DICE comes clean: what Battlefield 3 got wrong, and how Battlefield 4 fixes it

OXM UK: "Does Battlefield really need a campaign? Going by Battlefield 3's story - a visually splendiferous, but disappointingly cramped and by-the-numbers experience - DICE would do better to chop the feature and redouble the focus on multiplayer. Studio general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson and Battlefield 4 game director Stefan Strandberg insist that they've learned from their blunders, however, and feel the next instalment will put any doubts about DICE's single player panache to rest."

It's nice that they admitted that BF3's singleplayer wasn't that great.

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF4053d ago

Yep. Now it's time for BF fanboys to do the same.

RioKing4053d ago (Edited 4053d ago )

I've personally never played Battlefield until BF3 and I enjoyed the single player alot. It seemed more realistic and slower paced than cod. The story was meh, but the way the gameplay was was still very appealing to me..

thechosenone4053d ago (Edited 4053d ago )

I just hope BF4's MP doesn't suffer from the same issues that BF3 did the first 8 months of its life.

I want larger freaking maps, the bigger the better and vehicles, lots and lots of vehicles. :3

@midnlghter

it was a rushed POC that was pushed out just to get the jump on COD. They did fix most of the bugs towards the end but f*** what a waste. I'll hold off on pre-ordering this time around and wait for community feedback.

1886afc4053d ago

I can honestly say that I didn't even play the single player. Bf is known for multiplayer.

"I want larger freaking maps, the bigger the better and vehicles, lots and lots of vehicles."

On PC sure, but please not on consoles. The already present excessive number of vehicles and 24 player limit in BF3 kills the most of the chance of actually have a fire fight on the ground. Jets should have been PC exclusive, just look at the state of Gulf of Oman on console

Triggytrolls4053d ago

I played a couple of missions and then my data corrupted so I didn't bother going back

Too Cod-ie. Not enough like Battlefield.

Eldyraen4053d ago

I actually think BFBC1 had the most 'Battlefield' campaign as many levels were more open and left room to explore or take a slightly different approach (more often). Both BC2 and BF3 were more narrowly focused which felt more CoDish in comparison. The characters were not exactly what I was expecting (although it suited the name/story perfectly) from a Battlefield game but overall Bad Company games have had much better campaigns imo.

Since DICE seems to be accepting some of their campaign issues for 3 and wanting to make a better campaign I hope they add a few more open levels again. Large scripted segments have their place but sometimes its the more open ended gameplay areas that are the most enjoyable.

I also wouldn't mind a less disjointed story as I prefer a story that flows a little better. BF3 didn't have the worst campaign I've ever played but the way the story was presented was the weakest point and a few areas felt a little off compared to others. I just hope they looked at Bad Company just a bit more than CoD or BF3 in the long run (but likely with a more serious theme/cast of characters).

BF4's video though looked to be a decent variety of gameplay (from a single level) and hoping the story progresses a bit more linearly in comparison to 3 (in the sense the story doesn't need to cut from one area to the next and back again off and on).

FantasyStar4053d ago

Why is DICE focusing on things that are unimportant to the market they're targeting? I'd like a good SP as much as anyone else, but the people that mainly play BF3 or any CoD are in it for the MP most of all.

Gh05t4053d ago

This looks semi optimistic. As a person who does not play FPS single player campaigns for the sheer fact that it is so unrealistic, tied down, single path (or maybe multi-path but not free roaming) that it really doesn't work for me. If they try to improve on the flexibility of choice to accomplish a mission and ability to change paths if something doesn't work out. I would love a game like battlefield with missions as flexible as sandbox games (Not open world but open mission areas

I will have to try the campaign and see how they have "Improved".

Hufandpuf4053d ago

DICE did omit a few parts of the mission for times sake, but it does seem to give you some flexibility.

seanpitt234053d ago

I would put all their effort in the multiplayer and scrap the single player campaign all together that's where people spend 1000s of hours playing infact I didn't even finish BF3 campaign I just got bored with it but logged 100 of hours on the mp side

Battlefield 1, Hardline, BF4 Servers Are Being Taken Offline by Cheaters; EA Silent on Issue

Cheaters & hackers have been causing grief on Battlefield 1, Hardline & BF4 servers, with nonstop DDoS attacks among other things. Unfortunately, EA has remained silent about it.

-Foxtrot766d ago

Course they are silent, they are hoping people flock to 2042

gamesftw250765d ago

Maybe it was a inside job then haha.

jeromeface764d ago

wouldnt be the first time, titanfall 1+2 anyone?

PapaBop765d ago

Not even if they paid me.. EA always do this with old games with less money potential, if this was Ultimate Team, they'd address and sort it faster than stories could spread. Why invest time in their products when they will just dump it in the following years? Then again EA never could see the forest for the trees.

Inverno765d ago

I imagine after those games were given out for free a couple months back through Amazon, anything that makes people go to 2042 is a plus for them

XiNatsuDragnel765d ago

They want people to go on 2042. My theory

excaliburps765d ago

Nah. I think they can't do anything about it or they want to sink money into fixing it.

Pudge102888765d ago (Edited 765d ago )

EA owns all BF servers so yes, they can do something about it but they refuse to because they dont want ppl playing their old games instead of the new one. Its EA we’re talking about here

pr33k33765d ago

if this happened in 2042, they'd have something to say. which is weird, considering battlefield 1 has more players on steam right now.

Pudge102888765d ago

Its so obvious that EA is doing this or hired ppl to mess up the games so that we’d be forced to have just 1 Battlefield working.

FPS_D3TH765d ago

Honestly it’s probably the devs themselves. They did an update to bf4 way back that kinda made assault rifles doo doo in hopes that people would flock to BF1 cuz BF4 was too perfect

There's a bunch of great shooters on gamepass; both legacy and new.

A recommendation I have is a work in progress preview title called Anacrusis. It's a lot of fun, and has a cool aesthetic.
