The Last of Us Hands-on Preview | El33tonline

Oliver at El33tonline writes:

"The studio’s latest game, The Last of Us, sees Naughty Dog delving even deeper into the realm of realism, exploring more sombre and serious themes than any of its previous games while dialling back on a lot of the bombast and flair that characterises the work that the team is known for, resulting in a much more deliberately paced adventure than before with incredible new characters and recognisable, intense set-piece moments.

Is this new direction for Naughty Dog one that its fans will enjoy, or will we soon be yearning for snappy quips from Nathan Drake to deflate the tension?"

"One might be tempted into labelling The Last of Us a survival horror game, and while standard tropes synonymous with this genre are definitely present, including scarcity of resources, sparse enemy encounters and foreboding environments, this description doesn’t quite ring true for me. I never felt completely at the whim of the world and the mood is lightened by the presence of other characters, even if they are controlled by artificial intelligence. I would say The Last of Us is something new – an amalgam of classic survival horror and the action adventure games that Naughty Dog knows so well.

That doesn’t mean The Last of Us is a walk in the park, psychologically speaking. In addition to the violent melee attacks and scuffles which can see Joel repeatedly beating an enemy’s head against a wall, the sound work in the game is terrific and terrifying, reminding me of Condemned with its muffled and bassy footsteps ahead of you, above you and all around. The screams, groans and grunts of creatures lurching towards you is also horrifying and even after beaming a Runner in the head with a thrown bottle to disarm it, it’s an unsettling proposition to follow that up with a flurry of fists as it snarls at you."

and this
"
If you’re looking forward to the next globe-hopping and light-hearted Uncharted adventure from Naughty Dog, then you won’t find it in The Last of Us. The developer’s next title is an intimate, intense action adventure game set against the sombre backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world dotted with survivors desperately struggling to make it from day to day, while contending with rapidly dwindling resources, inhuman creatures, bandit raids and a militarised government."

awesome :)

I am way more hyped for TLoU and DS2 than any other upcoming game. Really want to play those two.

The sp already seem to be top notch, now im curious to see how the mp will be. I have a very very good feeling this mp is going to be a sleeper hit the same way uc2 mp was and still is (matches are still very easy to find with alot of ppl still playing)

The Last Of Us Series Has Remarkable Potential For Spin-Offs

Najam from eXputer writes "It's time fore a new installment in the series, not another pointless remaster."

anast84d ago

They are working on something new. Not to be rude but it is impossibility stupid to think ND next major announcement is going to be a remaster or their next Last of Us entry is going to be another remaster.

AlterRecs81d ago

I think this is in response to them releasing a remaster for the sequel, a game that didn't need a remaster.

Basically a "why did you put out a remaster no one asked for when you have all there options available"

anast81d ago

They remaster is to put out something quick while they are deving new stuff. I don't get how people can be so static.

AlterRecs80d ago

There's no news about a third game being in production, you're just assuming that they're working on something that they aren't

anast80d ago

When they release the news to start the hype-train, you can give me my props then.

DrDoomer84d ago

I want an alternate timeline spin-off, where part 2 never happened.

CrimsonWing6984d ago

They’ve already done Remasters of 1 and 2… what else is there to Remaster?

AlterRecs81d ago

Considering they remastered the first game twice, who knows lol

CrimsonWing6981d ago

That was a Remake. I guess they could do that to 2, but man…. They should wait a couple generations so it can look like a major upgrade.

The Last Of Us Online Devs Celebrate Their Experience With The Canceled Game

The team is sad for losing out on such a great project but celebrates its growth because of spending time on it.

Chocoburger128d ago

All they had to do was make a basic online mode like their previous games. Instead they wanted more money and choose to go live service which makes games worse in my opinion.

What a waste of time and money, what a shame.

seanpitt2384d ago

I can't wait for season 2 so they can kill Joel off in the first 2 episodes!! Then it will be just Abby and Ellies revenge plot!

Something is telling me that this won't happen though because it wouldn't make sense, oh wait

Linzoid128d ago

Not sure why they didn’t just make Factions 2. There was no need to make it a live service.

TLoU Factions was a great addition such a shame they couldn’t be bothered to remaster that for PS5 considering the crazy high price tag of the remaster of a remaster…

anast128d ago

This is something to be celebrated. This studio is smart and they get it, even factions 2 wouldn't've have been worth the time. I am surprised they didn't just remaster the first one though, but actually how popular was Factions?
