While the soundtracks for the Assassin's Creed series are good, they're missing out by not having a main recurring theme.
Personally I disagree. I think the great thing about Kyd's work is how different so much of it is. The music from AC compared to that of ACII and AC:B is so different and great because of it. I get the point that having a similar recurring theme or melody connects things together, but they don't need to be connected together. Assassin's Creed has some wonderful Eastern themes, and ACII and Brotherhood have some beautiful Mediterranean-styled themes, while ACIII (under Balfe) has a more direct, loud and emphatic approach, something you'd expect from a game focused on the British-American war. (I really diskliked Revelation's soundtrack personally and didn't like reading that Balfe would take charge solely of ACIII's score, but he did a much better job in fairness to him. Only thing for me is that there's no track that really stands out, and few that really bring things together. Assassin's Creed had Access The Animus, ACII had Earth, and AC:B had City of Rome [I don't even count Revelations, I just can't stand that game]).
Not sure why AC3 ost wasn't given to Jesper Kyd. His Assassin's Creed music had soul to it. Lorne Balfe's soundtrack for AC3 felt quite generic. Ah well, I hope he returns for AC4.
I also didn't like the AC3 soundtrack. The main theme was quite good, but the rest were sub-par. Shame. Let's hope Jesper Kyd comes back next time.
I was about to say the same thing It was like something you would hear in a Hollywood movie. Even the theme song which you hear in the titles, you can't beat the theme in AC2 (Ezios Family/Earth) and Revealtions main title theme You would think "Oh AC3, big new game, bigger engine, last game in trilogy....oh I know lets NOT get the main composer to return and hand it off to some unknown" I think Ubisoft are becoming cheap
It was sick and wrong of them to suddenly kick and replace a long time contributer to the series. I didnt like AC3 soundtrack as much as I had hoped either. Wonder if Kyd's willing to come back after being tossed aside like last nights dinner.
Well Lorne Balfe's not exactly an unknown, and he did do like half the soundtrack to Revelations. But yeah, they shouldn't have lost Kyd.
It appears Jesper Kyd was working on the soundtracks of 3 other games in 2012. Maybe that explains why.
They do all have a main theme, it's just a different one for each game. I dunno I think the music's pretty great overall. Losing Kyd wasn't a great idea though, Lorne Balfe seems only to be able to make big orchestral numbers.
