Is is too Early for the Playstation 4 and Xbox 720?

The gaming industry moves fast. The Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 original style consoles are old to us gamers now. It’s all about the new style 250GB Xbox 360, and the super slim Playstation 3. However it would seem that the next generation of these consoles will be with us as late as 2014. But is this too early?

While I still am impressed time and time again with what developers are able to accomplish with the aging tech of the Xbox 360 and PS3, I do feel it's time for an upgrade.

While the Wii U introduced some new and exciting features, People are still wanting that extra boost in power to be able to play grander games. It's not so much that the graphics will be that much better, although native 1080p/60fps would be much appreciated. But the increase in power will allow for larger scale games with bigger environments, more physics being handled and better effects and lighting.

However, since the Wii U does not double or triple the power of the existing consoles, an argument can be made by the manufacturers that there is no real rush to get the next gen machines out. Since the games that the 360 and PS3 will put out can be comparable to what the Wii U will be able to handle, They can make the argument that now is not the time.

I am still sure we will see at least one of the consoles by early 2014 at the latest. More likely 2013 holiday season.

I agree that FPS is important, and games with larger and open landscapes would work well, but look at Red Dead Redemption.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4122d ago (Edited 4122d ago )

"Red Dead Redemption."

It's easy to be impressed with something when you don't what is actually possible.

What would Red Dead Redemption look like with 4gb ram and a new gpu/cpu? I can't wait to see next gen batman!

morkendo234122d ago

I'm begining to see stupid arse articles we read before back for more hits but with similer title .

Picture_Dancer4122d ago

"the Wii U introduced some new and exciting features" O_o what features?

Neonridr4122d ago

are you kidding me? The gamepad gives us new ways to play games. The gamepad gives us the ability to play the game without the need for the TV. If you don't think being able to go lie down on your bed and continue playing your console game (not a handheld game) isn't exciting, then I guess we will agree to disagree. The fact that my wife can watch TV but I can continue playing my game is an amazing feature. The Miiverse also created a sort of twitter like universe where people can comment and post messages on the fly to a community board. In a world driven by social media I guarantee you will see a feature like this on both the next Xbox and PS. And Nintendo TVii creates an amazing experience for people who like to watch sports. I have been using it while I have been watching Basketball and Football games, and the gamepad screen offers a great secondary to the main TV. It has updated stats on the fly, shows you information about current plays and drives, and also lets you comment and post messages in a group chat area. Not to mention it's pretty cool that I can control my cable box and TV with my Nintendo gamepad.

That's just my opinion however, and if you don't see the benefit in anything I have mentioned, then so be it.

zebramocha4122d ago (Edited 4122d ago )

@neon picture is some what right even though he/she is trolling, the wii was suppose to be a game changer but the tech wasn't what people expected,Sony those have home that can and does have some of the feature as miiverse but is not seamlessly integrated with the ps3.

EddieNX 4122d ago

I agree with that now for wiiu. But I think the Wiiu is going to demonstrate Mind blowing graphics at some stage. Once developers take full advantage of disk storage and the graphic capabilities. You're gunna see Zelda tech demo graphics with a Giant world.

Neonridr4122d ago

Oh we all know the graphics are only going to get better for the Wii U as the developers learn the ins and outs of the system. I laugh at anyone who disagrees with that fact and will point them to Xbox 360 launch games with the super realistic graphics of titles like NBA2K6 or Peter Jackson's King Kong. Amazing how far games have come on the Xbox 360 in 7 years.

Could you imagine putting up an Xbox 360 launch title like Gun against a Wii U launch game like Assassin's Creed 3?

Give the Wii U some time and we know it will only get better. It'll just depend on how significantly more powerful the other two next-gen machines will be to determine if the Wii U will hold up. But I think with the Nintendo 1st party titles finally appearing in HD, we should be in for a real treat regardless.

EddieNX 4122d ago

@Your reply below.

The way I see it is this , It's very Simple.
Nintendo isn't interested in Pushing tech TOOO far at the expense of their own company Cough Ps3 Cough. They probably think Sony are retarded for selling the PS3 at a $200 loss , that's just not plausable for Nintendo.

It looks like Nintendo is thinking ''as long as we can demonstrate a clear leap in graphics albeit a smaller one than competition and add in some innovative new ways to play , And make it as good as possible without losing money on the device.

Rge 3DS for example demonstrates a clear graphical leap over the PSP and is 3D , has two screens , Gyroscope , AR etc.

Resident evil on 3DS destorys the PsP's graphics , but not quite as much as the vita destroys the PSP' graphics.

