Unity Engine Shows Off The Most Photorealistic Characters We've Ever Seen [NSFW]

DSOGaming writes: "Now this is simply impressive. Lee Perry-Smith has released a new video, showcasing some characters in Unity Engine. According to Lee, this video demonstrates a standard for sharing 3D full-body scans online with Unity for clients." (PC, PS4, Unity Engine 4, Xbox One)

I don't get it: he scanned real persons like that? So where are the REAL models then to compare?

Edit: I found where: http://ir-ltd.net/

This is the REAL deal, all the fuss is not about the Unity Engine or sth, it is about this technic of 3D scanning called Infinite Realities. Scroll down to see Recent Clients: Sony, Platige, Valve, Crytek and Microsoft. For those downplaying Killzone on PS4, expect to see such quality on PS4 with Naughty Dog (who finally converted to using 3D scans) and Quantic Dream. Valve is welcome too with their Source Engine 2 .

Not sure you could demonstrate what was being demonstrated in a batter way than that.

Nice lighting and shaders and all that jazz, don't get me wrong. But there's just something...disturbing about their lifelessness.

It's the whole uncanny valley thing...

When the spark of a soul isn't there, the images give a reaction to some that they're watching a bunch of corpses. I'm sure everyone has that reaction, it depends upon the resolution.

I had mine with the Atari 2600.

hoju69  +   476d ago
It's not as impressive you some may think. These are 3D scans we are talking about. Of course they look photo-realistic. The models nor the textures were created by hand by artists. It is an exact virtual replication of the person who was scanned. But models and textures of this high of resolution is still a long way off from being able to be practical in games.

Really the most impressive part of this demo is the work the done on the skin shaders. Excellent use of sub-surface scattering.
TheDevKit  +   476d ago
It's a shame we can't scan movement properly yet.

Pixel_Enemy  +   475d ago
I agree TheDevKit, the only devs who I have seen do motion capture right are Naughty Dog. I appreciate how they do the mocap and the voice acting at once to make it smooth and more realistic. Mocap and voice in a sound booth always has a disconnect.

The facial motion capture in LA Noire was amazing but they captured the face and body separately which made the end result off and odd. We need to figure out a better way.

ChickeyCantor  +   475d ago
Unity 4 comes with blend trees which makes animation look far more natural. But yeah animation data is expensive.

Walking/running/other actions in a environment that isn't empty? No chance they'd still look that good.
Fireseed  +   476d ago
Yeah these are body scans, not actual animateable models.
kalkano  +   476d ago
Body scans? Yes.
Animateable? Yes.
Leio  +   476d ago
If its a model its animateable but i´m not sure how pretty it´ll look then.

Facial expressions and motion capture contribute a lot more to realism than good textures and shading
Fireseed  +   476d ago
@Both of you

Generally body scans imply billions of polygons, I can take one of my Zbrush sculpts and animate... but it'll chug like a sonavagun.
aliengmr  +   476d ago
That video was real-time and one of the characters was animated slightly.

I grant you that the most extreme details would be lost if they were animated, but they can be animated, as evident by the video.

Were they made for that purpose? No.

Would they be ideal? No.
hoju69  +   476d ago
With proper topology, you can animate any model. That being said models like this would need to be HEAVILY reworked to be properly rigged.
FrigidDARKNESS  +   476d ago

We won't be getting models this high poly on PS4/X1.
Tei777  +   476d ago
I don't think we'll need the same poly count to give the illusion of this level of detail. I'm sure they'll develop plenty of tricks to mimick it :)

Not the same as next gen consoles
stragomccloud  +   475d ago
@boya
1: Actually PS4/Xbone will not be as capable of what you see here. 2: Obviously you are a console gamer with no understanding of architecture, otherwise you'd understand that the power gap between Wii U and the other next gen consoles is pretty small. Mostly because Wii U is pretty powerful in its own right, but also because the Wii U is pretty much only designed to handle games. Xbone/PS4 have to run video capture services and all sorts of other social networking features which bog down system resources. The end result is actually systems that are capable of producing remarkably similar games.

