Hacker says homebrew on closed consoles no longer appealing

According to the hacker, the Wii hacking community that so enthusiastically created the homebrew channel on the original Wii no longer seems interested in doing the same for the Wii U, or any other console for that matter.

This is ironic because I think homebrew sells consoles these days. This is why new contenders (sort of) like the OUYA are desirable.

ogwilson4007d ago

Homebrewing was mainly good for two things -- emulation and enhanced media capabilities. Newer devices don't need the latter thanks to improved firmware, and the former can be facilitated by any decent computer these days. It's just not as important or desirable as it used to be.

PopRocks3594007d ago

I think you hit the nail on the head. Having omitted those former pros, the only cons left is the potential piracy that could ensue from hacking the console system.

Kennytaur4006d ago

Most consoles come with official emulating capabilities nowadays too.

darthv724006d ago

the potential for homebrew used to sell consoles. I can remember doing homebrew on my DC and xbox and the psp but....trends change.

OG nailed it with what he said. Closed consoles of previous generations may still have some bustling homebrew communities but the trend just isnt there for current systems.

Mainly the reason homebrew cropped up was adding features to platforms that were missing them or finding new ways to extend the platforms usefulness to the end user.

Now, systems like the 360 and ps3 and wii-u are offering those previous homebrew ideas of emulation in more legit and official ways. No need to mod your system anymore unless you want to bootleg games.

The next generation looks like it will offer even more improved flexibility than ever before.

mrbojingles4006d ago

I imagine homebrew sells as many consoles as Okami did,...

If these hackers (often pirates) don't want to reward developers with their money why don't we assume they just buy used consoles anyway?

3-4-54006d ago

OUYA will be out of business within 3 years.

Subzero2004006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

aren't you being a little too generous?

yewles14006d ago

Oh no they don't, they're not that slick. They always say something like this to get the heat off them while they tear consoles a new asshole while noone's looking...

N4OGs4006d ago

lol. hombrew and the like has become lame even on cellphones a lot of people i know just like to stay vanilla with the iphone or android devices. why do all this custom messing around when a firmware update comes and wipes it all away or adds cool features to your console. legit everything is making a comeback because of convience and quality.

Kennytaur4006d ago

Yeah, I used to be very pro-homebrew and such a few years ago, but today I can't be bothered. There's no point other than piracy, and I'm now quite against that too with the only exception being television shows with no other means of viewing apart from waiting a year for it to come to your channels.

As you said, today it's more convenient to do stay legit, which is quite the paradigm in only a handful of years.

darthv724006d ago

its sort of like the dvd ripping craze of several years ago. There were so many programs on the market to let you rip a movie and copy it. Now, prices of those dvd movies have dropped to make it easier to just buy the movie instead of going through the process of ripping it, then burning it.

New encryption techniques tend to make it not worth the efforts anymore and many have switched over to streaming media in some cases. These conveniences are replacing the risks people used to take to save a $ while at the same time making it more affordable to be legit.

Pillsbury14006d ago

If they want to.tear the asshole of.a console its for.one.thing: piracy.

Pillsbury14006d ago

Its not desirable as it.once.was considering everithing nowadays runs emulators. cell phones, tablets and computers can all run emulators well, homebrew is.less and less attractive.

Pillville4006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

Why homebrew when, for a small entry price, you can put your creation on app stores (xbox, apple, android, etc...) and make some money?

Oh_Yeah4006d ago (Edited 4006d ago )

Well...the homebrew channel from the Wii still works on the Wii U. What's the point in making a new one?

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos1d 7h ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto1d 7h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger881d 6h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).

ChasterMies20h ago

Trevor in GTA 6 is a sadist and psychopath who dabbles in cannibalism. Should be top of the list. These game “news” sites should hire people that know games.

Wii U games that still haven't been ported to Switch

The Nintendo Switch is potentially nearing its lifespan, and several Wii U games haven't found their way over as ports yet.

I think it's better to leave games like AC: Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash forgotten on the Wii U. Best case, they are mediocre games; worse case, they are very bad. It was a dark time for the Wii U, and the first only exists to sell Amiibo cards, whereas the second was put together in a couple of months with a shoestring budget, and it shows.

The rest of the list does have some really cool games, though. I would love to see a remake of Star Fox Zero with decent controls, and Xenoblade X doesn't require that much modification to work.

How would XCX work without dual screens functionality?

Cacabunga4d ago

Same as Paper Mario color splash. One of the best wiiu games and getting even better with dual screen. Same reason why i prefer Splatoon 1

This article leaves out Nintendo's most controversial game to date devils Third.
I personally found the cover system really fun in that one compared to at the time most fps games completely lacking one.

Stevonidas4d ago

Devil's Third is HIGHLY underrated.

repsahj4d ago

They should remake Starfox to the switch 2. Very beautiful game during gamecube days.

Chocoburger4d ago

Kirby is always ignored or forgotten by people, so good to see it mentioned here.
Play Kirby Canvas Curse on DS, and then play Rainbow Curse on Wii U, they're really fun and unique 'platformers' without any actual jumping.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
