"Could Be Like Halo & Gears"
....so, it's a shooter?

What do Halo and Gears really have in common, other than being shooters? One is a very horizontal game (Gears) and the other is a fairly vertical game. You make Gears any more like Halo in gameplay and it isn't Gears. You make Halo any more like Gears and it loses many of its gameplay strengths.

Sounds like NowGamer just trying to bolster their obvious choice of favorite for next gen (since it will have an "X" on it, most likely) by hyping with two popular titles, excusing it with a random Twitter post.

ZombieNinjaPanda4181d ago

Exactly. Seems developers aren't capable of unique ideas anymore, so they just slap together something that seems to be a trend. Instead of coming up with their own unique ideas, they're just trying to combine two things which wouldn't work too well together to cash out easily.

SilentNegotiator4181d ago

Don't blame the developers just yet.

Nowgamer got that idea from a "twitter sleuth"; and being very.....eh, "oriented" towards a certain brand....they'll gladly spread the rumor to create hype.

rpd1234181d ago

Well both are sci fi shooters with alien races and bad ass protaganists. Personally, I think they should branch out from that though.

BertlSenix4180d ago

Developers try unique stuff

ON THE PLAYSTATION 3
Journey,Uncharted,Heavy Rain,Beyond Two Souls,The last of Us(a 2nd NEW AAAAAA IP from ONE developer),the unfinished swan and a lot more...

BUT WHAT DO "GAMERS" aka shitheads of this gen buy?CALL OF DUTY AND COPY+PASTE Garbage in general cause the justin Biebers took over.

Old McGroin4180d ago

@ BerttlSenix

The "unique" games you mention aren't as unique as you say.

Journey - third person puzzle game.
Uncharted - third person explore/shoot 'em up.
Heavy Rain - this gens version of the point and click adventure game.
The Last Of Us - another third person game with an AI partner.

All great games but nothing new, just spruced up versions of games from the past. Not too sure about Beyond and Unfinished Swan.

Uncharted might have exciting, spectacular set-peices but it's still a third person game with bells on.
Journey might have drop in/out co-op but it's still a third person puzzle game.

Let's face it, original ideas are few and far between these days.

Kingdom Come4181d ago (Edited 4181d ago )

I love how small a percentage of N4G Commentors read articles prior to commenting on them.

1) The Gears and Halo similarity is in regards to scale and genre. In regards to gameplay Gears and Halo hold massive differentiations.
2) This is by no means a confirmation of the unannounced games genre as this particular quote was taken from an "Internet sleuth".

Read the article next time.

well easier said than done. also if there already is gears and halo why would we want another game that similar. give us something new and fresh

i really hope MS takes advantage of crackdown franchise because that IP has a lot of room to grow and huge potential

3-4-54180d ago (Edited 4180d ago )

Yea I think we've gotten enough shooters, and maybe Dev's should focus on giving us combo/hybrid game types on the next gen.

* Give us more customization

* Give us more options

* Give us more replay value

* Give us Better Art Styles, and not just HD Brown & Grey graphics.

* Humans can see over 5 million different colors....Use Them !

* Give us good stories that aren't cliche.

* Give us something unexpected

Solid_Snake4180d ago

I am sure most will take that over a Wonderbook title any day. Some of you people try too hard sometimes for any of it to really matter.

mysterym4181d ago

Given what halo and gears did for console first person shooters and third person shooters respectively, i'm excited to see what emerges.

Jinkies4181d ago (Edited 4181d ago )

I understand Halo but what did Gears do, it pretty much had things that were done before like the over the shoulder gameplay from RE4 or even had things which during it's development at the time other games like Uncharted which was in development longer then Gears. already had the same ideas.

lastofgen4181d ago

Gears of War (2006) was unveiled and shown off at e3 2005 and Uncharted (2007) was unveiled at e3 2006.

Ben_Grimm4181d ago

Gears was still a huge success that further put gaming in the spotlight and became a staple/household name.

All games have ideas from others it doesn't mean they're bad or shouldn't be recognized. There were games before Uncharted that that did the same thing too. That arguement could be applied to almost any game.

SephirothX214181d ago

Come on now. Epic games are the creators of the Unreal Engine. Don't say that they're not creative.

Jinkies4181d ago (Edited 4181d ago )

@lastofgen

Just because someting is shown off and released first dosen't mean anything

As I said Uncharted was in development longer, Nolan North since he had played the character since 2005 when they brought him in to do the motion capturing, then they would of had to start planning it before they got to that development stage.

They started Uncharted under the codename "Big" straight after Jak 3 was finished and went gold. So that would of been October/November 2004

Uncharted was in development for longer and didn't release untill later because ND had to do the motion capturing which apparently took nearly a year to complete and thats just the mo cap.

@SephirothX21

What...when did I say they that. Please don't make crap up to try and start an argument.

maniacmayhem4181d ago

Good lord Jinkies take your own advice.

