#1: There's no such thing as a "console makret"

lol

irepbtown4022d ago

The Next Xbox could possibly dominate the Makret...

Just not the Market.

Bobby Kotex4022d ago

If N4G had a better way to filter out these crap "articles" this would actually be a decent site.

Wagz224022d ago

Lol yes the console we know nothing about will totally dominate next gen braaa! Ridiculous, who approved this crap?

iJihaD4021d ago

Some one should write an article: "5 reasons why should n4g doesn't accept 5 reasons articles".

-__-"

loulou4021d ago

ijihad

the only problem is that n4g loves top 5s. that is why there are so many of them.

just wait until the obligatory top 5 reason why the ps4 will dominate that will come later. then see the lovefest in the comments section

do you people still want to know something about x box... dont waste your time.. dont click on these articles so they dont go to hot news and I just cant ignore this and not comment this stupidity I just sayd!

Those reasons seem to me as the 5 reasons why it WONT dominate next gen. I want to see what MS brings to the table on May 21st before assuming anything.

3-4-54022d ago

It may be the best selling.....but it won't dominate gaming like I hoped it would.

You can only spread yourself so thin and I think they are doing that will all the options they are trying to pack into one box.

The more their is, the more that could go wrong and since it's all connected it could effect everything.

What if another RRoD type of incident happens?

They would then have to deal with more complaining because they have more customers, thus creating more negative around it because more people have been effected.

Yetter4022d ago

Hard to say. MSFT is a pretty hugh company with a lot of resources so it is hard to say how 'thin' they are 'spreading' themselves.

jeffgoldwin4021d ago

What if another yrod occurs? Its not sony or ms actually even makes 1 part in their consoles. They are just promoters and contractors for all the parts to 3rd world countries to mass produce them on the cheap.

InMyOpinion4021d ago

@3-4-5 - Do you seriously think they would even risk repeating something like RROD? Can you imagine the backlash that would generate? The more likely scenario is that the next Xbox will be extremely durable from the get-go.

Bigpappy4022d ago

You guys keep trying to downplay Kinect, but it will be the secret sauce this holiday season.

UnHoly_One4021d ago

I love when all the PS fanboys on here get all defensive about US sales figures.

Let me ask you this, just out of curiosity. (Those of you that live in the good ole USA, anyway.)

My question is, what difference does it make to you if the Playstation sells 20 or 30 million consoles in Japan? Seriously, what does that mean, exactly? It benefits you how? I get that you want your company to do well and make lots of money, hell, I do too. I like playstation games just as much as the next guy.

But I'm going to be honest here, I couldn't give two shits how much any console sells outside of the US. It doesn't affect me at all. I care how much it sells HERE. How much a company focuses their attention on ME, not somebody across the ocean.

I care how many people are going to be online in MY AREA, so I don't have a shit connection playing multiplayer. I care about how much shelf space the stores in my home town dedicate to the more popular console. I don't give a damn if you can't find an Xbox at the local GameStop in Tokyo. I'm never going to be there anyway.

I could go on and on, but I'm sure I already have about 40 disagrees from people that haven't even read this far.

Anyway, my point is, the Xbox brand is just more popular in the states. Whether it will stay that way is anybody's guess, but if I had to bet on it, I'd guess the chances are pretty good.

If you think the CoD crowd that plays online shooters and nothing else is going to jump ship to switch to the console with a crap online service and a terrible controller, I think you're going to be in for quite a surprise.

awesomeperson4021d ago

"switch to the console with a crap online service and a terrible controller"

I read your whole comment, but that little aside generally ruined the rest of it.

How can you judge the online service, or the controller, when presumably you haven't used either for the PS4? I do get your possibly referring to the mentality of the "CoD crowd" but still.

I was very happy with PSN this gen, my updates were slow however PS+ made up for that, and did more for me than any other service has.

