Thousands of Fans Outraged About Metroid’s Direction They’re Petitioning to Get Them Cancelled

OXCGN:

Nintendo, in it’s E3 2015 Direct, showed off two Metroid games after having not released a title in the series since Metroid: Other M for the Wii in 2010. It should have been a glorious, beautiful return to form – bringing a fan favourite franchise back from the dead to give new life to Samus’s adventures through pirate infested space – but instead it was met with a Change.org petition to cancel the games.Do I agree with this reaction? Not necessarily, but I can definitely see where it’s coming from. What was once an isolating, terrifying and thought-provoking quest into deep space has been strapped on to a multiplayer shoot-em-up, and a 3v3 space soccer simulator. Of course, we’ve seen but a few seconds of each game, and it isn’t fair to completely write them off without first at least playing them – but let’s think about them for a second.

The hate is perfectly justified.

RocknRolla3253d ago

Agreed. Nintendo switched to digital events to stop problems and awkward moments, but this one just fell flat.

The hate is completely justified.

joab7773253d ago

If they revealed these alongside a new Metro I'd game, then
...well, no...not even then. It's like they are using the Metro I'd name to sell games. Could have called them something else entirely.

Utalkin2me3253d ago

I quit watching the Nintendo direct it was so bad. I was really disappointed in what they had to show. I had high hopes too.

DragonKnight3252d ago

Thank God for Axiom Verge then. Hope the guy that made it made good money off it and continues the series. If Nintendo won't make the Metroid game everyone wants, someone else will.

jholden32493252d ago

No it's not. People are morons if they think this is actually Nintendo's plans for the franchise.

It's just a little spin off game. We all know retro is working on a proper entry for Wii U. This is just a little stopgap game based in the Metroid Universe, like hey guys you like a metroid right? We'll have super missiles and beams and space world and it will feel nice and familiar to you.

Gosh darn people are idiots. Just enjoy the little side game they're giving us until the real one comes out. It's not like this is theif "big Metroid reveal". Once the proper game is ready they'll show it!

Not to mention this game actually looks fun!

Lightning Mr Bubbles3252d ago

I'm telling you, it's the end of days for Nintendo. Maybe

ShinMaster3252d ago (Edited 3252d ago )

Fans: "New Metroid game please"

Nintendo: "Here's a spin off. On 3DS. No Metroid gameplay mechanics, atmosphere or exploration. And no Samus Aran".

wtf

TheDivine3252d ago

Why waste time, money, and marketing on a side game nobody wants. The same dev could've easily made a 2d Metroid or whatever else. Nintendo doesn't have a clue and Iwata/Myamoto need to step down. Give Myamoto an office to make whatever he wants with zero input on other company functions and games.

They let killer ip's like Kid Icarus, Metroid, and The Last Story rot and pay to produce this garbage?

This isn't Metroid.

I don't see anyone talking about it here so I'll be the one to say it,Nintendo needs to ditch those stupid brain-washing amiibo toys, they are catering mostly to collectors and the kids,if they focused more on making their games better instead of focusing so much on these shitty amiibos then you would have gotten a great game focused event instead of a farce one riddled with these stupid toys on every freaking game.

Nintendo fans,it's YOUR fault that this event sucked, you jumped on the bandwagon that is "Amiibos" and look how it turned back to bite you in the ass,now Nintendo is giving up on resources in order to make these and stick them to every game possible on the freaking console.

it's like "hey, you want that awesome Link costume for your smash game,or want to have retro Mario invading your game, buy this Amiibo figure for 18 dollars or so and you'll get just that PLUS the figure! YAY :D"

When in reality they could have spared us that with a simple dlc ranging from 2 dollars to 5 dollars instead of forcing me to buy this stupid little figure to cash in on another 15 dollars.

The Amiibo shit needs to stop! :|

TheTwelve3252d ago

No company in their right minds would stop producing something that makes them so much money. Amiibos are here to stay but Nintendo should invest their money into better directions for the rest of us.

garrettbobbyferguson3252d ago

You realize that manufacturing toys and producing games are two separate entities and Nintendo has been doing this for ages, right?

Studio-YaMi3251d ago (Edited 3251d ago )

@garret
I never said that nintendo should stop making "toys",don't try to be a smartass,I was mainly talking about the "Amiibos" and how they are getting first priority over anything else.

SilentNegotiator3252d ago

More like, "fans gonna tell Nintendo what they actually want when they completely screw up and try to give them something that is no where near what they've been asking for for years".

Nintendo has disconnected too much with its fans and the industry as a whole. It's great that they're still doing their thing in the handheld market, but as far as their consoles have gone...it has been more misses than hits.

