Touch Arcade: 1001 Attempts [$0.99]. It feels like there are at least that many tries each month by developers to relive the coin-op glory days. Everplay's latest release joins the pack with an elevator pitch that doesn't do it any favors; to give you an idea, it's peppered with phrases like "ENDLESSLY ADDICTIVE GAMEPLAY" and "SIMPLE TO LEARN, TOUGH TO MASTER." Don't let the bombardment of buzzwords stop you from putting four of your quarters in the App Store's money hole, though. You'll quickly forget all about the clichés in your haste to push the retry button for the millionth time. (Disclaimer: your iOS device does not accept real quarters.)

AR: 1001 Attempts is quite the vulgar game. I say this not because of any of the content in it – sure, there’s a little dude who meets their demise by missile, spike, and ghost, but the game itself is inoffensive. The vulgarity comes from when after I think I’m on a good run, when I think I’m about to get that high score, and then suddenly, it’s all yanked out in front of me because I flipped into a laser, or hit a missile, or did something that I thought would keep me alive but really didn’t. I then usually unleash a series of words so vile that I make an angel cry.
GameZebo: You’ve really got to hand it to Spanish developer Cookiebit. This über-small team has only been creating games since the latter part of 2011, but with a knack for subtle simplicity and a unique bent on the greatest elements from gaming past, they’ve put together some of the most addictive mobile and tablet titles in recent memory—just check out the Tetris-esque Gravitron Block if you don’t believe us—And now with the newly released iOS 8-bit spectacular, 1001 Attempts, the boys at Cookiebit are taking game addiction to a whole new level.