IRetrouk4021d ago

I agree with everything you said bar the very last bit, psn is fine and plays online games exactly like the 360, there is no real diffrence other than party chat, unless you have ps+, i use both all the time, the experiance is the same.

AtomicGerbil4021d ago

Bit of a rant, but had a good point. Then made the whole thing irrelevant with the last paragraph.

UnHoly_One4021d ago

Perhaps that last line was a bit much, and you're correct, I haven't used the controller or the online service for PS4, I'm just assuming it will be largely the same.

But honestly, in my opinion, when it comes to online multiplayer, Xbox Live dominates PSN in terms of connection quality and features. There is a reason millions of people are willing to pay for it.

And it's also just my opinion, but the Dualshock stick layout is awful. Even PS fanboys will usually say that the 360 controller works better for shooters. Which just so happens to be the most popular genre among US gamers.

I'm not trying to start an argument here, I only have one more bubble to defend myself with, anyway. lol

Sorry if I offended anyone with the bluntness of my previous comment.

LoveOfTheGame4021d ago

Good follow up point. I agree that Xbox Live is better than PSN. Not that it blows it out of the water, it's just whether you would pay for a somewhat better experience or not pay for a decent experience that gets the job done.

As for the controller, it is still opinion but most will agree with the Xbox controller being better for shooters. Still if you have had Playstation since the first one, it would be easy for you to be used to the Dualshock design.

UnHoly_One4021d ago

I am used to using a Dualshock.

I just VERY much prefer the left stick in the "upper" position.

Contrary to popular belief, a lot of people would have encountered the left stick in the Xbox-style "upper" position before we ever held a Dualshock that had it out to the right.

The N64 controller for example. Obviously that is a weird controller design, but based on how your left hand held the controller while using the Analog stick, the Stick would be "up" from your thumb, like it is on an Xbox controller, not to the right like it is on a Dualshock.

But that's neither here not there, it's all down to personal preference, and like you said, it's not SO different that you can't learn to adapt.

@ "GrownUpGamer"- "-PS One vs Nintendo (JUST TWO consoles and PS won a lot of fanboys like you)"

So why do you have to exclude the Sega Saturn then?. Also there was Dreamcast during the PS2 era. Just because Sega stopped making consoles doesn't mean they shouldn't included, & I'm still a Sega fan, always liked Sega & Sony more than Nintendo. "PS won a lot of fanboys like you" yeah no wonder PS1 sold over 100m, don't you think?

"-PS two vs Nintendo vs Xbox(Xbox THE ROOKIE late to the fight. PS brand won more fanboys even though the xbox was superior)" Just FYI, the PS1 was a rookie console as well, & they managed to beat both Nintendo & Sega, the Xbox was a superior console, no doubt about it, but Sony played their cards right with the PS2 with their games lineup, & popularized the DVD format.

"-PS3 vs Nintendo vs Xbox360 (xbox second console with 77.2 million vs 80.4 million)" So was PS second console with over 150m units, plus PS3 released $200 more expensive, a year late, hard to develop for (with the 360 releasing nearly 4 years after the original Xbox which is too soon to market), & still managed to outsell & surpass the 360 within a year difference, there's nothing to be noticed about.

& don't let me get started with the PS3 fanboys thing, as if there isn't a worst Nintendo, Xbox, PC fanboys. Each company has their own share of fanboys. One thing for sure, is not that those other people hate PS fanboys, they hate the PS brand, that have always being the case whether you like it or not, that's why they talk crap about Sony & their consoles. As a PS fan, I won't deny Sony made their own share of mistakes & some things that clearly they shouldn't have done, but you can't pretend as if Microsoft & Nintendo has their own share of missteps. I know the last sentence Muerte put in his first comment is a bit arrogant, but let's be honest, 3 successful home consoles, 1 successful handheld, so yes, being a Playstation is a very good reason Sony hasn't met the failure column just yet. It remains to be seen what are Sony's plans with the PSV & PS4, time will tell definitely, it all depends on how each company plays their cards, but as of right now, Nintendo isn't doing that great ATM, but the tables can turn, still room for them to improve.

showtimefolks4021d ago

I just got one questions for all the bad rap we playstation gamers get how come I see so many core gamers defending kinect 2 as if kinect 1 actually brought us something good to bran with?

