This got me thinking: what do gamers actually want? Not that I don’t understand these views but with those two examples both Nintendo and IO Interactive seem to set their stalls out early and more or less told people what direction they were headed in. Yet people still seemed disappointed with what they got. So maybe the question isn’t what do gamers want but rather can gamers ever be satisfied?

"The Berlin-based (Germany) indie games developer Tarock Interactive today announced with great delight and happiness that their open-world survival/crafting game "Lost Legions", is now currenly in development for PC." - Jonas Ek, TGG.
TopSpin 2K25 Review - After a very long hiatus, TopSpin is back! Can Hangar 13 bring the venerable tennis series back to relevance?
because there's too many 'gamers', the law of large numbers.
Because 'gamers' like any other group are a grouping of individuals rather than a single entity. You're always going to find people who dislike a certain game or console just as you're always going to find people who like those things. There are people out there who hate Uncharted 2 and people who love Kane and Lynch 2.
By the way I wasn't being snarky just then. I actually enjoyed this article a lot and I think it gives some good reasons as to why the overwhelming reaction to things these days is often one of cynicism and hate. I just want to make sure we're not making the mistake I see made here every day of grouping people together and assuming they are all of one mind. There's always some ass here complaining, 'Hey you guys said you hated the design of that game and now they changed it you said you liked the old design' or 'You PS3 fans are complaining about the WiiU but when people said the same things about the PS3 at launch you disagreed with them'. As if every member of every group (that haven't even chosen to label themselves as such) should represent the ideas and opinions of everybody else in the group.
because their lives suck so they spend their time entertaining themselves by arguing over kiddy games.
It doesn't matter what you do, you simply cannot please everyone. Gamers are a unique bunch in that there are so many different games that cater to them and that have catered to them for so long. If something comes up that they don't like, the vocal minority make us all seem bad.
90% of gamers are happy.
But it's a small % of people who complain about EVERYTHING..those people also complain about games.
They just complain to complain.
