Mantle API Can be Ported to Microsoft’s DirectX 12 Easily – AMD Releases White Paper

AMD has just dropped the mother of all bombs. Apparently Mantle API can be ported to DX12 very easily. Infact, it is easier to port to DirectX 12 than DX11 is. That means that developers should now have zero incentives to not use Mantle API.

Nice. MS europe and AMD are actually co hosting a developer conference on the 4th of next month in europe.xbox one game development is one of the topics.I'm sure we will hear more about this there.

codelyoko3618d ago

And am i the only one who noticed that consoles can be ported to Mantle :/

F4sterTh4nFTL3618d ago (Edited 3618d ago )

Console optimized games -> Mantle -> DirectX 12 = Good PC port.

codelyoko3618d ago

@FasterThanFTL Yup, we already know XB1 runs windows 8. So ports should be ridiculously easy, since PS4 is x86 too, that should be an easy port as well. Just need to convince these damn devs >.>

Qrphe3618d ago

No surprise, multiplats are typically ported to PC

truefan13618d ago

I hope June 2nd they reveal the true power of DX12 and show what the XB1 can do. I just refuse to believe MSFT spent all that money on a customized GRU for nothing.

Volkama3618d ago

Any reports you have read about the sum of money in any part of MS and AMD's dealings either obfuscate the details of what the money was for, or are entirely made up.

Stop clinging to this MrX stuff and just enjoy your games.

pyramidshead3617d ago

What he said^
The 1-3billion or so figure that's slung about is the total revenue AMD hope to receive through the life time of the Xbone hardware.

Magicite3617d ago

Oh the disappointment you will face.

tee_bag2423617d ago

I wish - DX12 is miles off actually being released. We're looking at 2015

F4sterTh4nFTL3618d ago (Edited 3618d ago )

This means AMD owners will be getting DirectX 12 level performance way before DirectX 12 is released and those Mantle games can easily be ported over to DirectX 12 with a patch if the developer wants to do it.

Brazz3618d ago

I think Mantle will work whit Nvidia cards, Perhaps i'm wrong, but considering what i read, if mantle go AMD cards only, AMD cards will have a "holy crap" advantage for almost a year over Nvidia cards.

incendy353618d ago

Haha, only if people use it. Which I doubt we will see very many supporters. Not because Mantle isn't awesome, but because developers want to write cross platform code and Mantle/All Low Level API is not really cross platform friendly.

Illusive_Man3618d ago

Where are the Sony fans? They seem very quiet.

hellzsupernova3618d ago

They are still probably jizzing over the leaked game play of project beast lol

Eonjay3618d ago

This has nothing to do with Xbox One or PS4. Mantle is an API for PCs. This announcement is a win for every AMD graphics card owner. Including myself.

hellzsupernova3618d ago

I am happy my r9 290 is pleased as well.

I was just answering his question about where the Sony fanboys are

christocolus3618d ago (Edited 3618d ago )

@eonjay

I think you are wrong dude, The xbox one is definitly part of the conference as directx12 is going to be the main topic of discussion at the conference. The xbox one too is going to be discussed by AMD and MS.you can look through the photo included. It has an entire session dedicated to it titled “inside xbox one” another session is dedicated to xbox indies and a few MS devs including those in europe(rare, lionhead)will be there. a few guys from dice too. Its scheduled for June 2nd,I guess we will know soon enough.

christocolus3618d ago (Edited 3618d ago )

@Eonjay

My reply is in regards to the other article. the one about AMD and MS DX12 conference. I thought your comment was reffering to that article too. You could check it out. I agree with you on this though, those who get the most out of mantle are pc users who run amd graphics cards.

HaydenJameSmith3618d ago (Edited 3618d ago )

@Eonjay

It's a good thing the Xbox One and PS4 have AMD Graphics Cards and CPUs then huh... Next Gen consoles are specialized PCs Bro so matters more than u think, a unified API between both consoles and PC could mean the world to some developers...

uth113618d ago

AMD has said mantle could work on PS4 as well.

deadfrag3618d ago (Edited 3618d ago )

Maybe you can reply to this troll @Dewitt that thinks he know stuff but actually he is just one big Microsoft/fanboy that knowns nothing.

Its not the first time that AMD says that if SONY and Microsoft wants they can support Both the PS4 and the Xboxone with MANTLE API!

http://www.dualshockers.com...

But since the two systems already code to the metal with the existing librarys;theres really no advantage on doing it.

OpenGL3618d ago

Why would you ever use it? PS4 already has a low-level graphics API called GNM that is more efficient than Mantle and DirectX 12. Developers that want an easier porting environment use GNMX.

GNM is the PS4's version of LibGCM which is what enabled games like The Last of Us on PS3.

Dewitt3617d ago

@deadfrag

Please KID, don't act like a child just because I actually know something about the subject matter. The comment above was clearly trolling and I wanted a source because DX12 and OpenGL do not use the same architecture, obviously.

uth113617d ago

I'm not trolling. AMD said mantle could be ported to the PS4, see link deadfrag posted.

