Why PS4 is all about the second screen – E3 pushes companion apps hard

OPM: One of the bigger surprises from E3 has been the enthusiasm with which developers have embraced companion apps to manage and, in some cases, play PS4 games. Sony have pushed Remote Play on PS Vita hard and after seeing demos of multiple second screen applications on PlayStation 4 it looks like the idea is going to be big.

I'm getting Microsoft Surface next week just for this reason. It is useful in game, and you can play games remotely. Pretty insane.

Transporter473969d ago

There are so many better tablets out there and you want one of those?

NewMonday3969d ago

@malokevi
SmartGlass works on iPad and Android you know.

Temporary3969d ago

I would definitely do more research before buying ANY Microsoft product. There's a stigma that's not going away anytime soon attached to any M$ product purchase.

Mounce3969d ago

I advise you do Proper, educated research into products instead of conforming to materialistic desire with groundless research and/or knowledge. Browse tech and brands outside of those you're used to, see what you come out finding....

DivineAssault 3969d ago (Edited 3969d ago )

Do what you want but i highly suggest you do your research before buying any microsoft tablets..

On topic, im glad theyre doing this. Its going to be real cool to see them use these dual screen features with vita on blu ray movies as well.. Games will prolly be stats, maps, inventory, etc for now.. Still, i think having a real time map on a second screen is fantastic in games.. No more pausing, waiting a few seconds between each input to actually get to the map, then resume playing.. It was HORRIBLE in AC3.. Hopefully AC4 uses the vita to do the same features the wii u has on its gamepad.. On top of remote play with a decent range

N4g_null3969d ago

The question is do we have to pay for ps plus to use it?

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos1d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers1d 5h ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken15h ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

Take my social security and bank account numbers too! Here’s a picture of my wife and our address.

phoenixwing1d ago

Cmon where's the pictures of your children. Don't hold out on them.

H91d 1h ago

At this rate I feel Sony will eventually sell a room to play games in it where they can monitor your every breath

jambola21h ago

I genuinely get a bit worried sometimes when a friend says something that could be offensive In a party
Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

SegaSaturn6691d ago

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle23h ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.

Sony Could Increase Your Game's Difficulty If It Sees You Complain About It

Sony has recently published a new patent that wants to dynamically handle the games' difficulty and gameplay based on the player's emotions.

jznrpg1d 17h ago

This is something I might use. Sometimes I play some good games but they don’t have difficulty option and are a little too easy.

Profchaos1d 16h ago

Souls games will be like that players struggling make it harder

PassNextquestion1d 15h ago (Edited 1d 15h ago )

I think if used correctly it could work well

jambola1d 12h ago

cool idea
cool idea for horror games especially
the way it's explained here sounds like it could never be forced hopefully, so that's ok with me

Wait. I don't get it. I reported on something that I recently noticed. I did mention in my article that I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't gone to play The Division 2. That said, if this was nearly a week ago, I wouldn't know, as NO ONE REPORTED ON IT! Not IGN. Not Gamespot. Not Kotaku. No one.

You got people here complaining that there are any real gaming journalists and game journalism sucks, but when someone is acting, doing something to make something known to the public about what a company is doing. What do you do? You poke fun at it. What is it that people want? Do you want to complain for the sake of it? Or do you actually want people to do something to make those who aren't in the know aware of the shady stuff that's happening and to sound the alarm?

ravens5214d ago

It's the "oh well" setting in on digital users. They don't care they don't own their stuff for some odd reason. 🤷🏽.

FullmetalRoyale14d ago

Good for you! People sometimes just feel the need to show how little they actually have to say. Very respectful dressing down, btw, which is another thing we need more of.

fan_of_gaming14d ago

I appreciate your article,
- "If this isn’t considered both a “WTF” moment and setting a dangerous precedent, I don’t know what else it would be"
- "it could also signal other publishers that removing games from our accounts would be okay"
- "Maybe those firmly against this digital future have a point after all"
- "This. Is. Fucked. Up."

As someone against an only-digital/streaming future for entertainment content (movies/TV shows/games/books), it feels like talking into a void about the points above on this website, or on Twitter, or with my friends, etc. People don't get it. I'm strongly contemplating whether this will be my last generation of PlayStation & Xbox consoles (I'm confident enough that Nintendo's next system will still support physical media and that their 1st-party games won't have online-required installation or usage restrictions).

He is one of the long running trolls of this site, he never says anything positive. Every single one of his posts are either incorrect or flat out stupid. Pay him no mind.

Yet people will sit here and still say that digital is better 🙃

TheSenorCheese14d ago

Welcome to the era where you no longer own your games.

gvrd001913d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I'm so done with Ubisoft, removing games one paid for is a new low...
Bye Ubisoft,
You've done f#c*ed it up !

Chocoburger13d ago

This was me 9 years ago, when I realized all they wanted to make were filler boring games that are packed with micro-trash-actions.

Snooze! Moving on from Ubi-junk!

vTuro2413d ago

I see they're trying their best to surpass Activision Blizzard for being the most hated gaming company. Keep at it, Ubisoft, I believe!
