Before Gears of War: Judgment even arrived there were two distinctive camps: those offering unconditional support for the franchise and those who already considered this prequel little more than a cash cow. These two audiences have already made up their mind, and surely the former will be enough to ensure the videogame’s profitability, but what remains is the less vocal populace; those who quietly sit on the fence.
Gears of War: Judgment launched 10 years ago today, and quickly became one of the most misunderstood titles in the series.
Easily the best control-wise of the series. Judgment introduced melee-ing with the lancer and is still the only installment of the series (to date) which enables you to change weapons while roadie running simultaneously.
Gears 2&5 are the worst controlling in the series.
The Arcady aspects of the campaign should have been unlocked after completing a campaign play through. Seeing score screen after battles caused awkward pacing. The multiplayer was too different from other Gears games.
Judgment felt more like an expansion than an actually game. To me, I was fatigued from the series at that point. The story was ok, over all it wasn’t bad.
The Gears of War series has been a consistent deliverer of quality for Xbox, but which games are the best?
Gears of War is my favorite video game franchise, and the Locust is my all-time favorite faction.
My rank list:
1. Gears of War 2
2. Gears of War 3
3. Gears of War 1
4. Gears of War 4
5. Gears of War 5
6. Gears of War Judgment (No Locust in multiplayer was a disgrace)
2 is still my favorite but 5 is also up there (for me). Then I'd say 1, 3, 4 and Judgement. Tactics isnt the same type of game, so it seems odd to rank it among TPS when its a strategy game. So I make that one all its own. Pretty fun game too.
The first is and has always been the best one imo - the story, the levels, the set pieces, the soundtrack - as close to perfect as a campaign can get.
I’d say the series had been on a continual downhill slide until 5.

Judgement
I love the series as a whole, but 4 was pretty by the numbers, and Judgement was just ok.
I played them all since picking up a Series X about 7 months ago. Personally, I don't think time has been kind to the earlier games and they feel very slow and repetitive to play. Whilst the newer games may be prettier, they stick with the original gameplay mechanics too much in my view so as a whole series of titles, I think they are pretty average games.
Not to say they weren't fun and I have a lot of nostalgia for 1 and 2, I just think there are far better action games out there.
What's the best Gears of War game for players? Where to start? This guide should easily lend a hand.
Gears 1 and 2 will always be my favorite Gears titles. The scene where Dom find his wife and then has to shoot her was an epic scene.
My favorite Gears game list
1. Gears 2
2. Gears 3
3. Gears 1
4. Gears 4
5. Gears 5
6. Gears Judgement
Gears Of War is my favorite video game franchise. I can’t imagine how Gears 6 will look in UE5 after watching Hellblade 2 gameplay trailer
One of the reasons why i got the series x. Been fan since the first game.
Played them all recently on gamepass. Great games. But my favorites gotta be gears tactics. Don’t know why. I just had a blast with it lol
There are things about the game I like and things I don't like (only played it for about 2-3 hours so far), but it's still a good Gears game. I agree with a score of 7. I don't, however, agree with the way this article breaks it down. Also, it's rather poorly written.
Haven't played the game yet, but I see the same thing happening with the new God of War game, also a prequel. For some reason these games get lower scores, get marked down for being more of the same, unnessesary, even a cash cow.
Imo that isn't fair. These aren't franchises with a new game every year (and get away with it) and certainly not cash cows. Last Gears game was at least one and a half years ago, last game with Kratos even three years, and both games look to me as great new games for the fans to enjoy, both Epic and Santa Monica put a lot of effort in it. Imo the same can not be said about the next CoD, yet those yearly outings usually get a free pass in the press.
I'm enjoying the hell out of Ascencion and I'm sure Gears fans will do the same with Judgement.
I'm buying it as a Gears fan. I've been playing the multiplayer demo and although I don't think it's as good as 3 so far, I've still been enjoying it.
I think the SP is very fun w/friends and the MP is the most enjoyable since gears 1. Overrun is a breath of fresh and then there are little things like this:
