Xbox 360 US sales in July 2013 cut nearly in half compared to 2012

While Microsoft is preparing for the launch of the Xbox One in about three months, at least in some parts of the world, the company is still selling its nearly eight year old Xbox 360 console. This week, the company announced that it sold 107,000 Xbox 360 units in the US in July 2013, but that number is well off what sold just a year ago.

Well yea. xbox one is around the corner. no one wants to buy current gen now.

I know i wouldn't. I'd wait and save up for next gen consoles.

Theyellowflash303924d ago

I don't know about that, the economy is bad in the US. It could be people have less money as well.

The Xbox One will sell well at the start, but $500 consoles don't have a good track record of selling well after the initial launch period.

SeriousSam3924d ago

That's not it. The US economy has been in the shitter for 5 years. I'm sure gamers are saving up for next gen. Bad economy or not, gamers will find a way.

Darrius Cole3924d ago

The US Economy has been down for about 7 years, not 5 years.

And it still won every month in a row for that Year straight. Imagine how bad Sony and Nintendo consoles numbers were compared to last Year.

Terrible.

Hicken3924d ago

The Wii has likely done extremely poorly, since there's literally nothing coming out for it.

But what do you base your assumption on for the PS3?

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF3924d ago

PS3 has lost to the 360 for over 30 months in a row in the USA for NPD numbers. If there low over the year for MS, and MS has always led over Sony, then Sony's are at either equal to their numbers, or lower. They have been beaten for years straight in the USA by MS.

Hicken3924d ago

But you said to imagine how bad they were compared to last year.

What were last year's numbers? And what if Sony was only a few thousand behind? It wouldn't paint nearly the negative picture for the PS3 as it would for the 360.

The PS3 has been selling more strongly overall than the 360; it's simply been a more stably selling system. Odds are that it didn't drop nearly as much as the 360 did, even if the drop was enough to still allow the 360 to outsell it.

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF3924d ago

Stop lying. The PS3 has not been selling more strongly than the 360. That's BS. Do you not see what article you're in? It's an NPD number. The PS3 hasn't won in over 2 years in a row and counting. No matter how you try to spin it for your Sony side you are lying through your teeth.

Sony is not selling stronger than MS in the USA.

If the 360 numbers are down and it's still beating both consoles... the other console numbers are down too.

Fact.

I think there are plenty of people who buy game systems "late." There are different audiences.

insomnium23924d ago

Out of steam AND a new console in the horizon. Sales will flatline pretty soon.

GiantEnemyCrab3924d ago

A big price drop could spur sales again. Remember the PS2 has been selling well most of the PS3's life

Pancit_Canton3924d ago (Edited 3924d ago )

Since Microsoft already stop supporting the Xbox 360 compare to Sony and the PS3. What's the point of actually owning one since the Xbone is already in the horizon.. Unless, you need another one for replacement since the old one broke again.

dark-hollow3924d ago

When did the 360 stopped being supported?

Rainstorm813924d ago

Besides the familiar sequels and XBLA....MS hasnt had a decent new IP since what? Alan Wake?? In 2010?

Besides i thought everyone was in agreement that Microsoft has long since moved on to the X1

shivvy243924d ago

Look at this year , x360 got gears while PS3 got gow, sly, tlou and to come are beyond 2 souls, gt5 , puppeteer and a ratchet and clank game

thetruthx13924d ago

NatureofLogic would post this because he wants to have a baby with Sony Lol

This is obvious seeing how people want new tech

Ms hasn't abandoned the 360 at E3 they confirmed they still have hundreds of games coming out for it

I personally think this gen lasted 2 years too long

Time for new graphics and gameplay

kreate3924d ago

"Ms hasn't abandoned the 360 at E3 they confirmed they still have hundreds of games coming out for it "

that's good. I'll be waiting right here.

No_Limit3924d ago (Edited 3924d ago )

OK, it was still in first place and the best selling home console in the US for what now, 32nd consecutive months now? So if MS is down, then everything is also well down from the previous year. It is only logical that sale would be low for all current systems due to next gen is coming.

LOL, I see this was submitted by NatureofLOgic once again, what a shocker!!!

Now MariaHelFutara is M.I.A, someone got to take her place as N4G's right hand man to find these ridiculously headlined Anti-Xbox articles. It is literally like Shao Kahn having Qaun Chi replacing Shang Tsung as his advising sorcerer in MK.

There are other countries you know. Just saying. U.S isn't the only one.

No_Limit3924d ago (Edited 3924d ago )

I live in the US and I can care less about how XB1 is performing in Norway or Timbuktu. By MS getting a large percentage of the pie in the US, it is guaranteed that games and support will remain strong.

Price Reductions Available Now on the Digital Xbox 360 Store - Closing July 29, 2024

Xbox 360 launched 18 years ago and was a generation-defining console that invited many people to jump into gaming for the first time and connect with friends around the world. We’re thrilled people continue playing their favorite Xbox 360 games on Xbox 360, or on newer consoles via Backward Compatibility for supported titles.

"we believe in game preservation"

Remember the media reaction when PlayStation wanted to shut down the PS3 store (but then kept it open)... where is that reaction here?

CrimsonWing693m ago

What are you asking? Like, if people got pissed at Sony for that? Because they did. We also got pissed at Nintendo when they did it.

You’re getting a chance to buy what you want before they close it. Moving forward digital stores should work like Steam. It’s just in this beginning they made it platform specific and closed off. A hindsight in their part and it sucks, but what is the percentage of people buying anything off these stores and what is the cost to keep the servers up?

I get it and yes making strives so this isn’t the case every gen we go into is absolutely a must. I mean PSN on PS3 is so convoluted to buy anything since you can’t use a credit card. Vita store is gone. It’s going to go away eventually.

RIP Xbox 360 digital store and all its games.
It really grinds my gears that they are waiting till 10 days before closing to give the best discounts and the list as of now is 100 or less titles from the massive 360 library

Phoenix7626m ago(Edited 25m ago)

I should have enough points by the weekend to get £25 credit off MS, (hardly ever spend money on xb1), might look at a few of these.

DivineHand12518m ago

The Xbox 360 store was one of the only advantages the Xbox Series consoles had over the PS5. When I got my series X, I spent more playing Xbox 360 games vs current-gen Xbox games since that was the golden era for Xbox and several titles had enhancements such as 4k resolution and fps boost.

Closing this store will now only benefit the competition.
