Are Videogame Movies The Next Comic-Book Movies?

In the space of just a few months, there's been at least two large-scale films announced with substantial backing behind them. Due to begin production in 2014 is World of Warcraft - based on the hugely-successful MMORPG. Assassin's Creed is also due for the cinematic treatment and Michael Fassbender has been charging forward with this, or rather pushing silently through crowds.

They first have to make a GOOD video game movie that is a commercial success.

Had Silent Hill dropped that meandering middle section the movie it would have been somewhat good...

Resident Evil Degeneration was a really good CGi movie but I agree. There are two important things that must happen to create a perfect video game movie:

1. Destroy Uwe Boll and and anything else he touches.
2. Allow the actual team get involved in the development so these Hollywood directors can't revision our favorite IPs and ruin them.

Glad to see they are doing a Rachet and Clank film now. That is something that everyone can love. Outstanding writing from Insomniac.

3. Erase Paul W.S Anderson & Mila Jovovich from existence.

Agreed though %100. As much as i'd like a good live-action film, they should just stick to CG films.

They will be, just wait a while. Our generation needs to get a little older, and when we get into Hollywood we will make good movies.

Right now, Hollywood big wigs just don't like video games. there is no respect for them there. So we wont get a good movie because they will always blame the game.

Yeah, that didn't work for my generation - we made Mario, Resident Evil and Doom. Sorry

blacktiger3887d ago

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!! I WAS JUST GOING TO SAY THAT. However Soldierone is totally right. The reason why Hollywood don't like video games is because of they don't want movie goers that games are also fun. It's all market share in Entertainment. You forgot didn't you that there is a market share in Entertainment Business but in categories wise!

The generation of gamers is really strong coming out of the 80's. The strongest point was in the 90's. Those kids are only in their 20s or 30s. Not old enough to greenlight a good project.

Thats why we get Resident Evil, Doom, etc... big names, lots of explosions, lots of action.

When games are more respected, then more key icons from our industry will be chosen. I mean look at What hollywood was doing to comics until 2000. Spiderman, spiderman, spiderman, superman superman superman..... Look at Batman, completely missing the point for how many movies?

Today a Ironman gets greenlit and it leads to other not as popular characters getting a chance. Right now the game industry is just those "not so popular" characters. It will take one great hit, and a new generation of directors and producers to get it done.

Honestly its already happening because you have studioes like ubisoft trying to produce their own movies. Thats what Marvel had to do to get respect in the industry, otherwise we wouldn't have Iron Man or the Avengers.

A movie on World of Warcraft is a little late imo. They should have had that one going around Wrath of the Lich King. Now it'll basically be another Kung Fu Panda sequel.

Wni03887d ago

No because 99.9 % of vidogame stories are terrible. Last time I checked shitty screenplays make for shitty movies.

Not saying comic books are THAT much better, but they have to drop the BS like TDK did. I would put TDK in the crime drama section like Chinatown or godather and not with the shit like watchmen or 300.

Get Bioshock with Paul Thomas Anderson and now we'll set up the oscar races.
