Why I don’t want the next generation of consoles

Metro - I’ve owned or had access to every console generation since the 8-bits. I also owned a Commodore 64 and dabbled with PC gaming in the 90s. My main platform this gen is a PlayStation 3, and I’ve also got a Wii and 3DS. I wasn’t excited about the PlayStation announcement and have now realised this is because I just want what I’ve got and don’t see a need for a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox 720 either. This is a very odd feeling since I’ve always wanted new hardware.

...Gamers are looking forward to it and can't wait to enjoy it. Sure there are some great games still to come on PS3 and 360, but I still want the new experiences of next-gen. It's going to be an exciting year!

The main hold up I have is that it seems most of what we have been told (granted, very little at this point) regarding innovation this round is leaning more towards monetary acquisition, propriety, and non-gaming applications. So far, I have no reason to upgrade. It's early yet though... hopefully this changes.

What innovations are people looking for, really? People expect way too much from these consoles that it boggles the mind. Pcs have been way ahead of consoles, so why haven't they innovated. Seriously, what do people want?

It's probably too early to get this info; but hearing/seeing more about why these consoles are going to be fun will sell me on throwing $400+ down more than knowing how these consoles are going to revolutionize the way we purchase/receive games.

People have no idea what they want or what is innovative, it's a meaningless buzzward now.

I wish the word would go away, because i have seen very few things this gen i would define as innovative not wii mote, not kinect nor move.

A couple games utilised new techniques or focused on new gameplay concepts, but i dislike using the common sheep prases like innovative, innovation.

Because they have been so throughly ground down into nothing-ness by repeated and improper overuse. Especially by nintendo fans.

Are you saying the 7th gen needs a reboot? I'd rather it just moves on and tries to do things better next gen. I've enjoyed quite a few games this gen, but overall there is a lot of stagnation in new games...outside some amazing exceptions of course.:)

I'm saying that the 7th and current console cycle was rushed into without a full understanding of it's requirements. That on top of that it was tailored towards specific types of games. High profile and big budget as well as polygon and realtime. Anything below a AAA production became crippled because no one wanted to spend the extra money to make a B or C level title really work, but that didn't stop them from being made.

You aren't forced to buy the next generation of consoles, and the current consoles will be supported through 2015, so you have plenty of time to decide or wait for price cuts or a good library of games.

Just read the story. I can understand some of the points he made. The jump this gen won't be as drastic as it was last gen. But it will still be a jump. And I will be buying a PS4. But that's not to say I won't be a little sad to say goodbye to my PS3. Which is my favorite console of all time. Until the PS4 arrives.

This guy can go suck it. Current console hardware has been holding back developers since 2008. As a PC gamer it's frustrating as hell knowing the untapped raw power that modern hardware has. Better textures/draw distance/resolution is nice but the base games are all designed to run on 360/PS3.

I think everyone really underestimates what new consoles will be capable of. 7 years is a long time in hardware development. The graphical leap won't be as big as before just because of the uncanny valley, but it's all the other things that really matter. More things going on in bigger worlds. More interactivity and reactions in those worlds.

All the moaning twats about next Gen. Games are what counts , consoles are only a tool to supply them. I like Sony games, I want ps4. If you like Halo, get a new Xbox.
I guarantee there will be huge numbers of great games, with great visuals and better services/ more options.

If this next generation of games is essentially just prettier versions then that makes me less excited to be part of it. Everything unfortunately these days evolves around people's expectations and for the most that's this desire for even better graphics. And that's fine but nothing else is evolving to the extent the amazing visuals are.

I'm getting bored of the same experiences every time and simply giving us new stories or layers on top of existing templates will one day be the reason this industry crashes. The casual audience is also a fickle one so there isn't any guarantees there either leaving this support and fascination with visuals will end up hurting the industry. Something will happen eventually and then just maybe this medium will grow up

I have been saying this stuff since people started talking about the next gen. I can get more enjoyment out of snes and genesis games then this gen. At least all the last gen systems prior to ps3 and xbox had loads of enjoyment even if you beat the game 2,3,4 times over. All this gen was about was graphics its time to get back to epic story lines that will blow your mind away!

Right that is a small list of games since most nes/snes games had little if any story, and typically if you want epic storylines you should be looking at jrpgs and a few handleful of wrpgs.

Yeah i played all those games yrs ago as in there specific generation, and the gameplay has gotten better because of more advanced graphics.

Surprise surprise a retro pride gamer post on a article about the next gens not interesting a guy. You people need to stop letting nostalgia cloud your eyes, i was there it wasn't that superior to this gen, minus jrpgs being rather sparse. Every gen had incredible titles mixed in with shitty or okay games.
