Object Permanence: Dumbing Down Dark Souls?

Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed in a recent interview that he's considering implementing an easier difficulty in future Souls games. Is this a good idea? Absolutely not, but not for the reasons you'd think. Rant Gaming's B.A. Campbell explains what object permanence has to do with difficulty, satisfaction, and immersion.

They would not be "Dumbing" it down. Just adding an easy mode, The gameplay should be unchanged by an option that you can choose not to use.

The issue is not really about the difficulty. It is about Miyazaki's design vision--the philosophy BEHIND the difficulty. I'm not really concerned about the hardcore gamers who'd get butthurt because a gentler difficulty option exists, but I am concerned about the gamers who refuse to even try the game because it has a reputation as "crushingly hard," and the gamers who perpetuate that stereotype. Implementing an easy mode would be like Miyazaki officially acknowledging that he is unable to, in his own words, "carefully send all gamers the message behind our difficult games."

It is rather ridiculous that such a great game gets labeled "Too Hard to Try". People not playing it out of fear of failure is pretty disappointing. I don't really even find it that difficult. It's simple trial and error. Just like life.

It's sad when companies have to create an easier experience because of people used to their hands being held

I’m Glad Atlus & SE Changed Dates To Avoid Competing With Shadow Of The Erdtree

Saad from eXputer: "I'm glad I don't have to choose between Square Enix, Atlus, and FromSoftware due to bad release windows and Shadow of the Erdtree."

More intelligent than guerilla games

Atlus is releasing their game one week before Erdtree, SE is releasing theirs one week after.

HZD released four days before Zelda, HFW released one week before Elden Ring.

It seems to me like they are still releasing their games too close to Erdtree.

What a word vomit, rambling, turd of an article that simply states the obvious. Classic exputer.

I Wish More Games Embraced FromSoft's Approach To Difficulty

Danish from eXputer: "FromSoftware's unique approach to difficulty in their games allows players to customize their own experience, which is really cool."

"Souls Like" is a literal genre.

I'd just like to point out that Rise of the Ronin which recently released is in large part a Souls Like as is the upcoming Stellar Blade. And both games have 60 FPS.

ShwaaMan26d ago

More? Like every other game in the last
5 years has “Souls” elements or difficulty. I think we need to pump the brakes a bit Jesus they don’t all the the “grind or die”/“get good” mentality.

I would advise reading the article. What you're saying is not the point we tried to make.

Yeah let’s have only souls likes 🙄