The wiiu is to ps3 what the 3S is to PSP. A clear generation ahead.

It's time for new consoles PS3/360 have been on the market for over 6 years

searchbuzz4122d ago

But don't you see the point that the consoles we have include almost as good technology as Next gen will.

GribbleGrunger4122d ago

Perhaps the wording is a little awkward but in essence what Xtr3me is saying (and I'm assuming this is correct) is that next gen will not be as big a leap as many would think. If my assumption is correct and that indeed IS what he meant, then I'd have to agree.

JohnDread4122d ago (Edited 4122d ago )

No, I disagree with that. It is pretty much impossible that the tech in the current consoles are almost as good as next-gen. Electronics evolved crazy fast and what probably has changed the most is the architecture of the hardware. See GPGPUs and such. Those things make the difference in power. And of course, the launch titles and also the titles in the whole first year after launch will very much look like 360 and PS3 games. That's a natural thing. I don't know if you remember, but there is a huge difference between a 2005 360 game and a 2012 360 game. I mean really huge. It took developers 6 years to max out the power in those things and the same will happen to next-gen. You'll laugh at Battlefield 3 or whatever you consider super good looking right now, when you see the Nextbox/PS4 games of 2016+.

And that is exactly why there needs to be next-gen right now. The current gen is just maxed out.

searchbuzz4122d ago

GribbleGrunger --

Yep that is pretty much what I was trying to get across with this article.

I wish people.will.stop.asking these questions. Wii to.wii u is next Gen for Nintendo. We will.see a leap.for next Gen consoles, and it will be significant. Perhaps not to PC gamers but definitely console only gamers. I have seen games played on thepc and I only wish current Gen systems could look the way those games look. The witcher 3 is a perfect example. The good news is that consoles will be able to better take advantage of their hardware than a PC would.

New consoles are needed and Assassins creed 3 is a perfect example of why. People who say last of us could argue otherwise forget that the game is using uncharted's engine; I don't think it will look that much better than uncharted. I don't know about Beyond because it looks freakin awesome.

We need new consoles for game play, graphics, and everything between.

chestnut11224122d ago (Edited 4122d ago )

I rather have them released later these year ., maybe December., and give Ps3 and XBOX 360 their last year. Sony should focus on marketing their Vita 1st at the start of these Year., At around of that Time. (Dec 2013), People already have their budget to own 1 of these 2 powerful machines.

The_KELRaTH4122d ago

I'm sure if we were still using Atari 2600's there'd still be the same "is it too early" blogs!

searchbuzz4122d ago

This was merely an opinion, and we are more than just a blog.

sway_z4122d ago (Edited 4122d ago )

@Chestnut1122

Agreed PS4 for release Dec 2013...but IMO Sony shouldn't waste too much resources on Vita individually, but should instead market both PS3/Vita cross play functionality to counter the Wii U casual market.

With the PS4 looming and PS3 still relevant...I can't see how Sony can afford what you're suggesting.

Sadly, Vita missed the boat...Sony should have marketed the hell out of this powerful device day one, instead of this 'Damage Limitation' system they have in place. It's still too early to call the Vita's fate, but it stinks of PSP failures to capture significant third party support.

Many will probably disagree, but I always thought after PSP, Sony should have left the portable market and concentrated on making the PlayStation games catalogue available to as many devices as possible. Given that tablets/smart phones have now exceeded or at least on par with Vita technically....

Vita was very short sighted of Sony....

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies7h ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken3h ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing6918h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker18h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing6918h ago(Edited 18h ago)

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos15h ago(Edited 15h ago)

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt6h ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken3h ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

6 Fun Games Where You Actually Play As The Bad Guy

While the mainstream media always sees things turning in favor of the hero, here are 6 games that own being a bad guy.

Profchaos1d ago

Pretty much all of these games listed are based around a morality system you don't have to be bad and you don't have to be good.

It seems to have left out some real amazing games like red dead redemption 1/2,ass effect and true crime la/ny

Tacoboto23h ago

Armored Core VI?

Ok, I'm really missing something here. Just beat chapter 3 earlier this evening, unlocked A-rank Arena fights. I'm not seeing or sensing any branching paths or morality system and I've done every side mission and arena fight available to me up to that fight.

Is something big coming soon to branch the story?

banger8823h ago

No mention of Grand Theft Auto? Saints Row (original trilogy), Manhunt? Also The Suffering (depending on the ending you get).

ChasterMies13h ago

Trevor in GTA 6 is a sadist and psychopath who dabbles in cannibalism. Should be top of the list. These game “news” sites should hire people that know games.
