A good game that's free?

As a matter of fact, yes! Wii Sports is a game that comes with any new Wii that you buy, and it does a great job of introducing, and getting you hooked, on the many new innovations that Wii has to offer.

Gameplay
When I first bought my Wii, I must've spent 30 hours straight playing Wii Sports non-stop (not joking here), and it's not hard to see why. Wii Sports is possibly the newest and most original game since when Mario Bros. saved the game industry 23 years ago. Let me break down the game modes, first.

Tennis
Tennis is a 2-on-2 match on a tennis court. It's 1-4 player, and it turns your Wii Remote into a Tennis Racket by having you swing the Wii remote to swing the Tennis Racket on screen. I never did like tennis, so I don't play this one much. It's still good fun, though.

Golf
Golf is one of the harder games to learn and master. It works just like real Golf: you try to get the ball in the hole in less than the amount of strokes allowed. The fewer strokes you use, the lower your score (low scores are good in Golf). Timing your swing is completely different in Wii Sports than in most golf games. In Wii Sports, you just have to swing for power without going over the power meter. While I do enjoy swinging the Remote like a Golf Club, it is far too oversensitive, and will most likely lead you to overpowered and inaccurate shots until you get the hang of it. But once you figure it out, Golf is pretty fun.

Bowling
My second favorite sport on this game is Bowling. To play, you just swing the Remote like you would with a Bowling Ball (Do NOT let go). The rules are just like regular Bowling, so no suprises. My throws always curve right for some reason. It's 1-4 Players.

Baseball
The Baseball on here is kind of lame, to be honest. All you do is swing the bat or pitch the ball (Outfielders move on their own). To swing, just swing the Remote like a Baseball bat and to Throw, do a throwing motion with the Wii Remote (again, do NOT let go!). The rules are the same as normal Baseball except that there's only 3 innings instead of 9. It's 1-2 players.

Boxing
The only game on here that uses the Nunchuk, Boxing has you doing punching motions with the Wii Remote to knockout your opponent. The game lasts for 3 2minute matchs or until someone's knocked out.

Cool game, huh? There's also Training modes (which are like minigames) and the Wii Fitness Test (Similar to Brain Age's Brain test). I also should mention that you use Miis to play the sports and in order to record your progress you must make your own Mii from the Wii menu.

Graphics
The graphics have their moments. The Golf courses and Bowling Alleys look great. But most of the time it's just average (the audience for Baseball is just a bunch of circles. lol). It won't blow you away, but it doesn't hurt to look at, either.

Sound
The sound is too basic. The music is on the weak side, and when your playing the sports there's no music at all (except for Bowling).

Controls
The controls are simple and responsive. The motion controls are a great addition and really help bring the sports to life.

Overall
Wii Sports probably won't win any awards, but for $0, it's the best freebie you'll ever get :)

Score
9.5
Graphics
It's new and very imaginitave.
6.5
Sound
The graphics aren't good, but not bad. They're just okay.
5.0
Gameplay
There's barely music, and the sounds coming out of the speaker sound bad, too.
9.2
Fun Factor
Great fun alone or with friends.
Overall
8.0

Man!

My throws in bowling hook to the right too. No matter how straight I think I'm swinging my arm it still hooks right.

I wonder if it is because I set my throw as left handed and that is a natural hook to it for the game mechanics?

TheDeadMetalhead5814d ago

...because I'm left-handed too! It's okay, though, because I've learned to use it to my advantage. Heh heh heh.

Switch Sports Will Never Live Up To Wii Sports

The Switch just isn't equipped for a killer sports title like the Wii was

A lot of the points made here are true, yet let's give it a chance, because like the author said, the Wii was a motion control console and everyone did view it as such while the switch is not, so the way people view the game determines how much they invested in it, so again let's give it a chance and see

Ratty808d ago

Wii sports was truly atrocious and you're saying Switch Sports will be even worse? It does not bode well for Switch Sports indeed.

