and the fact that his children will just bash you for being a ripoff.
Did you watch this already? https://www.youtube.com/wat... You do realize you are forcing your own opinion as fact. "that fact that he isn't funny" Subjective to sense of humour, just because you don't find it funny doesn't make it fact. "does zero work for all that money" "ZERO REASON to be as popular as he is" "the fact he got lucky" Please don't be that biased, he maintained a persona for a long time, that takes a lot dedication, building a community and his own brand. Consistently interacting with his fans through social media. He also has to edit his videos which takes time and effort to do. Yes he certainly got lucky, but not without some degree of effort and dedication to his channel. "screams at literally every everything" Pretty much accurate I'll give you that. "is a complete ***hole in real life" So I assume you know him well enough in real life to judge him as an "***hole?" I find that hard to believe when he donated to charity and interacts well with other youtubers and fans. You want an ***hole look at Justin Bieber. "He doesn't even enjoy making his videos" So you know him well enough to know he doesn't enjoy it. Using common sense, if you don't enjoy your career, you won't be in your career for long. Yet Pewdiepie has been making videos for over 5 years, so he doesn't enjoy making videos for 5 years and yet he's successful? I laugh at your comment. "Certainly doesn't deserve making probably 10 times what the developers of the games he plays makes" So it goes for a lot of other youtubers as well, might as well put up the same argument for a lot of entertainers in general. Sadly, this is the real world and isn't always "fair". There is reason to hate Pewdiepie's content, but you're just scraping if you want to hate him as a person.
Considering my above comment about him admitting to only donating to charity so he can attain a high moral ground to stand on, his twitter posts, his comment history outside of his channel, and his general attitude. I would definitely say that we have a dutch Cliffy B. only without a coding talent and work experience in the game industry.
@Rachel_Alucard Never heard about the twitter thing and I find it hard to believe when there isn't any evidence, or whether you are really interpreting it as the truth. There should be more controversy if he tweeted something like that. Regardless, charity is a commendable action and he should have the right to brag about it if he did it. Doesn't matter whatever his intentions were for donating because we would never know. It's a smart way of attracting positivity and many youtubers do it. I like how there is a disagree just because I'm calling out on Summons75's bullshit.
That's because all the obvious evidence was deleted immediately and everyone stopped talking about it a day later. The point of it was that it paints a picture that he will only do something if he gets something out of it, in which case a charity is supposed to be an act of good out of your heart, not a reputation booster like you are using atm.
@Rachel_Alucard You're wrong, charity is an action of providing towards the community regardless of intention. Basically what you're saying is he shouldn't be donating to charity just because he has the "wrong" intention. Yes, he shouldn't be helping disadvantaged people in need just because it is not "an act of good out of your heart" Why is he not allowed to use it as a tool for positive publicity? Other youtubers, actors, musicians, corporations, governments etc. do it for the same purpose, they just don't say it. Your idea that it's only "supposed to be an act of good out of your heart" is not true at all.
Because it's wrong, just because other people do it doesn't make it ok. They don't say it because they know it's wrong. Why do you think people lamblasted him when he admitted to it? It's a simple case of "It's ok take advantage of others as long as you don't say anything about it." Also, I don't want anyone to hate the guy. But damned, the reasons for his success all come down to exploitation and loopholes and people think it was just luck or something about his personality that got him to where he is.
@Rachel_Alucard I said before, the intention for charity does not matter because we would never truly know. Perhaps its a mixture of selfless and "selfish" motivation. Call it exploitation, call it taking advantage. A lot of entertainers provide charity partly because of what they gain from it. I don't see wrong in it as long as it helps the people in need. Whatever Pewdiepie tweeted (if it did exist) is the honest truth of charity by most famous groups or people, judging from his personality I'm sure he does it partially for the "right" reasons as well. https://www.youtube.com/wat... Look at 1:00 I prove my point, he didn't cash in on the ice bucket challenge and focused on what mattered, that shows he does it for the "right" reasons as well. That's it, I don't see much reason in hating the guy because he's not a blatant ***hole like Justin Bieber but go ahead and do what you want to cause its the internet. Good day.
Haters gonna hate
I can think of one: I find him incredibly obnoxious and irritating. I give him credit for being a part of the start of Let's Play and those types of videos in the infancy of YouTube, I wish I had done it. But that doesn't mean I have to like him.
Gotta love all the people riding on the hate he gets by saying there's no reason to hate him, lol. Avoiding is easy but i can't seem to avoid this topic.
I hope devs & Sony & Microsoft & co eventually follow Nintendo here. After they see how much these people are making off of work not made by them
Taste's differ, some like guys like PDP and Markiplier other's don't. However I sure hope those companies don't do it. I myself couldn't afford a console while I was in school and the only way to enjoy video games was watching someone else play them. There's a lot of kids like that who don't have the finances to play modern games. I myself don't like the screaming and stuff. My favorite was, and still is Cryaotic. He's silent, only talks when needed, his jokes actually make sense, but he doesn't gain attention. If companies follow Nintendo, small guys like him who are of better quality than the big ones won't survive.
Why don't you get real friends and watch them play. This is what Letplays YouTubers are killing hanging out with real friends in front of a TV passing the controller when someone dies in a game. That's how I do it with my friends.
Because young people in poor countries have difficulties spending hundreds of dollars on consoles in general. I watched Let's plays with my friends. If the average income per person is 200 dollars, it's difficult for most people to buy a console with that.
I will never see the appeal of a full grown man acting childish with unatural facial reactions and pretending to be "Scared" or "Excited". Even though PewDiePie is pretty horrible to watch... I even think Markiplier and that JackSepticEye dude is even worse.
Jacksepticeye is not a bad or fake guy at all. I watched him back when he had less than 100k subs and he continues to stay humble and thank his fans. Watched his channel specifically for the oculus rift stuff, but now a days he hasnt touched it in so long
For me to hate him I would have to care about him wich I don't.
My favourite youtuber by far is boogie2988, don't care for pewdiepie at all.
Gotta say, this dude brings on my hemorrhoids. Yeah, hate is the appropriate word.
Nope, this guy is still a chode.
I don't watch his videos, i don't like him and i don't hate him, but i have to admit at some point i've watched the whole Dark Souls series.
He makes money just by playing game. I get paid to make them. He gets paid more money just to play them than I get to make them. 7+ mil dollar (in 2014) > ~90,000(in a good year) He is rehashing other people work. I don't mind other YouTubers like NigaHiga, RocketJump, RayWilliamJohnson or DigitalCorridor making lots of money because they actually do alot of original work, playing video games is not.
Well he is his own boss nor does he work for any company (I suppose you do).
never heard of him until today; clicked on one of his videos and i just don't understand why 37 mil. people subscribed to the nonsense.
Because they have opinions?
37 million subscribe to his channel because "they have opinions"?? That makes no sense at all.
Like many others here, I don't watch his videos, but apparently a lot of people do. And good on him. He's created something that brings entertainment to so many. Whether it's an actor who plays pretend for a few hours and gets millions of dollars, or YouTube personality who does hours and hours worth of entertaining, the market has decided that he's worth it.
