Activision Stock Drops 17% in Month Since Destiny Launch

Destiny's success can no longer be judged on hype and now must be judged on short and long-term financial results for its publisher. And currently, they're not looking so good.

Of course, investors want to make money right after the launch hype... I don't think most people realize how the stock market works lol.

Build up hype, gain investment, gradually increase the value of your assets, then once they've appreciated enough interest, the only thing to do is sell them at their appreciated rate and profit! $$$

What really, really worries me is that these people - who have no stake in the long-term growth of a company - have immense decision-making power as temporary stakeholders. These are the types of jackasses who devalued guitar hero year after year, knowing they wouldn't be around to suffer for it.

The way corporations work, they don't owe anything to their customers or even to their employees - it's all about making money for investors. That's their first priority according to the goddamn law. It's disgusting.

venom063488d ago

if Activision didn't have IGN hyping the HELL outta all of their FPS every year (benefits of conflict of interest business dealings with IGN through Activision buying the IGN ProLeague), the stock would've fell by even more than that. What it did sell, was sold by the over-the-top hype from IGN and the hype sites that look up to IGN like little brothers. Activision better be glad it was only down 17%

Barely-regulated free market capitalism. That's what this is all a result of.

krouse933487d ago (Edited 3487d ago )

In my opinion video game companies do best when they are privately held. Indie developers see huge success, and obviously don't have to be at the whim of outside investors. Plus Valve is actually privately held and they're massively successful.

It sucks that guitar hero got gutted because of what happened with Harmonix, but they shouldn't have signed with Activison. I do miss me some Guitar Hero, and Rockband too... I mean they kinda burned themselves to the ground with their yearly releases though.

Sony's shown us that Bi-yearly releases are the way to go for a lot of franchises, and if not by yearly than tri-yearly, or at least switch the platform around, transition from console to portable for one year, and add the extra polish on your games in the extra time.

@G-0ff

I think video games companies should be privately held, especially because as an artistic medium, their fragile and can't really preform the way an investor might want them too, you can't mass produce quantity with out compromising quality in that short 1 year period of time (especially when it comes to video games, because they're insanely difficult to create).

Jeez, I thought the game was selling well?

Am_Ryder3487d ago

It was and is selling decently. The stock falling is more to do with investors realising it might not be a great long-term investment and pulling out than anything to do with actual sales made.

Things like Metacritic ratings and cultural impact have a big influence on stocks as much as actual units shifted. And Destiny is not doing great on either of those two signposts.

SynestheticRoar3488d ago

Putting out a incomplete game can be the cause.

RebelWAC3488d ago

Relying on promotion and hype can only get you so far and in this case, backfire... bad. If it was a great game and not only ok, it would probably generate more buzz and sales via word of mouth but I don't hear anyone saying that it's a must buy (like TLOU for example). As for now, it's only a high budget mediocre game that didn't live up to the hype and I reckon gamers are getting sick and tired in general.

That's my take on it

LordDhampire3487d ago (Edited 3487d ago )

Game is a must buy in my book, if you have friends

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter332d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell331d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig332d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast332d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername332d ago (Edited 332d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g332d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka332d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

I've been thinking about playing through D1 again before it goes away...

CobraKai483d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface482d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog

spoonard480d ago

That's the bummer of 'games as a service'.
