I had some hands on time with this the other week, I like hold they've mixed things up with different vehicles types during play that actually makes a difference to how the race unfolds, where as Mario Kart 7 was a little bit of a cosmetic, minor alteration in places.

It'll be interesting to see how the Wii U version stacks up, especially in terms of online modes and the use of the second screen.