I thought Nintendo Digital Event this morning was pretty weak, but to announce two Medtroid titles that are basically just cashing in on the series name, I can understand why fans are pissed off. That doesn't warrant a petition to cancel a game, but still...

obener3253d ago

Yeah but we can't have everything we want in life, correct?

MrSwankSinatra3253d ago (Edited 3253d ago )

Half of those game we knew were coming for the past 2-3 years and the other half was full of crap no one asked for.

jholden32493252d ago (Edited 3252d ago )

And yet I bet your favorite games of all time were games you never asked for. It's their job to make games we never knew we wanted until we play, NOT to take orders like a table waitress. Because if there's one thing fans want, it's the SAME REGURGITATED CRAP OVER AND OVER. And then complain that they don't do anything new!

So tired of hearing people say this isn't what they asked for. You want somebody to take orders go to Denny's. If you want to play video games, let the men do what they do best and make fun games. Did anyone ASK a for Metroid Prime? Or Pikmin? Or Splatoon? And yet these are some of the greatest Nintendo games ever made.

So please could you at least try to not automatically dismiss the game just because it doesn't conform perfectly into the cookie-cutter image that you had in mind? I understand that this game will probably not live up to a main series entry. Ok, not probably, it WON'T. But then again I don't think it's supposed to! This is just a little side game they're giving us in the meantime. Should be happy they're paying attention to the franchise- this is good!

But you guys keep spazzing out every time they announce a Metroid game of any kind, or even games by known Prime developers just because it's not Metroid, and they might toss the franchise in the permanent trashcan. On the other hand if people acted like rational human beings and judged this game based on its merits once they learn more about it rather than panning the game after a 10 second preview, and maybe even act a little bit excited that Nintendo has not forgotten the franchise, perhaps Nintendo would be more inclined to tell us about that new mainline entry they have coming on the Wii U rather than scrapping it entirely.

Good grief...

fr0sty3253d ago

Sony seems to disagree...

jholden32493252d ago

Sony had a good conference. MS was better with the BC. But they actually announced very very little themselves. I saw two announcements by Sony worth their salt- Last Guardian and Horizon Zero Dawn. The rest of the credit goes to developers like Bethesda and Square Enix. And many of those games will not be releasing until 2017 to 2018.

MasterCornholio3252d ago

@j

I actually thought Sonys was better because of the games that were announced.

But that's just my opinion.

Paulino303252d ago

You're right, but don't give us that crap. Ain't nobody got time for that.

SilentNegotiator3252d ago

Yeah, kinda like how Nintendo can't have my money for this game.

Doge3253d ago

I'm pretty disappointed that it's not the Metroid game I expected to be announced. But a petition to cancel it? Get the hell outta here with that crap.

fr0sty3253d ago

Can't hate on them... money and resources are being diverted into these projects that could be spent making a proper Metroid game.

Doge3253d ago

We're talking about a rather large company here with a pretty large amount of cash and resources that can handle many projects simultaneously. Not an indie studio with like 3 people and a tiny budget.

fr0sty3252d ago

Doesn't matter... taking any budget or time away from a proper metroid game to make spinoffs only makes the real thing take longer or makes it lower quality. Nintendo's resources are finite, so even if they have a lot of them, the gamers want metroid yesterday.

I'm really starting to think these AAA games are getting development shifted to the NX so it can launch with big name games early on. that was a big mistake they made with wii u, rushed hardware out long before software was ready.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3252d ago

right a couple thousand yens fro 3DS game for Wii U game

LOL get out of here.

_-EDMIX-_3253d ago

The press event was pure trash. That isn't Metroid, its another game with the same name.

They seem to think they can just release anything and call it the same name and all is well.

Zelda Replay: Majora's Mask

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "Is Ocarina of Time as legendary as I remembered it? For the most part, yes. In spite of a handful of missteps — a few obtuse puzzles, some tedious backtracking, and a clunky stealth sequence — I don't believe the last 23 years have been unkind to it. Ocarina remains a brilliant example of the medium, a landmark game that shaped the future of its own franchise and 3D gaming in general. After more than two decades it retains its inventive dungeon design, challenging puzzles, dynamic combat, wistful storyline, unforgettable music, and empowering open-air freedom. I feel confident calling it one of the greatest games of the fifth generation, even if I'm no longer prepared to list it among the five best games ever made."

Pure unadulterated fun. They don't make them like this anymore...especially not the triple A industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic13d ago

Back when video rental was a thing, I rented out Majoria's Mask, I never finished it though. I did buy the 3DS version before the eshop shutdown, so maybe one day I'll finally play through the whole thing, it's amazing how well these games hold up though. I briefly played Ocarina of Time for a while and it was really fun.
