Pokémon Dominates Japan, but Grand Theft Auto V has a great Debut on Major Retailer’s Sales Charts

Like every Monday the major Japanese retail and rental chain Tsutaya released its weekly sales charts, and at last you can see some change in the archipelago of the rising sun, with Monster Hunter 4 finally dethroned after a full month of unchallenged domination.

The most interesting part, though, is that it wasn't dethroned just by Pokémon.

Western games are slowly showing decent sales in Japan. Good to see Japanese gamers trying out foreign games. Can't really blame them since the quality of Japanese games has dropped down considerably these past few years, at least on consoles.

Abriael3859d ago

Not it hasn't. There are some awesome japanese games on consoles out there.

Sen no Kiseki is fantastic. Not having bleeding edge graphics doesn't make a game any less good.

Shinobi1003859d ago

@Abriel, you list ONE good Japanese game and admit it has sucky graphics? Where did you learn to argue?? Even Japanese developers admit Japanese games suck

Abriael3859d ago

@Shinobi100: if graphics are your index to identify a good game, then you need better taste.

And I just named a game in this week's chart, that is way bigger and better than most western games.

And if by "japanese developers" you mean Inafune, you also need better sources. His whole "the japanese industry sucks (but I'm different)" mantra has become stale years ago.

knifefight3859d ago (Edited 3859d ago )

Um, Shinobi, there's more to a game than just teh purdy graphix. (For what it's worth, Sen no Kiseki looks as good as it needs to anyway, kind of a moot point here.)

If you're upset that Abriael has only named one good Japanese game from "these past few years," then allow me to continue. Now, keep in mind, that YOU might not like them, but that's okay. See, different people like different things. The following games are Japanese titles that *I* consider great, and a *lot of other people* also consider great, though I'm perfectly aware that you might turn up your nose and sneer at them. We'll stretch back three years, so, since 2010...

Yakuza 4 and 5
Rain
Gravity Rush
Ace Attorney 5
Professor Layton & The Miracle Mask
Professor Layton & The Azran Legacy
Xenoblade
Final Fantasy Type-0
Valkyria Chronicles III
Tales of Xillia
Tales of Xillia 2
Tales of Graces
Ni no Kuni
Hatsune Miku
Nier
Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
Several Monster Hunter games
A few different Legend of Heroes games
The Last Story
BlazBlue
Hot Shots Golf 6
Dragon's Crown
Vanquish
Etrian Odyssey III, IV, and Millenium Girl
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Bayonetta

And basically every first-party Nintendo game. Mario is still going strong, the Year of Luigi seems to have gone well, and the new Animal Crossing was a worldwide smash.

I'm also probably forgetting several.

So, um...there's that.

GTA games have always been selling well in Japan, it isn't new.

The_Truth_24_73859d ago (Edited 3859d ago )

Because Duke Nukem Forever/Aliens Colonial Marines quality was top-notch.

dcj05243859d ago

No. But The Last of Us was pretty fun. This whole division is stupid. All games should just be games. Not Western Soutgern Northern Eastern games. Its stupid.

dredgewalker3859d ago (Edited 3859d ago )

@DC
It can't be helped since games from each region have their own unique characteristics like design and gameplay. It's like comparing food from different countries. Speaking of food I forgot to have lunch.......

Why clowns keep beating a dead horse how Japanese games suck.
A few games suck and everyone is acting like the whole Japanese market suck.
I can name a lot of good Japanese games, the reason why everyone think all Western games are gods gift is because of the massive Fps crap going on right now that's all cod cod battle field all fps how many times really good games like GTA comes around you tell me once in a while same go's for japan you're going to have crap and you're going to have gems that's how things are
Good Japanese games
No no kuni
Ninja guiden edge
Meramasa
Dragon crown
White night chronicles 1/2
Gravity rush vita
Shinobi vita
Rain
Tales games
Demon soul
Yakuza
Kingdom hearts
That's just off the top of my head there's more

Inception3858d ago

Can't agree more with you. Why some people act like all japanese game are suck and western games are flawless & always inovate is beyond stupid.

More interested in money than giving fans what they want. Such a shame

CrimsonWing6914d ago

With the amount of money they generated, I just don’t understand the scrubbing of this. It would’ve been fantastic for fans.

Profchaos14d ago

I really want to know who drove the decision to focus on multiplayer was it Rockstar or take two.

Because when online started taking off many of the studio leads began having falling outs and leading including a founder

Demetrius14d ago

Ikr mfs that greedy it's ridiculous

andy8514d ago

This makes me sad. Trevor was one of my favourite characters in gaming

Demetrius14d ago

One of the reason I believe once gta 6 release, most of us thoroughly play it, enjoy the world they crafted then after that no offline support, no dlc at all
