What’s Next for First-Person Shooters?

"The modern war shooter was one of the defining genres of the seventh generation (2005-2013) of video games. After the success of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, hardly a month passed without the release of at least one shooter starring a soldier battling terrorists, Russians, or terroristic Russians in today’s world. This saturation, as well as the incredibly derivative visual and gameplay mechanics the games employ, has led to a backlash among some gamers against the genre. This backlash closely mirrors the backlash against World War II shooters, such as Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Call of Duty, during the transition from sixth generation to the seventh. What’s the connection between these backlashes, and what lies ahead for the venerable first person shooter genre? We have a few guesses." - Jake Petersen of Geekenstein.com

What's next? Same shit, different toilet.. Old stagnant series like COD are still getting the biggest sales, with the least effort from developers.

Need to scrap all this bro! murrica! hooorahh United Tankmen of America BS, and come up with some original concepts.

malokevi3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

Titanfall, Battlefield 5, Sunset Overdrive and Halo 5 jump immediately to mind. Also, the redemption of Call of Duty (true next gen, 64+ players).

All these things would make me happy.

edit: crap, and Destiny. How could I forget?

GarrusVakarian3794d ago

64 player CoD does not sound good at all. It's not the kind of shooter that requires that many players.

malokevi3794d ago (Edited 3794d ago )

Bigger stages, more players, sounds like a ball to me. I guess that's an opinion. But, when I think war, I think WAR! COD as it stands is like a paintball skirmish.

edit: actually, I've been part of way bigger paintball skirmishes. Speedball, more like it.

" Also, the redemption of Call of Duty (true next gen, 64+ players)"

Also I don't think we will be seeing this anytime soon based on the latest comments by Activision's CEO.

noctis_lumia3787d ago

destiny will rape all these shooters u mention

On the PC side.......

We have great FPS to look forward to like:

Firefall = FPS tactical eSport MMO
Survarium = FPS-RPG MMO
Hawken = FPS Mech
Red Orchestra 2 New DLC = Tactical WWII FPS
Arma 3 DLC and Expansions = FPS Simulator
Dayz Stand Alone = FPS Survival Horror Simulator
many more.

Firefall is in Beta and the MP mode is fantastic and a eSport while the MMO mode is still being improved.

Survarium is made by the Old STALKER team and it looks and feels like STALKER burt with a better MP mode, I'm hoping to get into the upcoming Beta.

Hawken = I'm in the closed beta and the open beta is Dec 12, Hawken is a FAST, Tactical, FPS Mech game with one map having destruction with many more to come along side many non destructive maps.

Red Orchestra 2 DLC = more DLC to come in 2014 and RO2 is just flat out a brutal game of Tactics and realism

Arma III DLC = Arma III pretty much nothing is better than this REALISTIC WAR Simulator.

DayZ Stand Alone = our favorite FPS survival horror mod will have it's stand alone released in 2014 with lots of fixes and gameplay increases.

Why MW 2019 is still the best looking Call of Duty to date

MW 2019 is five years old at this point and on previous gen hardware, but it is still the best looking Call of Duty game to date.

MW was an excellent videogame. They messed up Spec Ops big time, but aside from this it was a huge step in the right direction initially. Most notably, at launch it seemed to come from a very cohesive creative vision that was felt across gameplay, to story to art style/visual direction. It was also very notably written by prominent ex-Naughty Dog guys that quit almost immediately before release.

That COMPLETELY dissolved through post-launch content and the full pivot to a "cross-mode" narrative that completely obliterated the cohesion in overall story direction. Warzone then "became" the new face of Call of Duty and the franchise completely removed itself from anything remotely creatively "good". It is a pure money machine, so I kinda get why they're doing it....but I personally completely lost interest.

I would love to see Infinity Ward move off CoD and get to make their own product with full control. They clearly have some massive talent in their ranks but it's perverted by Activision's corporate interests.

I really hope we get other activision games on GP soon. My dream would be Scarface but I know the license probably expired

P_Bomb284d ago

Love me some Scarface! I even bought the comics. Yeah, licensing would probably be an impasse.

4Sh0w284d ago

hmmm, coincidence? Either way this is a good sign for gamers after the ABK deal.

porkChop284d ago

I played through Scarface again last year and it still holds up. Such a fun game. I would love for Xbox to get the rights back to remaster Scarface and make a sequel. It sold well and they had plans for Scarface 2, 3, and 4. With how long it takes Rockstar to make games the market is wide open.

TheColbertinator284d ago

That game was so much fun. Expected a cheap GTA clone but it was a good drug empire building game.

shinoff2183284d ago

They didn't just have plans but there's actual gameplay out there for scarface 2

neutralgamer1992284d ago

Seriously man we need games like

True crime
Sleeping dogs
Watch dogs( more like original not legion)
And proper saints row

GTA can’t be the only option we need other games

P_Bomb284d ago

@neutral
Gun was Activision as well. Nice open world Wild West there imo.

neutralgamer1992282d ago

Gun is such a underrated game

None of those games had dedicated servers on console in the first place? Were always player hosted. Did something change?

Rutaprkl283d ago

Older cods like Mw, Mw2 and WaW were way better than Call of Dutys nowadays

GoodGuy09283d ago

Make activision remaster mw2 (2009) multiplayer please xbox.
