Anarchy Reigns isn't out in North America yet but I managed to get my hands on a Japanese copy. After everything was it really worth the import.
Singleplayer: Going into Anarchy Reigns single player I did not have very high hopes but the story pleasantly suprised me. While it will not be the next uncharted the story is better than you might expect for a beat em up fighter. Unfortunately that is not enough to save it from the linear "free missions" that lay within. There are two sides to the story. One where you play as Lea (White Side) and Jack (Black Side) each side of this story is giving a different perspective on the common goal. Capture Max Caxton. In both stories you will do "free missions" which consist of fighting the same "kill seekers" or mutants until you gain enough points to do a story mission. These free missions are boring and really take away from the over-all experience because they are the same a lot of the time and just end up wasting your time. However the story missions are fairly nice after a lame free mission. Story missions are basically boss battles or at least a mission that seems to have a purpose and adds something to the story. Fighting other characters in story missions is a nice way to figure out little strategies and hone your skills for online battles. Although since you can only chose from two characters it gets old after doing four or so. A plus side is once you fight a character in story mode you unlock them. Which is much easier than leveling up online. Another plus side to story is the graphics are nice and cutscenes are gorgeous. Over-all story is a fairly satisfying experience. If you can make it past the linear free missions and always being the same character you will enjoy the campeign.
Multiplayer: Have you ever wanted to engage in an absolutly crazy online match against 15 other fighters. Well now your can. Anarchy Reigns multiplayer is full of different modes from team deathmatch to some sort of football type game. It also had a healthy amount of unique characters to chose from. Going online before playing story is a horrible idea unless you want to get your ass handed to you. Leveling up is difficult and other online players will be better than you. First of all I want to say Anarchy Reigns soundtrack is amazing and I love almost every song included. Now once you have unlocked all the characters picked a favorite and gotten a few combos you are ready to go online. Of course the first few matchs you are going to lose but after around three you will have learned the basics of online play. Each character plays differently and their are clearly some characters that are better than others including the characters that have unlimited combos which take away from the online experience. Play against people that have huge combos that almost kill you is very agrivating. The combat is not extremely deep and can be figured out in a couple of days. Although its still fun just to run wild. The graphics and stages are also nice. Plus stages are huge and full of cool things plus the stages in Anarchy Reigns have little things happen to them such as a black hole or poisonous gas. While this seems cool and keeps things fresh for a while once you have seen everything it just becomes annoying. The scoring in multiplayer is also aggravating. Having way more kills than everybody and than dying only to lose 20 percent of your points is very very annoying. Or even when somebody finds an item (which are way over powered) and kills you with it, you will get angry.
Overall: While Anarchy Reigns might not have a very deep combat system or super fun story it does succeed in being a light hearted beat em up that has tons of replay value even if it will make you want to cry when you play online for the first time.
A recent wave of modern brawlers have exploded onto the scene, and it feels like they owe Anarchy Reigns some gratitude.
Jerry from BagoGames says, "With Astral Chain coming out right around the corner for the Nintendo Switch, I couldn’t help but think about all the amazing games PlatinumGames has pumped out over the years. Some revered greatly, others panned by critics, but to me insane infatuation. These are my five favorite games from my favorite developer"
After the cancellation of Scalebound, Platinum Games seems doomed to collapse. But can they find retribution on the horizon?
'Doomed to collapse'.
Haha. Much drama... they expect people to read this s***?
Good write up, but your second sentence confuses me. Are you asking a question or did you mean "it was" instead of "was it?" If you could fix that up so it is less confusing it would make it a really good and well written review.
Sorry man it was a question accidentally put a period instead of a question mark
