THIEF will NOT Launch with Mantle Support, Coming in March via a Patch

THIEF will be the second game that will support AMD’s new API, Mantle. And while Nixxes Software and Square Enix claimed that the game would support Mantle from the get-go, EIDOS Montreal’s ‘Valerie Bourdeau’ revealed that this won’t be the case after all.

Well, shit.

Maybe it won't be as demanding on the CPU, so Mantle won't really be necessary, but we'll see.

starchild4139d ago

Kind of disappointing. I was looking forward to trying out Mantle with this game.

Hopefully it runs well even without Mantle. I'm really excited for the game.

RedDeadLB4139d ago

Mantle is a godsend for me in Battlefield 4.
In DX11 I have GPU usage and framerate drops down to 50fps in some instances with my i5 3570k. With Mantle, no GPU usage drops whatsoever, framerate is tons smoother.

Was planning on buying this on a sale later on anyways so this works for me :) though kinda does suck for those who buy it this week

Mantle proves that optimizations only help weak hardware get the largest performance boost. Those of us with Intel i7 CPU's only get a 10% boost vs DirectX, but under DirectX the i7 processors still destroy those weaker processors that are using Mantle!!!

This should make it clear to anyone out there that the best optimizations in the world will not make weak hardware beat the most powerful hardware that is not using optimized software.

starchild4139d ago

Yeah, although I have an AMD graphics card I really don't think that Mantle itself is going to end up taking over as the dominant API.

I believe what it WILL do is show the advantages of lower level optimizations and through competition result in a future version of the DirectX API with similar low level optimizations.

Over half the PC gaming market is using Nvidia graphics cards and even though it might be theoretically possible for Nvidia to use Mantle it's highly unlikely that they will.

Getting a better performing DirectX API instead of moving the entire industry over to a new API will be better for gamers anyway.

dont effect x1 or ps4 anyway this is pc only

SteamPowered4139d ago

Your point? You think PC games arent played anymore?

Read 'em weep. It does matter. To a lot of people. And you can thank all those PC gamers that "don't matter" for that shiny new AMD video card and the GDDR5 RAM in your console that we made possible by playing PC games and supporting the need for and advancement of newer and higher powered graphics processing hardware.

SteamPowered4139d ago

Soooo, this will have no effect on those of us with Nvidia cards?

Thief - Taken From Us Too Soon

The Thief game series has had many ups-and-downs, and 2014's reboot showed a great deal of promise nearly a decade ago.

Notellin696d ago

This would be such a great franchise to reboot. A darker game than Dishonored, but focused around stealth and large scale heists from an oppressive monarchy.

That's probably my dream game. I love immersive sims and stealth!

Noskypeno696d ago

People say they hate forced stealth sections in games. But a game focused on stealth with good mechanics and level design feels refreshing from the guns blazing games which I also enjoy. I really enjoyed playing Splinter cell, a game that not many try to mimic today. Not too many games let you shoot lights out, or throw cans or bottles to distract guards. Sure there are games with stealth options like the new Wolfenstein but it doesn't feel necessary to play it that way. Hitman might be the only game that has that feeling, except for that Korean game that may or may not ever come out.

You should try the Sniper Elite games, so good, especially with coop

Notellin695d ago

Same here. I'm glad there are some other people who enjoy these types of games!

@isarai I tried Sniper Elite 5 and ended up really enjoying that one. Went back and played 4 as well!.

ModsDoBetter696d ago (Edited 696d ago )

The last one was a trainwreck and has been in the bargain bin since just after launch. If they bring it back, they need a massive change in direction.

Inverno696d ago

only direction they should take is putting it in reverse and going back to what the originals did. I couldn't finish this game, and I made a choice to never play it again. I watched a video about the og Thief and Deus Ex games and the current AAA standard will forever hold back these games. These 2 games alone had already solved so many problems with modern gaming that I don't think they'll get a chance at something great unless they're made by a dev that actually give a damn.

Jesus the last installment sells at about 2 euro and even that is over paying for it. Absolutely diabolical game

SimpleSlave696d ago

Ups and Down? More like Up, UP, Pot Hole, Free Fall into the Abyss...

Thief Deadly Shadows remaster would be awesome.
