PS4 vs. Xbox One: Lets Get Real

The fanboys hat full force on the which nex-gen consoles is "better" from hardware to pixels every angle has been explored, exploited and debated.

But the bottom line, no matter which comparsion standard you use, is that the console is only as good as the games that are available for it.

The fact is that while both the PS4 and Xbox One are seemingly great consoles with the ability to have epic games up and running on each, the aren't delivering much at the moment.

The games available now on both consoles, you can find for on other systems at a much cheaper price tag. The small boost in graphics on the Xbox One isn't quite yet worth the console and game price tag of $560.

Gamers buying the PS4 will give Sony $400 and get access to three mediocre games - Killzone: Shadowfall, Knack, Resogun. The first two games have been chalked up as a loss thus far by the majority of critics.

The Xbox One launch was a tad more successful in regards to the exclusive games offered. But the gameplay hasn't improved, just the graphics and if only slightly compared to the 360.

Forza Motorsport 5: Same tired racing game just more handsome. Dead Rising 3: Improved visually, but just another sandbox-type zombie slaying scenario that gets old quick much like Dead Island.

Ryse: Stunning graphics but this gladiator hack-and-slash offers nothing new in terms of gameplay.

Fans are being asked by Microsoft and Sony to invest in a hope that the publishers will deliver on the promises they have made in regards to the advanced abilities and future functionality features that are said to be inside these nex-gen consoles.

The real question lies within the gaming culture: have these companies demonstrated that they deserve this quite expensive blind trust from their fans?

Sure being part of the "next big thing" in technology advancement is exciting, but does it have to be so expensive?

Sony launched the PS4, its most significant product in the past decade with "Killzone" a title that amazes some that is even still around. But the mere fact that "Killzone" was a launch title shows the lack of creative growth within the industry in general.

It's inevitable that in another decade both Sony and Microsoft will again launch new consoles with an even higher resolution, but will either deliver a truly cutting edge gameplay experience now or then? That remains to be seen.

I stopped reading when the guy called Killzone and Resogun "mediocre"

dsswoosh3799d ago

Totally agree.

Killzone is just flat out bad.

MacDonagh3797d ago

They aren't interesting in any way though. Resogun is basically a Defender HD remix and Killzone Shadowfall is nothing more than a tech demo tied to the current gen mentality of previous shooters.

It deserved every above average score that it got.

Excellent piece.

Having a "super-powerful console" is nice; but it really doesn't matter to me, personally, how beautiful a game is, or how powerful the console the game is running on is. A game, like a woman, can look beautiful, but if at it's core (her personality); it's ugly (boring, buggy, microtransactions) - then it's a bad game.

Likewise, if that's all the super-powerful console has is pretty games, but nothing of any true entertainment; I'm not shelling out hundreds of dollars for it.

Besides, it really doesn't matter how powerful a console is; what matters is the games. That's why it's called a VIDEO-GAME console.

Silly blog post. Written by someone who clearly has no consciousness what is going on around him or what happened in the past.

Console is an investment. Buying it now or one year from now really makes no difference. Price won't change and if it does it won't be for 100 USD/euro(lol at those who expect this). Is it really worth skipping on a console to save 50 bucks or 100 TWO years from now? lol no. This sort of rant reminds me of people that have been waiting for 99usd PS3 to jump in (ha) and since it never happened they missed on incredible games, and their life experience is poorer because of it. You can't stop time and relive those 6-7 years.

Since console is an investment, buy it now if you can. One year from now price will be the same, and you most likely will be running late and your backlog is too big at that point.

Games being mediocre is subjective. Some people love Ryse and Knack. Just because some cynical journalist told you they suck, doesn't make it so. Hell even I from watching Ryse stream for few hours think it's trash, but who am I to tell to other what they should be permitted to liKe? if they like it, awesome.

Just thinking of playing The Order, Infamous SS, Uncharted, Destiny etc make my penis wanna burst.
I am sure x1 give same reaction to people that like it's IPs.
So to sum it up.This blog post is what I hate about this industry. Just one more cynical gamer that has no self respect for the industry that has given us so much.

Launch game not being anything mind blowing is fine, it's always been like that.
Since I called it an investment, I know its a smart one. Potential of this new machines is incredible. You will learn that in next 12 months.
BTW - you can also play multiplaform games on your new machines, not just "exclusives". Play aC4 on PS4 after patch it looks of the chains. You will never turn your PS3 again.