It's just amazing how xbox360 was doing just fine and the message was we are the system for gamers to seeing wii succeed and selling well and it became a family system

But whatever next Xbox coming out the same time as ps4 won't have the same advantage that xbox30 had so now it will be great competition and end result meaning we will get better content and better support

See how I made a comment without calling anyone fanboys or an,RS maybe some of y'all should learn something

Gamer Muzz4021d ago (Edited 4021d ago )

@Muerte2494
You're posting Shipped PS3 numbers, not sold.
And yes, that is combined with recent PS2 sales figures.
Whats the purpose of that?
"One word PLAYSTATION"?
The question of whether the PS3 has actually outsold the 360 is very debatable.
In November of 2012 SCE announced that they sold 70 million units and they just announced that in FY 2012 they SHIPPED 16.5 million.
Nut nowhere have we seen sales figures. I'm still waiting and I reserve judgment until rock solid figures are released.

Also, what good is a higher number of sales figures when the console has lost more than any console this gen? By 2009 the PS3 lost over 4.7 billion While the 360 Lost less out of the gate and has been profitable since FY 07-08.
The 360 has also dominated the PS3 in the largest market in the world (America) out selling Sony by about 15 million consoles. Thats going to hurt Sony when the next gen gets going.
As for the Wii, well it was profitable since day one turning Nintendo a net revenue of 8 billion in it's very first year.
Sony has lost this gen man. The only thing they may potentially have when all is said and done,is a higher number of sold units on websites and blogs that fanboys use to say it's the best console ever. But, even that will still only secure them 2nd place to Nintendo.

Also,
"Microsoft thought casual was the way to go and it didn't work out for them"?
So what about "Move"? Did it work for Sony?
Kinect sales hit 24 million last February.
You may want to check the figures, but I believe that's about 10 million more than the Move sold. Although it's hard to tell because Sony will only release the number of units shipped and not sales to consumers.

In the end, The PlayStation brand is great and I won't say that the PS4 can't be #1 next gen. (More power to Sony if that's the case.)
When it's all said and done, You'll do well to find a bigger PS1, PS2 fan than me. But facts are facts, Sony hasn't cleaned up this gen as they did the two prior.
They have a hard road coming this gen. You Sony fanboys can thank god that the MS brand doesn't sell in Japan because so far, that's what has really helped give the PS3 a real shot at 2nd place this gen
If numbers matter more than anything (as they seem to) for you guys, then hope like crazy that MS never gains a foothold in Japan and Europe. Because if they do that AND maintain their popularity in the States, it could spell real trouble for you.

As for me. I have them all and will again next gen. I just want to play games.

The Next Xbox will definitely kick PS4 and Wii U butt!

DonFreezer4022d ago

Wii U not so much since it's not directly competing with it.But just for the sake of ps drones on here it will crush PS4 no matter what.

kayoss4022d ago (Edited 4022d ago )

uh.... It cant even crush the PS3 or xbox360. Hell, it can barely outsell the PS vita What makes you think it will do better for the next gen. Currently the Wii U are lacking 3rd party support. Once the PS4 and 720 comes out what makes you think that 3rd party support will spend the extra money, time, and resource to down scale a PS4 and 720 game to port on the Wii U?

Honestly I wouldnt be surprised if nintendo released another console in the next 2-3 years to compete with the PS4 and 720. Because as it stands, spec wise it may be very hard to port games to the Wii U.

famoussasjohn4022d ago

But the Wii-U is next gen..right?

JeepGamer4022d ago

Sure it will.

