Open World on the Small Screen
A quick perusal of the Play Store reveals a massive, varied selection of role-playing games ranging from Social RPGs to Rogue-likes; from Japanese-RPGs to dungeon crawlers. But a real open-world RPG? That’s a rare sight indeed. Crescent Moon’s Aralon attempts to bring the feel of games like Gothic and Elder Scrolls to our phones, and succeeds in a way no other game has so far. Mobile gaming has a long way to go before we have our own Skyrim, but Aralon is an important first step.
TouchArcade: There are a lot of great things about living in the totally digital world of the App Store. For one, you can magically beam new games and apps right out of thin air and onto your device without having to get off your lazy butt and drive to some store. However, while being lazy is great, an even bigger bonus to the App Store is the ability for developers to offer content and bug fix updates for months and even years after a game is initially released. Back in the day if you bought a game for your console that had a critical bug in it, you were pretty much stuck with it, and new content typically meant waiting for a sequel. That's not how we roll anymore. With that, here's a look at some of the best updates we saw this year.
Humble Mobile Bundle 5 features two of the best Android games to date, The Room Two and The Cave. It also includes retro shooter, R-Type II, the perplexing produce puzzler, Bag It!, and the monumental role-playing game, Aralon: Sword and Shadow and the tile-based board game, Carcassonne.
So many of good games for the phone, I've already run out of storage space on my device :(
Time to get a bigger flash disk!
Grab It Magazine has details of even more games going on sale on the App Store for the weekend.
I can't believe that Oquonie is free. It only just came out and it is totally awesome. A must buy really!
Thanks for the recommendation. Definitely will give it a try :)
I worry that games like this will lag on a phone. Does it access a server or do you download the whole thing?
Aha, finally a decent take on mobile games where they only sacrificed what they had to and didn't just make something they knew was boring from the off.
Definitely a great title. :) I haven't touched it in a LONG time though. It's note quite an Elder Scrolls game, but then again, few games are. Definitely worth a try though. ;)
I don't get it. Is this really a smartphone/tablet game? I mean where are the angry birds and thieving piggies lol
Seriously, ever since getting a tablet a little over a year ago I've been amazed at the wide array of games available. Yes there are lots of "casual" games but there are a growing number of games that would not be out of place on the Vita or 3DS. Bards Tale is another fine example.
One thing is for sure is that gamers are certainly spoilt for choice.