Fntastic808d ago

Wii Sports was ok for screwing around, but the games lacked depth. Also I'm not sure why it seems like they decided to stick with the automatic player movement so all you need to do is swing to hit something. Very noob friendly but not as much fun IMO.

Wii Sports was THE game for casuals. I don’t feel many casuals own the Switch. I can’t see this doing the numbers Wii Sports did.

Einhander1971807d ago

Course it won't, the Wii was a phenomenon. Something new with the motion tech. A curiosity to almost everyone. Obviously Switch sports won't create the same impact.

Because we all miss accidentally throwing our Wiimotes at the TV, so let's throw some Joy-Cons.

Neonridr839d ago

VR is the same way, wrist straps for a reason.

Neonridr839d ago

I loved the golf from Wii Sports Resort.

Cuzizkool838d ago

I was always confused by Nintendo’s decision to kill the franchise. “Super” stayed with Mario titles even after the Super Nintendo. They can still use the Wii name. Hell it’s been so long that releasing a new one, or even an HD remaster, will tap into that nostalgia market.

DazaMc838d ago

Super Mario launched on the NES not the Super NES.

septemberindecember837d ago

Super was never because of the Super Nintendo. Super Mario Bros launched on the NES. The Super is because it's an indirect sequel to Mario Bros.

They can just call it Nintendo Sports or something, but using the Wii name would be a bit confusing.

Bigman4k838d ago

Yeah i agree but i don't think Nintendo will be bringing wii sports to the Nintendo Switch samething goes for diddykong racing

Missing Spider-Man: Miles Morales for PS5 in this list. Love this game!

Orchard1147d ago

They probably didn't include it (and a bunch of others) because of their criteria for "lasting influence on the industry".

SMMM is a good game, but it doesn't stand out enough to have THAT huge of an impact on the industry as a whole - especially when compared to games like Mario, Halo & Tetris.

Sonic-and-Crash1147d ago (Edited 1147d ago )

i would also add Sonic and Crash (pun intended lol) ...Sonic 1 on MD is a all time classic game that helped MegaDrive to separate itself and explode in sales... also Crash Bandicoot ...while not exactly a launch game..it was pretty close to launch for PS1 (in Europe was almost a launch game as PS1 released later here) and trademarked the start of PS era

Orchard1147d ago

Totally agree - those two games were huge for the industry & direction of platformers.

p.s. love the irony of your name for this post :P

jaymacx1147d ago

Sonic was not a launch game. I keep seeing people say it was, but maybe they were so young it’s when they got the console. Crash bandicoot definitely wasn’t even close to being a launch game . These games are system sellers though.

septemberindecember1147d ago

@Sonic-and-Crash

Neither Sonic nor Crash released anywhere close to the launch of their respective consoles. Crash released a full year after the western launch of the PS1 (and two full years after Japan's launch), and Sonic released two years after Genesis in US, and a year after Mega Drive in PAL regions.

CorndogBurglar1147d ago

I knoe it wasn't a massive influence on the industry, but Condemned: Criminal Origins on Xbox 360 is one of my all time favorite launch games.

Ok you love it, and that's great but I think you are missing the point of the article... In any case to judge something like this I think you need time, currently we can see the tree but not the forest

darthv721147d ago

Soul Calibur... that game still holds up to this day. Such an excellent game.

jgilbert111147d ago

That game has aged like a fine wine. Still go back to it all the time on my Dreamcast.

Minute Man 7211147d ago

I should have never sold my Dreamcast

ZeekQuattro1147d ago

Mitsurugi was seriously wounded but the soul still burns.

Orchard1147d ago

Super Mario 64 + Halo were my favorite launch games - outstanding games.

Shuckylad1147d ago

Super Mario World SNES
Mario 64 N64
Halo Xbox
Motorstorm Ps3
Zelda BOTW switch

The Wood1147d ago

Motor storm. . . Yeah. . Underrated

Jericho13371147d ago

Not a launch title though.

Omegasyde1147d ago

In USA not a launch title but yes in EU etc.

frostypants1147d ago

Super Mario World is still my my favorite of all Mario games and in the discussion for best side scroller ever.