Just like this gen where you can either say the 360 barely finished ahead of the PS3 in spite of a year head start or actually finished behind the PS3 in spite of a year head start.

And this doesn't even include the fact that Sony botched the PS3 launch, giving 360 another advantage.

Its going to be close between PS4 and 720 market share wise

Muerte24944022d ago (Edited 4022d ago )

Microsoft has the market share they had now was because they rushed to market with a faulty product. People denying RROD having something to do with Microsoft's numbers are should know something. RROD weren't covered under warranty until July 2007. Xbox360 launched November 25 2005. So for a nearly 2 years, RROD wasn't covered. Gamers have no alternative until November 16, 2006. If you console had RROD you had to trade it in towards the purchase of a new one.

http://www.joystiq.com/2007...

OT: People have other choices from the start now. Sony hardware has proven to be more reliable than Microsoft's. Sony also has alot of exclusives. Microsoft is going to have to blow me away May 21st if they want to keep my business. COD exclusive DLC and paying for Xbox LIVE will not convince me. They need to upgrade XBOX LIVE SILVER to include Hulu/Netflix access and online play. Show me compelling new IPs. Sony has EU and JPN, so Microsoft needs America to stand a chance.

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo1d 17h ago (Edited 1d 17h ago )

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus231d 11h ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

KwietStorm_BLM1d 3h ago

So you do understand it or..?

rokos1d 1h ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

Markusb331d ago

i think you are really missing the point

VariantAEC15h ago

Xbox isn’t a separate company from Microsoft. It’s all Microsoft.

Abear2123h ago(Edited 23h ago)

Let’s be real, this is the media spinning all the acquisitions and liquidations of said developers and spinning it to make M$ the villain.

This was bound to happen, a bigger slice of pie and cut costs, when the games come they stand to make more and that’s their agenda—it was the writing on the wall when the sales went through and legally all those who approved the sale and mergers knew this would happen.

Snowflakes need to realize business is ugly and you can cry all you want but this is how capitalism works. And it works.

That said, M$ needs to steer the narrative and grab hold of all this, make their plans known, hype the hell out of all those dead IP’s they plan to revive, and be honest about the timeline. This is likely to involve mobile and IP on other consoles, and most people realize that.

The problem is this company is incapable of being transparent and seems to often want to dissuade and confuse is customer base. The lack of E3 has hurt Microsoft and I don’t think they know how to properly or effectively market their brand anymore.

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex1d 20h ago (Edited 1d 20h ago )

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot1d 19h ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

VariantAEC15h ago

Years?

Try several decades, and in the gaming space 2.3 decades.

Jon615861d ago

You do realize this happens in ALL industries? Or are you just saying this because it is Microsoft? In any case I feel for those that are being let go but the trch industry is suffering right now.

jwillj2k419h ago(Edited 19h ago)

This absolutely does NOT happen all the time. Let me know the last time 1 company with a terrible product track record spent 100 billion onto acquire MULTIPLE successful companies in under a year only to shut them down and stop making their products regardless of how successful they were. Not merge them, completely shut them down.

And you can’t use Microsoft in your example.

Notellin20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

Class action lawsuit? The law is on their side and protects them at all costs. There are no rules to protect the people at the bottom.

RNTody1d 19h ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead1d 9h ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage1d 2h ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.

Good thing the bosses of all those small studios made their money.

Until the company changes how they go about business, nothing will change

glenn197923h ago

I just don't have any idea what they would do , they have done sooo much damage on their xbox brand, they have a show at July or June I think, but will it even matter even they show amazing games, idkn

lodossrage1d 2h ago

True,

But they may as well get it over with. Whether it happens now or later, the burning is going to hit the same.

Reality is the ONE move that can alleviate a lot of this is the one move they can't make. Remove day 1 from gamepass.

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie2d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow1d 11h ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney1d 6h ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno2d ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno2d ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno2d ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?
