inFamous: Second Son review - Eurogamer

Announcing the third inFamous game at the unveiling of PlayStation 4 last year, director Nate Fox got political. He mentioned that he'd been tear-gassed in 1999's anti-globalisation riot, the Battle of Seattle (an event he's been invoking in interviews for a while). He attacked the police. He touched on the troubling extent of government surveillance that was dominating headlines at the time. "Our security comes at a high price: our freedom," he declared, before linking current affairs back to inFamous lore - an unruly superhero universe where the emergence of super-powered humans in present-day USA causes chaos and unrest. "Which of us would have the courage to fight to get our freedoms back?" he asked.

Mixed reviews... but still getting the game.

DanManDantheMan3690d ago (Edited 3690d ago )

It's [Any site that tells me what I don't want to hear]

Volkama3690d ago (Edited 3690d ago )

But the text of the interview is quite positive.

It's getting marked down quite heavily for not offering the breadth of activity that GTA5 offers. You don't need another GTA5 just to have some fun though, so this still looks a worthwhile showpiece to me.

Personally I wouldn't hold GTA5 against it as super powers make for a sufficiently different experience. But I'd mark it down a point or 2 for repeated use of the word "hater".

Alan_Shore3690d ago

Most i have seen have been good. 7 is a great score. Definitely a game to get

Clown_Syndr0me3690d ago

7 is probably a more realistic score than 9s and 10s. Very rarely is a game perfect, scoring 9 or 10 says there is little to no room for improvement

Blaze9293690d ago

there's always a conspiracy or "reason" for the scores PlayStation exclusives get. That's just funny to me. Maybe, it's just one person's opinion?

I don't see what "it's eurogamer" means or "they gave titanfall a higher score" relevance in this.

HiddenMission3690d ago

How do you not see the relevance. Eurogamer has been in trouble before with improper conduct directed at Sony in the past and even had them black listed at one point.

Titanfall while fun lacked key features from a title and even blaring issues that were once talked about has highlights but those have been overlooked simply because of the hype.

When you factor in these two pieces of the puzzle you can see that Eurogamer is continuing is negative spin trend against Sony and it's titles. Very rarely does it deviate and that's only because it doesn't want to be on a blacklist again...since it would kill it's hits.

Don't be too mad I'm just stating my opinion based on observations.

Elit3Nick3690d ago

Exactly, Ryse got not so good reviews but a lot of people seem to enjoy it. No opinion is more relevant to you than your own.

"As pretty and playable as it is, in no sense is inFamous: Second Son a post-Grand Theft Auto 5 open-world game. It's just a tidier, shorter and shinier one. It's easy to enjoy and has a winning personality, but it's reluctant to deviate from a stale streetmap of game city. It's no rebel, then. In fact, it's a conformist."

In other words its missing shitty mini games(Tennis Golf) that add nothing to the game -3 points.

jackanderson19853690d ago

there's more than the last paragraph or even one paragraph to take note of.

sure look i could have posted;

"Overall, it's good clean fun - so it's a shame that Second Son suffers from a consistent failure of imagination in how it's put together. There's not been much of an attempt to shake up the mission scenarios or structure of the game, leaving you with a very rote open-world adventure. "

and said oh that doesn't read like a 7

FlyingFoxy3690d ago

Sounds more like GTA 3 or IV which was all city and i found it boring compared to VC and SA

Bathyj3690d ago

Exactly. Its not trying to be everything in an open world. Its try (and succeeding) at being the most fun (and most gorgeous) Superhero game, that just happens to be in an open world.

Volkama3690d ago

Saints row 4 is a superhero game that's fun(ny), and offers a decent amount to be getting on with as well as an entertaining core.

Infamous looks better, but I wont know if it is better before playing it. It definitely looks worthy of a purchase either way, I like this kind of game.

Unfortunately my plan to get a PS4 the day this came out has been scuppered because my 5 year old put a toy through my TV. But I will definitely play it when I do get the console.

TimeSkipLuffy3690d ago

I don't think that Infamous should be compared to GTA. It has a different style and flair in my opinion.

Neonridr3690d ago

open world games are compared to open world games. Nature of the beast.

TimeSkipLuffy3690d ago (Edited 3690d ago )

open world games can be very different in the way it has been executed. I felt Infamous was always more action driven.

Just because two games are open world games does not mean that they are meant to be compared to each other.

I could compare Infamous SS to LEGO Marvel Heroes. What would be my conclusion then?

Neonridr3690d ago

I am not saying it's an acceptable practice, but games of similar genres are always compared to each other.

Charybdis3690d ago (Edited 3690d ago )

what do they even mean with: " it's reluctant to deviate from a stale streetmap of game city. It's no rebel, then. In fact, it's a conformist".

jackanderson19853690d ago

well COD has a winning formula and everyone wants them to change it... people want new risks in established IPs to breathe new life into it... i haven't had a chance to play this second son (still getting it regardless of reviews) and i'll form my opinion then, only way to really do it

webeblazing3690d ago

I think they mean its boring when your not doing the mission and it makes the game get stale. This happened to my friend in the last infamous and I want to take the remote from him. Some people Dont like exploring and doing stuff in the city. The side mission in infamous is better batman to me I hate batman side missions. The game isn't for some.

MONKEYDLUFFY3690d ago

From what I'm seeing despite the mixed scores the game is at least as good as the first one. Since I love that one its a must buy

100%, locked 60fps and still look great all these years later, same with the expansion, definitely worth a look if people haven't played it yet, not the best games ever made but a good experience, hopefully a new infamous gets released

KwietStorm_BLM104d ago

Never was my favorite infamous, but it was definitely a graphics showcase early on PS4. Still plays well with the unlocked frame rate.

SDuck104d ago

Still remember getting hyped about this game nearing release. Funny because I never even got a PS4. Jumped from PS3 to PC so I never played it ahahaha

OmegaSoldati104d ago

Its a good game. But thats it. Congratulations you made the best choice. I dream to have a great PC one day.

Profchaos104d ago (Edited 104d ago )

Graphically It's a absolutely stunning game that still holds up today.

Didn't have all that much depth to it forcing you to play though twice for a platinum trophy a good and bad run it was a little disappointing how similar those were Delsin would be like I'm not doing that for you in a cutscene but the cutscene would play out and force you to do it anyway just as you would of in a good run

I did like the story however it got a lot of complaints back in the day people hated playing as Delsin instead of cole despite Coles story being wrapped up.

Overall though the map wasn't overly saturated with useless points of interest there was some collectibles and things to find but nothing compared to a Ubisoft game.

I think it was a good game if a little hollow I've played it through around 4 times now since it's so short.

Also it's DLC was great a full story expansion

I've played 15, and I wouldn't consider any of those underrated TBH. Some of them are pretty high rated.

banger88136d ago

That's amazing, Gamingbolt actually put all 15 games on the same page.

shinoff2183135d ago

I. Not seeing anything on that list underrated. I never played concrete genie, the ASTRO vr,and one other but I forgot the name already. Nothing on there was underrated at all imo.

persona4chie134d ago

There’s only 4 of those games I never played, and no most of those aren’t underrated.
