Valve’s new Steam Controller: A gamepad revolution our thumbs won’t accept

The trackpads and face buttons worry me the most.
The trackpad is basically a virtual analog stick and like the writer said, if you've tryed mobile gaming with that thing, it blows.
The face buttons are so awkwardly placed as well.

My concern:

How do you run with left stick, and press buttons at same time?

Do I have to pick between reloading or running ?

This seems like a step backwards.

KillrateOmega3894d ago

The touch pad aspect will definitely take some getting used to. I've played touch screen games before that have tried to emulate analog stick functionality. Let's just say that don't have the best performance track records...

Also, what's up with the button placement? Would it not make more sense to have all the buttons grouped closely together? To press Y or X, it looks like I would have to take my thumb off the left touch pad. What if need to keep using the touch pad to, let's say, more forward? If need to press Y or X, would have to just stop completely? Also, what if need to press to buttons at the same time?

Maybe it will just take some getting used to, but it does fairy awkward as it currently stands.

It looks weird, and the idea of it seems a little strange as well. I'm not sure how it'll work at all, and it may be an expensive proposition to be able to try the thing out, only to find it's not that great.

I think a better solution is simply a wireless mouse and keyboard, or better yet, one of those Splitfish controllers you can get that has a mouse and nunchuck set up with programmable buttons on both. Combine that with a PS4 or Xbox One joypad for games that work better with a pad. The Steam pad looks more than a little awkward, as those above have already said.

My thumbs definitely won't accept this thing. Whatever it is. Lol

This pad might prove good in fps or rts games. I don't think so it will be suitable for all genres.

Kurisu3894d ago

I don't think I'd get on with it either. I used to have a Sony Erricson Xperia Play and I didn't like the track pads at all. It never felt natural, it always felt like something was missing and because of that it never felt comfortable.

RiPPn3894d ago

It seems to me this will be like playing with a virtual controller on a touchscreen device.

The_Truth_24_73894d ago

And that is a crappy experience.

Unannounced Valve 6v6 Shooter MOBA Footage Leaked

ESTNN writes: "A leak for Valve's 6v6 3rd-person shooter MOBA has supposedly been released ahead of time. And if the reports are true, fans of the genre have much to be excited for."

Deadlock looks like bioshock and Moba had babies

JunonZanon3d ago

Valve really cannot count to 3.

Number1TailzFan3d ago

They should've had a new L4D like 10 years ago, it can be expanded upon a lot more but they just left it collecting dust.. it was a good game for its time but L4D2 doesn't have nearly enough content these days to keep players engaged, and it needs a serious graphics upgrade

mastershredder3d ago

Nice bend at the knee there Gabe. Seriously? A quirky character arena shooter? This late into the me-too-shooter market? I thought you guys were so much better than that crap. Gabe must need a bigger yacht.

clown comment, valve are famous for letting their devs work on whatever they want as they have no share holders to please. hence why we rarely get games from valve but when we do they generally are great.

icefrog, the original modder who created dota on warcraft 3 is working on this with some other members at valve.

Nice. It's really cool that PC players get to play this masterpiece.

PrinceOfAnger8d ago

It has surpassed spider man now
it's 71k+
game did this with way shorter time than spider man.

itsmebryan7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

@prince
I'm confused. Does that number mean total players at one time playing like a snapshot
or total sales? If it's the former that's not very accurate because I know I'm not the only person that buys games and plays them later and that number is not included.

RNTody8d ago

Great, I loved this game. Definitely think it's Sucker Punch's best work to date!

rippermcrip8d ago

Is this going to be the new thing thing? Articles about Steam reviews? Which of course was in response to the false article about the review bombings in the first place.

Christopher8d ago

Hey, just a heads up that the new owners did open news to Steam updates, but we try our best to not allow them to go on daily updates unless relevant to some other news. I understand this isn't everyone's cup and tea and sympathize, but the door has been open. If you feel it's 'too much' please do PM me or submit a ticket to the mod team. Thank you.

I came here to post this link in that specific article. 84 perce t is pretty good. How many bad reviews were there like 5

GamerzElite8d ago

This is good game and Ghost eliminate all fake outrage.

CrimsonWing698d ago (Edited 8d ago )

I always get confused by this, but is 72k good sales numbers for a game? I keep seeing games fail at selling 2.5 million and that they need to be on multiple platforms but is an additional 72k adding much?

Fishy Fingers8d ago

Im not sure how its confusing :\

72k actively playing. Not 72k sold.

A good example is Helldivers 2, 6m sold, 450k (at its peak) active players.

But how many swords swung is what we're all really waiting for.

shinoff21838d ago

Lmao. How many swords swung. I was hoping for how many steps

wesnytsfs7d ago

And its how many years old from initial release.

Crows908d ago

72k is concurrent
...that is not the sold figure.

Michiel19898d ago

for one they already had a huge launch on the playstation, they don't need to sell 5m to make the porting to pc profitable and as pointed out below that number you see is just the people playing it at this moment.

Plague-Doctor278d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Also from the insomniac leak we know these PC ports are a quick turnaround and budgeted around $2-4 million. At 100k sales they break even including Steams cut. They may not sell millions but they are a great ROI

elazz8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

72k concurrent. That is a global number. People who bought the game are not playing at the same time because of timezones, working schedules, holidays, events... There is no good rule of thumb but you can extrapolate based on other games that also released sales data. Then it is clear that the PC release alone accounts for at least 500K copies sold on steam, maybe closer to 700-800K. Probably will sell over a million this extended weekend.

According to steamspy and other data gathering sites games like Days Gone, Spider Man, God Of War, Horizon Zero Dawn have sold 2 to 5 million copies on Steam. So I expect Ghost to reach similar numbers. Probably even surpass it.
