Microsoft demonstrates Halo 4 streaming from the cloud to Windows and Windows Phones

TheVerge:

Microsoft is building its own cloud gaming service. Company officials demonstrated a prototype of the service during an internal company meeting today. Sources familiar with the meeting revealed to The Verge that Microsoft demonstrated Halo 4 running on a Windows Phone and PC, both streaming the game from the cloud. We're told that the concept service runs smoothly on both devices, and that Microsoft has managed to reduce the latency on a Lumia 520 to just 45ms.

This game should be released on PC...

JokesOnYou3882d ago (Edited 3882d ago )

"According to a report from The Verge, Microsoft held 'internal meetings' today in which it showed the 343 Industries shooter - currently only available for Xbox 360 - running on Windows-powered phone and PC devices as part of a demonstration of a new and as-yet unnamed 'prototype' cloud technology."

-Maybe it will. Whats interesting is this use of the cloud and the potential benefits of this new "prototype cloud technology" if this is legit. As much as some say the cloud is all PR smoke from micro, I think it will prove to be a great resource for gaming in a variety of ways.

Bigpappy3882d ago

Hopefully they could use it to let me play my digital collection from 360 on my X1. That would be a neat gift that I would very much appreciate.

NatureOfLogic3882d ago

Sony have Gaikai which was doing this before Sony even bought them. MS saying that the cloud will improve graphics is PR smoke. Cloud gaming is nothing new. Fanboys only pay attention to things that have been around for awhile when their favorite company speak of it. MS is hyping old news. So, yes It's PR smoke.

NateCole3882d ago

streaming games from the cloud is nothing new. Heard of onlive and Gaikai?.

malokevi3882d ago (Edited 3882d ago )

@natureoflogic

Halo 4 being streamed to a smartphone using azure... PR smoke?!

I'm not even sure how to respond to that...

UltimateMaster3882d ago

Yeah, Sony announced they were going to be able to stream their games on smart phones at their reveal using Gaikai.

AngelicIceDiamond3882d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

E3 2014 maybe?

That would be a great event to showcase this. That is if they fully come through with it.

EDIT: Logic failed, and failed hard on that entire statement, Seriously you should erase that and try again lol wow.

@Nate Yeah we know its nothing new nobody here said anything about it being new or anything.

Evilsnuggle3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

Jokes steaming games is not new nor does it improve graphics over standard Internet. It send info and buffers like a video on online with buffering enough lanetcy can be over come. Steaming games is not improving games are real time and have bandwidth and latency restrains no matter what microSCAM says. its not possible over standard Internet. I have read alot of networking web site articles explaining why it not possible over standard Internet
In real time you have to send info the GPU not CPUs that microscam have has to process then send back to you before the next frame of a game over and over again. Not possible over standard Internet also Microscam owners or as cloud CPU bank not GPU bank.

gamertk4213881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

@evil Steaming games may not be ideal, but they do retain more vitamins and nutrients that way.

n4rc3881d ago

@evil

You have little to no clue what you are talking about..

Cloud processing is a data stream.. 1s and 0s.. Bandwidth has little to do with what they are advertising.

If you can stream a full game in real time then how the hell cant you stream cloud computed instructions for the console to process locally.. Rather then use up local resources to do the calculations..

Save your fanboy rants and move along

AngelicIceDiamond3881d ago

This is a very modest comment thread here except for a few fanboys but that's nothing compared to this.

http://n4g.com/comments/red... Seems to me Xbox fans are way more mature than the other fanbase.

Is it immature that I brought this up? Sure but the comments are such night and day I had to compare.

WeAreLegion3881d ago

Xbox fans are more mature?!? Both groups are equally immature. It's not like two completely different groups of people chose Sony or Microsoft. They're all the same. Go to a Driveclub YouTube video. Go to a Forza 5 YouTube video. Horrible trolling from both sides is present.

Bundi3881d ago

All these billions in profit they keep making has been dumb luck?

jmc88883881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

Well Windows and DOS wasn't created by Microsoft, so yeah, I'd say that it was dumb luck they acquired those franchises. Because basically they ARE Microsoft. Everything else that came after is because of that.

Not dumb as in they didn't know what they were doing was going to be very profitable, but dumb as in someone was dumb enough to let go of Windows and DOS and Microsoft was the beneficiary of some moron allowing them to buy it.

As for Office, it was always MS response to Applesoft.

So yeah, I'd say most of their business IS dumb luck.