@Vojkan "Console is an investment. Buying it now or one year from now really makes no difference. Price won't change and if it does it won't be for 100 USD/euro(lol at those who expect this)."

Really? The last time I heard of a console being an investment was at the PS3 2006 E3 conference after which Sony struggled to find their market for 2-3 years afterwards because the cost of the machines were too high for the common consumer and also too high to manufacture for Sony. The only investment that a person makes is an emotional one due to brand loyalty. An actual investment would be buying shares in a company while a consumer spends money on a console counts as an expenditure. Much like buying any electronic device or paying a bill for an internet connection.

"This sort of rant reminds me of people that have been waiting for 99usd PS3 to jump in (ha) and since it never happened they missed on incredible games, and their life experience is poorer because of it. You can't stop time and relive those 6-7 years."

Both PS4 and Xbone currently have no games of note. Neither did the PS3 for 2-3 years. A lot of people are grateful that Sony got their act together and started selling PS3s at affordable prices and started making games that were worth it.

"Since console is an investment, buy it now if you can. One year from now price will be the same, and you most likely will be running late and your backlog is too big at that point."

A backlog of worthwhile games to get through? That sounds like a great first world problem to have!

"Games being mediocre is subjective. Some people love Ryse and Knack. Just because some cynical journalist told you they suck, doesn't make it so. Hell even I from watching Ryse stream for few hours think it's trash, but who am I to tell to other what they should be permitted to liKe? if they like it, awesome."

That's a fair point but people have been hyped for the "next-gen" expecting new gameplay experiences. To accept mediocrity at this point is unacceptable and both systems lack "system-sellers". The gameplay that the launch titles have shown are stuck in the last-gen and the old ways.

"Just thinking of playing The Order, Infamous SS, Uncharted, Destiny etc make my penis wanna burst."

Neat.

"So to sum it up.This blog post is what I hate about this industry. Just one more cynical gamer that has no self respect for the industry that has given us so much."

And taken away so much. DLC, premium packs, buggy games that have to be fixed by patches, broken games that are released and never fixed, networks going down, broken consoles, no backwards compatibility etc and you wonder why people are very cynical when the industry no longer respects the opinions of their consumers?

Whatever.

Vojkan3797d ago (Edited 3797d ago )

yeah bitter much?

"Whatever" sums what I think of your post. After writing that wall of text you try acting cool on me son with that lame mid 90s "whatever"?

Yeah, not reading your comment due to acting like that. I tend to scroll the comment, saw that whatever, and decided I was done.

Show respect next time if you want to have debate with someone. I would have gladly engaged into one if you were acting like a normal person.

Maybe this teaches you a lesson.

And never forget your opinion doesn't matter as much as you think, so being snarky isn't going to increase your cred.

"yeah bitter much?"

Personally I think I'm a delight. I'm just looking forward to the further degradation of our pathetic and silly hobby.

"Whatever" sums what I think of your post. After writing that wall of text you try acting cool on me son with that lame mid 90s "whatever"?

At least I am not prematurely ejaculating over games that have yet to be released. Can't blame you for disregarding my post because you can't/won't debate me as you've already decided that your opinion is fact and any elitist contrarian who deigns to challenge you can safely be ignored.

"Show respect next time if you want to have debate with someone. I would have gladly engaged into one if you were acting like a normal person."

You can't debate me because you won't. Nor do you tackle the blog writer's points either. Why buy a new console when the multi-platform games available at launch are much cheaper on the older platforms? Because they look slightly better? £55 for a slightly better looking current-gen game is utterly ludicrous and you know it.

"Maybe this teaches you a lesson."

What lesson could I hope to learn from someone who prematurely ejaculates over the Order 1866 game that doesn't even have gameplay footage, an Uncharted sequel, a FPS and an Infamous sequel?

"And never forget your opinion doesn't matter as much as you think, so being snarky isn't going to increase your cred."

This is an open forum about videogames. If you don't like someone's opinion; you challenge them on it. Don't think for a second that I have any emotional attachment in this discussion whatsoever.

What you need to do is go and play some of these games, then answer your own questions as to whether or not they are worth it.

Killzone is shit hot btw. All the reviews focused far too much on the single player which i couldn't care less about but the online is amazing.

zero_gamer3800d ago

This is the first time I've heard Resogun is a mediocre game. Everyone else I know loves the game.
