Valve Patent for a Customizable Controller Found, Is This the Day 2 Announcement?

8CN: A Valve patent for a "video game controller having user swappable control components" has been discovered. The design would allow for modular components to be slotted into different sockets, allowing for "dual analog sticks, a combination of analog and trackball, or further any combination of touchpad, directional pad, or additional components."

reminds me of the Wii U control pad

i wonder who did theirs first

Murad4288d ago

I'm guessing Valve, maybe.

Stuntz4288d ago (Edited 4288d ago )

Isnt the reason for PC gaming so you get away from the controller? I am confused almost everyone is like Screw console gaming mouse and keyboard is way better. So why make a controller?

solar4288d ago

you obviously dont get it so please stop commenting

Stuntz4288d ago

would you do me the courtesy of explaining it to me then?

Mario184288d ago (Edited 4288d ago )

@Stuntz

Be careful, he is a Valve fanbot

Khimarhi4288d ago

To expand your audience. If a company ONLY allows mouse and keyboard then you alienate those who don't like them. You open up new avenue for customers by doing things like this.

Stuntz4288d ago

wont that create unequal gaming though? Since mouse and keyboard apparently is so much better it would not be fair to those who are going to use the controller? I am still confused because i haven't heard a valid argument.

Khimarhi4288d ago

Many games aren't competitive at all. So whatever advantage a mouse and keyboard would have is moot. There is nothing wrong with more input options. I don't understand what you have against it.

3xkrazy4288d ago

You obviously can't see the big picture.

Fighter - plug in a stick/controller
RPG - " " controller
FPS - " " Mouse & Keyboard
...
...
etc.
Choice is good. It's up to you if you wanna live in the 90s.

battlegrog4288d ago (Edited 4288d ago )

I get that and i agree to some extend,But pretty much 85 percent if not more are nicer to use with a controller. Anything thats not a shooter is not going to be easier to use with a keyboard mouse.Other then mmo ect.

Plus Valve has been talkin about making a very advanced controller compared to the others. Apparently they have managed to improve latency and precise. We dont know yet but the pattens show button switch out. So maybe we will get the option to use analog sticks or 2 trackballs.I believe noone has ever made trackballs in the shape of a controller. With much updated technology with that, I could see it being pretty dam good in a comfy controller setup.

And dont forget that keyboard mouse is always going to be a option for it. Like the guy said above.

steve30x4288d ago

I disagree. I find all games easier with keyboard and mouse. I have been playing GTA V with the past week on my Xbox 360 and I cant get used to the controller. I find most shooting scenes very hard with the controller because the controls are so imprecise

Volkama4288d ago

A trackball in place of the right analogue stick is a very interesting option. Potentially a best of both worlds setup- Mouse-like accuracy with analogue directional movement (and joypad comfort).

I've never really tried trackballs, but I'd certainly give a pad like this a go.

Jovanian 4288d ago

pc is about freedom of input method. Controllers are good for some things, m/kboard is good for some things. Console is about restriction of input method

starchild4288d ago

Well said. I like to use k&m for some games and a gamepad for others.

feedurhabit4288d ago

Yeah, this pretty much covers it

Mr Tretton4288d ago (Edited 4288d ago )

@Stuntz, The reason for PC gaming, is OPTIONS.

steve30x4288d ago

This would be good for console gamers that dont like keyboard and mouse> Surely Steam OS will allow both keyboard + mouse as well as their own controller.

Wow. Believe me or not, but I thought up an idea for this controller some years ago. It's like they read my thoughts! Cool that they're doing it.

3xkrazy4288d ago

Lets just hope they don't encrypt the Linux kernel and lock us out on other 3rd party peripherals.

PS3 controller ain't working? Patch/enable sources, compile, and install your new kernel for support. ;)

steve30x4288d ago

The announcement said that you can modify the OS

Valve Makes Up for Steam Deck Repair Delay by Gifting Free Game

Valve gave a user Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for free as compensation for the long wait during their Steam Deck repair.

UltimateOwnage35d ago

I had a similar experience when I initially pre-ordered my Deck. There was an issue during shipping and they offered me a customer service perk for the hassle and let me pick any game on Steam. It was super nice of them. I got a copy of Rime.

Valve doesn't need to compete with Nintendo Switch 2 right now, suggests poll

There have been plenty of comparisons online between the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2, but does Valve really need to compete?

gold_drake66d ago

i love how people think this would be a fair "fight"

SegaSaturn66965d ago

Steamdeck plays Switch games better than the switch hardware.

I see no reason why this won't continue with the successors. Switch will sell more, sure. But those who game on PC always come out ahead both in enjoyment and value for their money.

Neonridr65d ago

you think a Steam Deck is going to emulate a Steam 2 when it's arguably more powerful than it?

Interesting..

Vits65d ago

We're going to have to wait and see. Currently, there's no technology that would allow a Steam Deck 2 to achieve a performance leap over the Steam Deck 1 similar to what the Switch 2 offers over the Switch 1, without sacrificing the device's portability.

We'll either need AMD to seriously improve the efficiency of their cores, so we can get something with the rasterization power of a Radeon 8060S but without the power consumption of an Xbox Series S, or Valve would have to invest heavily in a translation layer for ARM. Neither of these paths is easy to achieve, so we probably shouldn't expect a Steam Deck 2 for at least a 3 or 4 more years.

Inverno65d ago

Considering that other companies have shat out multiple PC handhelds already while Valve hasn't even mentioned a successor tells me they aren't looking to compete with anyone. They went for a console experience and that includes holding off on new hardware til there's a generational leap.

--Onilink--65d ago

None of those other companies can realistically compete with Valve either. Valve can sell the hardware for a minimal gain and still know they are for the most part, just having every user still use Steam.

Every other handheld has to make its profit entirely on the hardware, which is why most of them went for an even more PC enthusiast market/price point

That is the one point where Nintendo does compete with Valve, or Sony with their rumored handheld or even more so MS, if they release a first party handheld (with a decent version of handheld windows)

What many people don't get is that most of Steam Deck users have a high-end or at least a good enough PC alongside the Steam Deck. Yes, we like better graphics and higher refresh rates and we get them in our PC, we are not relying on the Steam Deck for them. We use the Deck for other reasons and in other eventualities, where we are willing to compromise on all these things, because we still get to enjoy them when we can/feel like it in the PC. Thus, a direct comparison with a sole device like the Switch is misplaced. Of course you need the Switch 2 to be strong if there is no stronger alternative to play your games in. By the way I got a Switch on day 1 and I loved it, it's just that I'm not really playing it anymore.