Shadowsteal3881d ago

Microsoft has cloud gaming through Azure
Sony has cloud gaming through Gaikai

Here's the difference

Eventually both services will hit phones and tablets. For Sony the most comfortable boxes to stream to would be the PS4, PS3, PS Vita TV, and above all the PS Vita. Why? Controllers we all love and buttons we love pushing.

For it to be viable to work on Microsoft's front they need to create something to allow customers to use a controller or make their version of PS Vita Tv. Because Halo 4 with touch screen controls? Ew don't make me barf.

Software_Lover3881d ago

......... You can use wired/wireless 360/XBone controllers on any windows device that has a USB port.

As far as cell phones go, you are right. They will need to come up with a solution. But to be honest, I'm not streaming those types of games to my cell phone in the first place.

mhunterjr3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

"Microsoft's demonstration included a Windows Phone with a Xbox controller attached through an accessory"

That's the best solution as they already have attachments that can work with most cell phones. I also wouldn't be surprised to see a iPhone controller styleperipheral eventually

DeadlyFire3881d ago

You are forgetting Sony also mentioned the PC As does Microsoft.

Basically if your a PC gamer in about 1-4 years you will be getting Xbox and Playstation exclusives tied into Cloud services available to play at your desk or on your phone. Win/win for PC community if they have bandwidth.

http://www.vg247.com/2013/0...

here's multiple sources for your tiny mind.

They announced this long before microsoft...every day its looking more and more like xbox ones "cloud" is more cpu processes and streaming....just like sony....only they didn't make as big a deal out of it.....

Tctczach3881d ago

Gaiki "can" put ps3 games on smartphones? Please provide some proof to that. I don't think it is that ready for that if it isn't even ready for Europe. And they have fiber optic cabling. Hahaha

DeadlyFire3881d ago

@Tctczach You are aware that a cloud service is basically a mini App that is put out. It can fit on any device once its up and running. It streams from one device to any other device that accesses it. It could run on the PS3 and X360 if they wanted to allow for that. Say they release a version of their cloud service on the PS3/X360 next year with only demos of PS4/1BX games available for consumers to try out to inspire next gen sales.

Its nothing to do with cabling that is slowing Sony down. Its just server infrastructure in Europe isn't ready for Gaikai. Sony is building server centers as well you know. That takes time.

AznGaara3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

Microsoft's senior director of Xbox, Albert Penello, said "it could be more complicated things like rendering full games like a Gaikai and delivering it to the box"

I wonder how many ppl will ignore this. Oh wait.. we just read the article title and comment. Whoops. My bad internet.

DeadlyFire3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

You can't BS us.

Azure is nice, but so is Gaikai, OnLive, OTOY, NVIDIA Grid, and the inevitable others.

Game streaming is a relatively simple cloud process. Its just framerate vs. graphics quality with the bandwidth you can expect some delayed input. If its good enough though it shouldn't matter to much to have small delay. Wireless controllers are 200-300 ms for X360/PS3. 45ms isn't bad. :)

Mystogan3880d ago

Except Azure probably has more than 10 times the servers than all these services combined. And I'm not joking.

DeadlyFire3879d ago

You mean it will in the future. Microsoft doesn't have all of their claimed 300,000 servers ready. They are still building server centers. They bought the whole industrial park in my county and it has been in the works for awhile and will be for at least another year or so for whatever they are building there.

MultiConsoleGamer3881d ago

Onlive did it before Sony and before Microsoft.

And everyone mocked them.

Now idiot fanboys are praising their favorite team for doing the same thing they once mocked.

In before " b-b-b-but this is somehow different and better because the company I support is doing it now!"

rainslacker3881d ago

They mocked onlive because it wasn't considered a very good service, and IIRC it had shoddy customer service. Never heard anything bad about Gaikai, never really paid attention until Sony was rumored to be buying them.

I still don't care either way, it's nice they have it, but I would prefer hardware BC unless I can stream for free games I already own physically. Otherwise it appears cloud streaming will offer some improvements to Digital distribution in general.

Oh right...sorry I forgot you have no real argument to make. Call everyone a hypocrite and call it a day. No reason to really think of a good argument.

In fact no reason to even address the topic at hand when you can take a jab at Sony fans.

To take my own criticism to heart

On topic: Cloud streaming is a neat feature. I'm glad MS is possibly going to offer it to those who want it.

MultiConsoleGamer3881d ago

Most of those same fanboys you mention never actually tried Onlive so they were in no position to judge.

And the quality of Onlive isn't the issue here, they still got there first. Deal with it.

Also, its painfully ironic and quite telling that when I said "hypocrite fanboys" you thought I was only talking about Sony fans, even though I mentioned both teams and this article is about Microsoft, not Sony. Insecure much?

