Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag – Modern Day story rendered Optional

The entire modern day portion of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is optional.

If you have had the chance to play any of the Assassins Creed series, you might have wondered as to how pointless the modern day portion of the game is. And to some extent it may have been annoying for some of the users. (Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

i was thinking they would have created some convoluted series of games to some how end the series but seeing as they went with the cod formula then the modern day portion really is irrelevant
No FanS Land  +   621d ago
official, I'm out of AC. the modern day story is what kept the whole universe relevant. Now it's just a hidden dagger fest set in any era ubi sees fit.
Bathyj  +   621d ago
I always felt like the modern day parts were just filler and I couldnt wait to get back to the past.

Sure it might have given the story some context and an overriding story arc but from a gameplay standpoint it was a snoozefest.
No FanS Land  +   620d ago
it was a snoozefest because ubisoft wanted its consumer to only be hooked to the game's main setting.

I'm pretty sure it's the reason why the modern day moments were passionately boring.
Gildarts  +   620d ago
exactly, what the hell is wrong with ubisoft?

assassins creed is not even assassins creed anymore without the modern day setting. the modern day was the main story. I have the feeling it won't be significant anymore now that it's optional.
xGrunty  +   621d ago
Its because Watch Dogs was there original concept for AC3. I still firmly believe that.
GamingAngelGabriel  +   621d ago
That's definitely a possibility.
wtopez  +   621d ago
I'm personally making this whole series optional. AC3 was soooo boring. They should take a few years off. I'll wait until the 2014 Steam summer sale to get this.
Bathyj  +   621d ago
Agreed. I'm all Assassins Creeded out I think.

Didnt even finish part 3. Traded it back in while it was still worth something and I rarely trade games. I havent been following part 4 at all but they might sneak in a good game under my radar so I'll worry about it once its out.

The only reason I have any hope for it is cos the naval sections of part 3 were the only parts I really enjoyed.
Campy da Camper  +   620d ago
Bath I would be totally with you except for one thing.... The naval battles. Those were so much fun that if the new installment has say, triple the amount of AC3 I am all over it. Heck, they need to make a AC game that is nothing BUT those ship battles.

All I want is a game about ASSASSINATING TARGETS. Is that too much to ask for an Assassin's Creed game?
Dmd  +   621d ago
Assassinating targets using stealth, I'd add.
Bathyj  +   621d ago
And god forbid a stealth game finally gets a crouch/cover button.
Dannycr  +   621d ago
I knew this game was totally unnecessary and just a COD move from ubisoft, but this? There is no reason to play this game at all!
darthkai  +   621d ago
"But for the true fans who love that (modern day) kind of stuff"
I see, so people who just like to explore beautiful 3D renditions of ancient cities, assassinate targets, and immerse themselves in Ezio's story, those are not true fans. Gotcha.
CrossingEden  +   621d ago
the fact that you specifically named ezio's story means no you are not a true fan, because connor and altair were both great characters too
http://thegamingmuse.tumblr...
ezio is a anime male power fantasy by comparison

i wouldn't call connor a great characters he was bitching literally in every scene. altair was good one not great.
generally Ezio>altair>>>> connor
darthkai  +   620d ago
@CrossingEden

Fuck you too. The fact that I named the only story that spanned multiple games and not every single story and character in the franchise makes me not a true fan? So what, I'm not a true fan of something unless every time I mention it I bow down in prayer and mention every single thing I like about it?
Seriously dude get a life.
Bathyj  +   620d ago
Connor was a whinny b*tch. I wanted to slap him.
eXclurel  +   620d ago
Well Connor is always pissed off at everything. Does not think into consequences, just dives in and makes wrong decisions. He does not kill a man because "there was no need" which in return tries to buy his people's lands and killes the ones who refuses. He does not kill Charles Lee when he could just ask a few people where he is and what does he do when he finds him? He does not kill him. He does not even try to kill him. Does not even think of a plot to kill him.

Ezio may be powerful but he was raised as an assassin from birth. he had certain goals. He does not hesitate when something must be done. He understands the weight of taking a life. We wathed him from the beginning of his life to its end. Every second was wonderfull.

I like Ezio because when I play him I always think "Yeah he is cool, he is really cool.". When I play Connor I think "Why is he so pissed? And why the fuck he does not think rationally for a second?". Great character.
Campy da Camper  +   620d ago
I disagree, respectfully. Connor's frontier was badass but he as a character was dull, dimwitted and narcissistic.

Altair, for me, was the best of the bunch.

there you go again, once again wrong,
"named the only story that spanned multiple games"
-altair had a ****load of games that developed his character as well as books, and connor also was in multiple games AS WELL as books
-_- man totally believable that you're a "true" fan after that when you think ezio is the only character who appeared in multiple games
Dmd  +   621d ago
That's good. I always found the modern day segments a snooze fest gameplay wise. I'm not against it at all, I just think modern era story should be cutscenes only.

I think the pieces of eden puzzles from Ac2 and the naval battles from AC3 were the most enjoyable parts of the games. Aside from actual stealth assassinations....er, when did those dissapear, anyway?

The worst? Fricking escort missions. Follow me missions. Oh here is a great battle now stand still and press "x" missions. Ubi has totally taken away what made the series great. Player controlled, stealth assassinations.
hazelamy  +   620d ago
that's what happens when a series turns into an annual franchise.

instead of true innovation, you get "new features"
CNCOMICS  +   621d ago
I'm just waiting for a "modern day" Assassin's Creed.
MrSwankSinatra  +   620d ago
It's called watch dogs
eXclurel  +   620d ago
I just wanted to feel like a part of the assassins guild,

and now we are a pirate with assassin training.
goldwyncq  +   620d ago
I thought the modern day portion of AC3 was well done, much more interesting than the story missions.

Now I wonder who'll we be playing as.
hazelamy  +   620d ago
i'm not sure i'm happy about that.

i mean, as far as the AC universe goes, the majority of the game is just reliving memories, they can't be changed, it's not time travel.

i always thought the series was leading up to a modern day confrontation between the Templars and the Assassins.

but now it seems to be a series of historical adventures, so much so they're even going further back in time for the next adventure.

i expect they'll abandon the modern day portion of the series altogether at some point.

actually now i think about it, they already did in Liberation.
dc786  +   620d ago
Modern day assassins creed was the part which connected both worlds, but its optional so you can play both worlds.
