12.5k Rift DK2's Sold in first 36 Hours, Oculus Confirms

VRFocus - Oculus VR has confirmed that it has sold 12.5k units of its second developer kit for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset, named DK2, within the first 36 hours of pre-orders opening. Company founder Palmer Luckey confirmed the news to VRFocus at last night’s VR Mixer event at the 2014 Game Developers Conference (GDC).

I am torn on the idea of jumping in and getting one, or waiting a little while longer and getting either the next iteration or the consumer version (whichever comes first).

Decisions... decisions..

Si-Fly3688d ago

They've stated that this is the final version before release.

I'm on board, loved my DK1 and can't wait to get the new one :)

wait...so it's out now ?

VR doesn't personally appeal to me, but I think it's cool that it's advancing and the next steps are being taken to make it truly a great thing.

Neonridr3687d ago

well, it's not quite out yet. This is a preorder for the DK2 version. Shouldn't be too long of a wait though.

Final retail version is still a ways off.

starchild3688d ago

That's a whole lot of dev kits sold in a very short amount of time. The interest in VR is huge.

specialguest3688d ago

I've been waiting for the 2nd dev kit and I am so glad I didn't order the first one while it was about to be sold out. I just pulled the trigger and pre-ordered the dev kit 2. F**k yeah!! Can't wait! The plan is to resell it once it gets close to a consumer version being released.

I remember staring at the Kickstarter during the final day debating whether or not I should recklessly spend 300 dollars after I had just bought the parts for a new computer. I thought it financially irresponsible of me to waste more money at that time, so I decided not to back the project then.

I have regretted that decision dearly for the past 1.5 years.

I always wanted to get the devkit after they startedd shipping, but the wait times were awful and eventually it had been 6-8 months since they shipped it. You start to wonder when they were going to introduce the new devkit with each prototype they show. Hesitant to hit purchase, I would pitifully just lurk in the forum reading about all the great experiences everyone was having with the Rift. Needless to say, I ordered devkit 2 within the hours of its posting. Never making that mistake again.

What are you going to use it on? Is it even supported by anything yet?

specialguest3687d ago (Edited 3687d ago )

There are many games from indie to full fledged games that either have full support or partial support. Some games are just demos to try out the experimental VR concepts the game was built on. Here's a list of available supported games and confirmed/planned supported games. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/w...

I got the game Daylight, and by the time my pre-ordered oculus rift is shipped in July, Daylight should have full support. I also want to play War Tunder and Star Citizen which have some support now and will improve by July. Half life 2 and Team Fortress 2 also have support now and I'll give that a try.

Yet the NORMAL people still have to wait... Sigh...

Si-Fly3688d ago

What normal people? I'm pretty normal and I'm not waiting!

I'm glad Oculus is getting that support and that interest in VR is big. This is also good news for Morpheus.

That's fine. GT7 would overshadow it anyway at it has open wheel and regular cars.

Should have been spending their time updating Squadrons with better resolution, frame rate, haptics, etc as there isn't a game like that on PS VR 2 yet.

But it's EA. They don't think.

Babadook7350d ago

I agree. It would sell better on PSVR2 right now.

Knushwood Butt350d ago (Edited 350d ago )

A wasted opportunity, but I don't buy EA / Codemasters stuff anyway. Grid Legends just came out on Plus and I haven't touched it. Why would I when I have GT7 and PSVR2?

Abnor_Mal350d ago

Not into F1 racing, but still a missed opportunity.

ApocalypseShadow350d ago

That's where opportunity presents itself that they could offer something else that other developers haven't offered yet. Yeah. There's No Man's Sky. But a space game with a story would be great. Like the old days with Colony Wars.

Abnor_Mal350d ago

Exactly, they could have possibly lured more players just from the inclusion of a vr mode.

I miss Colony wars and G-Police, Low-Fi I hope will scratch that itch when it releases. We also need a vr War/Starhawk game.

Knushwood Butt350d ago

Just watched the trailer of Low-Fi. Most definitely on my radar.

Although I never owned an oculus, I played the demo for this at an electronics store. Pretty impressive in an early goings of VR title.