So your whole post is nothing more than a thinly veiled personal attack. So now I have proven that you are the one without any real argument. Just childish whining.

rainslacker3880d ago

Guess I've been told then. Sorry, but knowing your past comment history, it's painfully obvious what you mean when you mention fan boys.

And you've really proven nothing, I have no reason to personally attack you, all I do is point out how you more often than not call out fan boys because you have no real argument. If you had one, fan boys wouldn't even come into the discussion.

The hypocrisy card has been played out along with the fan boy card, so why does everyone keep clinging to it?

MultiConsoleGamer3880d ago

You should know all about my past comment history, you've been stalking me with your other account for quite some time.

Welcome to the ignore list.

And you're right, you've been told hard and now you're just blathering and making yourself look even more foolish.

Ohlmay3881d ago

Sounds incredible, Halo 4 on my smartphone, that would be fantastic! I hope 360 and PS3 games will be streamed to PC's soon, I'd love to play Last of Us and Halo 4 on PC :)

Neixus3881d ago

sony talked about streaming games to PC, microsoft haven't,though.

Ohlmay3881d ago

If they could Cloud Stream to a smartphone, what's stopping them from streaming to a PC?

DeadlyFire3881d ago (Edited 3881d ago )

Microsoft is to lazy to actually make a PC title. So streaming the X360, or 1BX version to PC would be a slice of cake for them. Also with their own cloud service on PC they could setup something similar to Steam, but for Cloud streaming games. As Cloud streaming gives them a right to charge you for their service.

So they are attempting XBL Gold Round 2 for PC users in the future. Be warned. This time though you get actual Microsoft games on the platform. So Idk if its worth it or not just yet. We will have to see it running to determine that. Hearing that Halo 4 is on it could mean PC users get actual up to date Microsoft IPs on the PC. I just wonder if this means they are thinking about selling games on the PC in retail/digital form.

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo1d 21h ago (Edited 1d 21h ago )

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus231d 15h ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville1d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

KwietStorm_BLM1d 7h ago

So you do understand it or..?

rokos1d 5h ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

Markusb331d 4h ago

i think you are really missing the point

VariantAEC19h ago

@romulus23
That is not why MS buys studios. They might continue to buy because it's about taking that sweet sweet IP out of the corporate husks of their acquisitions.

Xbox isn’t a separate company from Microsoft. It’s all Microsoft.

Abear211d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

Let’s be real, this is the media spinning all the acquisitions and liquidations of said developers and spinning it to make M$ the villain.

This was bound to happen, a bigger slice of pie and cut costs, when the games come they stand to make more and that’s their agenda—it was the writing on the wall when the sales went through and legally all those who approved the sale and mergers knew this would happen.

Snowflakes need to realize business is ugly and you can cry all you want but this is how capitalism works. And it works.

That said, M$ needs to steer the narrative and grab hold of all this, make their plans known, hype the hell out of all those dead IP’s they plan to revive, and be honest about the timeline. This is likely to involve mobile and IP on other consoles, and most people realize that.

The problem is this company is incapable of being transparent and seems to often want to dissuade and confuse is customer base. The lack of E3 has hurt Microsoft and I don’t think they know how to properly or effectively market their brand anymore.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 19h ago

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot1d 23h ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

VariantAEC19h ago

Years?

Try several decades, and in the gaming space 2.3 decades.

Jon615861d 4h ago

You do realize this happens in ALL industries? Or are you just saying this because it is Microsoft? In any case I feel for those that are being let go but the trch industry is suffering right now.

jwillj2k423h ago(Edited 23h ago)

This absolutely does NOT happen all the time. Let me know the last time 1 company with a terrible product track record spent 100 billion onto acquire MULTIPLE successful companies in under a year only to shut them down and stop making their products regardless of how successful they were. Not merge them, completely shut them down.

And you can’t use Microsoft in your example.

Notellin1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

Class action lawsuit? The law is on their side and protects them at all costs. There are no rules to protect the people at the bottom.

jwillj2k423h ago

Not true when it comes to mass layoff do your research.

RNTody1d 23h ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead1d 13h ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya1d 10h ago (Edited 1d 10h ago )

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage1d 6h ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.

anast1d 23h ago

Good thing the bosses of all those small studios made their money.

glenn19791d 4h ago

I just don't have any idea what they would do , they have done sooo much damage on their xbox brand, they have a show at July or June I think, but will it even matter even they show amazing games, idkn

True,

But they may as well get it over with. Whether it happens now or later, the burning is going to hit the same.

LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow3d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1823d ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie2d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.