The problem is, we've been seeing mostly only un optimized ports of older games, and no one not even Nintendo has really produced a game that shows what the system can do. That said, since the Wii U still relies on a more customized power PC architecture that supports some features available in the Power 7 line, and sports a GPU that is customized beyond all recognition, developers will have to learn the programming. It's not as easy as the competition's x86 architecture. Of course what this also means, is that with Wii U, we will see a jump in graphics as time goes on, but we won't with Xbone/PS4 since developers already know all the tricks in the book with x86.

This does not mean in any way that the Wii U will ever have better, or even on par graphics with the Xbone/PS4; it simply means that eventually it'll become so strikingly close, that folks will have trouble telling the difference.

In my opinion, I think the black male character model is the most realistic looking one out the the bunch.
Leio  +   476d ago
What black man ? I only saw 2 women
thekhurg  +   475d ago
Strange, cause every character there was a real person that was 3D scanned. So you're saying the other people weren't even real...
jhoward585  +   475d ago
what I was saying is that the black male character model look more realistic to me visually wise, the skin textures had a lot more imperfection which to my opinion gave it more realism.

The other character models skin texture looked a bit washed out/bland which blurred out the imperfection, the skin tone just didn't have enough color to give it realism.
were one step closer to gaming being taken seriously by the mainstream. if we really hit photo realism& fix the dead eye problem in the next 10years i wouldn't be surprised to see a quality writer & director try their hand at creating at least one video game.
pandehz  +   476d ago
Dead eye problem wont be fixed.

Our eyes are alive because of very very subtle twitches and movements as we think, decide, ponder, excite etc etc

For a dev to actually do that all the time in every conversation and every scene would be a monumental undertaking. They can program a pattern or something to give that feel but never close to real.

We can get close to reality but our eyes will always differentiate between real and unreal.
#16.1 (Edited 476d ago ) | Agree(2) | Disagree(2) | Report | Reply
I don't even know if it's possibly, but i think the next thing they'll do is use motion tracking contact lenses on the voice actors. if something like that worked it could track the voice actors natural eye movements.

Don't be so sure... future brings many wonders, remember the wheel and now time travel um wait... forget that last part, i meant from wheel to bullet train and many more other things :]
aliengmr  +   476d ago
The single hardest thing to animate realistically is the human face. You have to overcome one of the most deeply ingrained instincts we have.

Even if you had the greatest scanner in the world, you're literally still just scratching the surface.

We can get close, but we are a long why off from being totally convincing.
hesido  +   476d ago
I think Eye movement is not super hard to simulate, if you get the pattern right, you're just directing two spheres. But skin over muscle over bone, with skin sliding over muscles, fat tissue and bones, bulging and wrinkling realistically needs immense amount of rigging / computing / datasets. Some of these may be baked according to "skeletal" positions, but when there's interaction by an external force (a cloth pressing on the skin, another character touching the object, you'd need a dynamic solution.)

Also, the animation of the whole body needs to be super fine. No walking against walls for example! We'll see photorealistic games long before life-realistic games.

The Tech video is great, but get real.

PS4 (world's most advanced console) can't even do 1080p or 60fps as a Standard. This gen is still last-gen w/more DLC.

I do hope Sony's Camera has some features/games w/body or face scanning, cuz that's just plain FUN.

KillrateOmega  +   476d ago
Dude, those are the most realistic models that I have ever seen. We still have a ways to go before we could fully animate such models - walking, various body, head, and eye twitches and movements, etc. - while maintaining this level of fidelity, but still breathtaking, nonetheless.

I guess this is what people mean when they talk about games reaching a point of being so realistic that they become scary. Can you imagine if the death animations of them having their throats slit, being shot, or dying in general were equally realistic? Personally, I don't find the concept disturbing, but, you know...
