4A Games Explains The Lack Of A FOV Slider; "not as simple a thing to implement as it might appear"

DSOGaming writes: "After addressing the Ranger Mode DLC issue, 4A Games and Deep Silver decided to shed some light on why Metro: Last Light does not feature any FOV slider. According to the devs themselves, a Field Of View slider is not ‘as simple a thing to implement as it might appear‘."

Why exactly would you want to change it anyway?

john24018d ago

because it's too low at its default settings and makes people sick

UnHoly_One4018d ago

Seriously? I've never heard of such a thing.

I mean, I've heard of people getting motion sick from games, but never thought that the Field of View would have anything to do with it.

I just can't imagine why that would make a difference.

Anyway, I was just curious, so thanks!

Letros4018d ago

Yes, it makes me nauseous if the FOV is too low, it's because I'm used to focusing on something when turning in FPS games, its harder to do with a low FOV + fast turn speed(from a mouse)

NYC_Gamer4018d ago

Because it can cause some gamers headaches

SilentNegotiator4018d ago

Play Borderlands 1 for 5 minutes. You'll see.

UnHoly_One4018d ago

I think I played Borderlands for something like 600 hours. lol

I'm not sure what I should have been looking for.

SilentNegotiator4018d ago

It's what you don't see; a FOV larger than looking through a porthole. From 3 feet away.

GillHarrison4018d ago

A players FOV depends on the size of his screen and how close he is to it. You usually want the illusion that you are looking in through a window into the 3D space, without this it gives players a nauseous sensation. It is very important to include these options on a PC game as you are usually up close to the monitor where as on a console you are usually much farther away.

arronax-14018d ago

You're playing it on consoles are you? If you are, take the difference between people who play on PC to how people game on consoles. People usually play from a distance or on a couch while on consoles. On PCs you're obviously more up-close and vision is more likely to have an effect on people.

aLucidMind4017d ago

But wouldn't this be more the PC gamers' own fault in this case, considering most TVs nowadays lets you use it as a computer monitor? They could just hook up the tower to the living room TV and play the same distance as console gamers do.

"Good news is that with the upcoming update, 4A Games will give PC gamers the ability to change the FOV via the game’s cfg files. However, this workaround may trigger a number of issues listed above. Still, it’s better than nothing, so kudos to 4A Games for at least doing that."

CheexInk4017d ago

These complaints are entirely because they didn't develop it with different fields of view in mind, not that including variable FoV adds tremendous amounts of workload if you are keeping it in mind during the development process.

porkChop4017d ago

It is if you do it right from the beginning. If your game isn't set up to support it and you try to add it later then obviously it will cause problems. Solution is just do it from the start. As PC devs they should have known better.

If FOV is that thing I seen in Black ops 2 last weekend when it was free then that should be in every shooter. You can see alot more of the enviroment and less gun. I do not require it but it is a nice feature in fps.

Metro Video Game Series: A Comprehensive History

The Metro video game series started with a humble b-list title, before building a strong fanbase and becoming a pioneer in the industry.

Never got into Exodus, but 2033 was excellent.

kevco3397d ago

Yeah, Exodus just didn't grab me either, sadly.

I absolutely loved 2033 and Last Light, however. Played them both on 360 and then again with the remasters!

anast96d ago

I just started it and it is already miles better than the first 2 which are dated.
