The rumour mill has started to turn again with the news last week that Apple had patented a new multi-player system. This coupled with the patent of a wireless controller has got peoples tongues wagging as to what possibly Apple could be up to. Game Centre improvements? Or are they developing a console? Let’s work on the assumption of the latter, seeing as I wrote a lengthy how to improve Game Centre post last month.
These are my ideas of what I believe could give Apple a stable platform to build from.
Retro gaming console emulator apps are now welcome on the Apple App Store and can even offer downloadable games.
From systems that could keep your beer cool, to oddities trying to get in on the popularity of VHS and laserdisc, you’ve got some very, very weird video game consoles out there.
I had the LaserActive... it was a nice collectors piece but not very practical. Especially when it came to needing recapping. I think i paid all of about $50 for the floor model from an incredible Universe back in the day. I ended up selling it many years later for $300 at the time due to it needing a new laser and the aforementioned recapping.
An honorable mention not on the list would be the VM Labs Nuon. It basically looked like any regular DVD player but it had ports on it for controllers to play specific games. one of which is still exclusive to it with Tempest 3000. It also offered nuon enhanced DVD movies with extra content not accessible by regular players.
Epic Games winning its cases against both Apple and Google is shaping the way forward for the future of mobile gaming.
I feel alot of mobile gamers are kids which will at some point probably turn to console or pc. Mobile gaming just doesn't cut it for me.
I don't fancy it tbh but I do think Apple could give the industry a good shake up and that's no bad thing :)
April is gone. Please. No more.
the media really needs to give it up. They might make a controller, but it will just be to compliment existing products. I don't get whats so magical about the term "console" either...
I'd love for Apple to make their own console. We know it'd be beautiful, reliable, fast, well-supported and of high quality in every aspect.
I reckon Apple could form a couple of amazing game studios to get some great exclusives on their platform and it'll be popular & powerful enough for 3rd party developers to justify supporting it. I think it would be great to have another competitor in the home console market, then I could buy the PS4 & iPlay (instead of buying M$'s next console, well maybe when it's cheap as hell).
Would love to see this happen