Mantle is completely separate from DirectX and OpenGl

crusf3618d ago (Edited 3618d ago )

So your implying you miss Sony fans?

sourav933618d ago

I'm assuming they're enjoying the best version (for now until the PC problems get fixed) of Watch_Dogs right now, hence why they seem quite. But I don't see how this thread has anything to do with Sony or Xbox fans. This is a PC related article/thread.

Spotie3618d ago

Disregarding an article about PC gaming.

Or, at the least, not trolling it. Guess there are other people who can troll PC articles in their stead.

trickman8883618d ago

And at the end of the day, AMD will still suck.

mhunterjr3618d ago

This is great news for everyone, even Sony fans. The less time developer spend getting ports up and running efficiently, the more time to be spent in the optimization phase. I'm glad developers will be having an easier time getting closer to the metal.

Make your next GPU upgrade AMD as these latest-gen Radeon cards receive a special promotion

AMD has long been the best value option if you're looking for a new GPU. Now even their latest Radeon RX 7000 series is getting cheaper.

Father__Merrin3d ago

Best for the money is the Arc cards

just_looken3d ago

In the past yes but last gen amd has gotten cheaper and there new cards are on the horizon making 6k even cheaper.

The arc cards are no longer made by intel but asus/asrock has some the next line battlemage is coming out prices tbd.

Do to the longer software development its always best to go amd over intel if its not to much more money even though intel is a strong gpu i own 2/4 card versions.

AMD FSR 3.1 Announced at GDC 2024, FSR 3 Available and Upcoming in 40 Games

Last September, we unleashed AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3)1 on the gaming world, delivering massive FPS improvements in supported games.

Eonjay34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

So to put 2 and 2 together... FSR 3.1 is releasing later this year and the launch game to support it is Rachet and Clank: Rift Apart. In Sony's DevNet documentation it shows Rachet and Clank: Rift Apart as the example for PSSR. PS5 Pro also launches later this year... but there is something else coming too: AMD RDNA 4 Cards (The very same technology thats in the Pro). So, PSSR is either FSR 3.1 or its a direct collaboration with AMD for that builds on FSR 3.1. Somehow they are related. I think PSSR is FSR 3.1 with the bonus of AI... now lets see if RDNA 4 cards also include an AI block.

More details:
FSR 3.1 fixes Frame Generation
If you have a 30 series RTX card you can now use DLSS3 with FSR Frame Generation (No 40 Series required!)
Its Available on all Cards (we assume it will come to console)
Fixes Temporal stability

MrDead33d ago

I've been using a mod that allows dlss frame gen on my 3080 it works on all rtx series. It'll be good not to rely on mods for the future.

darksky33d ago

The mods avaiable are actually using FSR3 frame gen but with DLSS or FSR2 upscaling.

Babadook733d ago (Edited 33d ago )

I think that the leaks about the 5 Pro would debunk the notion that the two (FSR 3.1 and PSSR) are the same technology. PSSR is a Sony technology.

MrDead34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

I wonder how much they fixed the ghosting in dark areas as Nvidia are leaving them in the dust with image quality. Still good that they are improving in big leaps, I'll have to see when the RTX5000 series is released who I go with... at the moment the RTX5000's are sounding like monsters.

just_looken33d ago

Did you see the dell leaks were they are trying to cool cards using over 1k watts of power.

We are going to need 220 lines for next gen pcs lol

MrDead33d ago

That's crazy! Sounds like heating my house won't be a problem next winter.

porkChop33d ago

As much as I hate supporting Nvidia, AMD just doesn't even try to compete. Their whole business model is to beat Nvidia purely on price. But I'd rather pay for better performance and better features. AMD also doesn't even try to innovate. They just follow Nvidia's lead and make their own version of whatever Nvidia is doing. But they're always 1 or 2 generations behind when it comes to those software/driver innovations, so Nvidia is always miles ahead in quality and performance.

MrDead33d ago

I do a lot of work on photoshop so an Intel Nvidia set up has been the got to because of performance edge, more expensive but far more stable too. Intel also have the edge over AMD processors with better load distribution on the cores, less spikes and jitters. When you're working large format you don't want lag or spikes when you're editing or drawing.

I do think AMD has improved massively though and whist I don't think they threaten Nvidia on the tech side they do make very well priced cards and processors for the power. I'm probably going with a 5080 or 5090 but AMD will get a little side look from me, which is a first in a long time... but like you said they are a generation or two behind at the moment.

Goosejuice32d ago

While I can't argue for amd gpu, they aren't bad but they aren't great either. The cpu for amd have great. I would argue the 7800x3d as one of the best cpu for gaming right now. Idk about editing so I take ur word for that but gaming amd cpu is a great option these days.

porkChop32d ago

@Goosejuice

I have a 7800X3D. It certainly is great for gaming. Though for video editing, rendering, etc, I think Intel have the advantage from what I remember. I just mean from a GPU standpoint I can't support them.