You don't think Gears was in development and planning well before 2006? It takes year(S) to make these types of AAA games.

And what does Uncharted being in development longer have anything to do with what Gears brought to the table? Nothing.

CalvinKlein4181d ago Show
Jinkies4181d ago (Edited 4181d ago )

@maniacmayhem

Don't come off as an arse maniacmayhem, thats how you went from 5 bubbles to 3, remember that.

"You don't think Gears was in development and planning well before 2006? It takes year(S) to make these types of AAA games."

Yeah but they didn't do motion capturing did they.

"And what does Uncharted being in development longer have anything to do with what Gears brought to the table? Nothing."

because people keep saying "Oh Uncharted copied Gears" all the time even though Gears wasn't shown off when Uncharted was 2/3 years into development. If it wasn't shown off then it couldn't of coped, people make out because Gears was released first that they didn't copy anyone despite Killswitch being a massive infuencea and RE4

EDIT

OMG thank you CalvinKlein...perfect timing, you've just help me prove my point. As I said above if Uncharted was in development longer how could it NOT "exsist" without Gears which probably hadn't even started development or was shown off

EDIT 2

"and sony puts out WAYYY MORE SHOOTERS than MS"

Are you serious...

Sony puts out more of everything...racing, platforming, third person shooters, RPGs, indie games etc. MS just does shooters

humbleopinion4181d ago (Edited 4181d ago )

@Jinkies
Wrong 1: Gears was already shown behind close doors to other developers before GDC 2005 - it was a selling point of the new unreal engine. And regardless of motion capture, ND didn't show any cover based gameplay until way after Gears introduced this mechanic.
And it was identical - with the exact same cover to cover manouvers, something that was never shown before gears. You don't have to be such a fanboy: admitting that Uncharted copied the mechanics from gears 1to1 is practically admitting a fact. It doesn't make any less of a game.

Wrong 2: Sony makes more shooters, hack&slashers and platformers. MS makes more racers, RPGs and obviously more indie games (not to mention the indie channel alone on the X360 has more games than the entire PS catalog).
If you don't count simply go to gamerankings.com and browse each platform by genre.

Hey, but that's pretty good trolling what you did here :) sidetracking the topic from the next-gen game a new studio is working on.
For all I care, this gen can die and it's time to bring out the next gen, so that' really good news.

maniacmayhem4181d ago

"Don't come off as an arse maniacmayhem, thats how you went from 5 bubbles to 3, remember that."

Funny how you know I had 5 bubbs even though your account was made this year in October. Which tells me this Jinkies must be a multiple account maybe from another that was banned or stuck at one.

You just remember that.

"because people keep saying "Oh Uncharted copied Gears" all the time even though Gears"

And nice edit after the fact that Klien stated it and who else says that Uncharted is a Gears clone and how is that even relevant to the topic of this article which you have still managed to not answer and continue to troll.

Qrphe4181d ago

So Uncharted is a copy of Gears because of cover mechanics?
Are you guys implying Gears invented the cover mechanic?

Are you the same people that say that Halo invented a lot of things of its own such as regen, driving cars, melee and grenade buttons?

Geezus

DigitalRaptor4181d ago (Edited 4181d ago )

@ CalvinKlein

Wow! Okay, so let's begin:

"uncharted was a copy of gears, without gears uncharted would not exist"

So Gears came out November 7, 2006. Uncharted 1 came out November 19, 2007 - a year later. You can't completely redesign your game and its gameplay to copy another game in the space of 12 months. Since Uncharted would've already been in the advanced stages of development with all its mechanics working as designed (after years of work following Jak 3), I don't think that's feasible. Though, even if they did copy Gears's cover mechanic, the games are fundamentally different in their design and gameplay elsewhere. So it's not exactly a strike against Uncharted or Naughty Dog. Nice try.

Killzone was a self-proclaimed foray into sci-fi from Sony's Guerrilla, going after the Halo gamer. No one is denying that, and it's well documented. I do like Killzone's more grounded background and gamplay which added something valid to the sci-fi shooter genre.

Resistance 1-3 is INSOMNIAC GAMES, not Sony.

All-Stars (and LittleBigPlanet Karting to some extent) is the game that Sony fans were actually asking for for quite some time, so your point as some sort of downside to Sony's developmental stirring pot is irrelevant. Gamers wanted it based on existing Nintendo games that they knew were good. They wanted it, they asked for it, they got it.

PlayStation Move was in development as early as 2000 with videos of proof out there on YouTube. Now I'm not saying Nintendo weren't also working on Wii as far back as that, but we have proof that Sony were working on motion tech before Nintendo announced anything of a Wii-mote controlled technlogy in development. This is just some more misinformation that you guys love spreading. We tell you the facts and now I'm convinced that you're just ignoring it to troll.

Sony creates way more shooters, just like with most genres by comparison to Microsoft, because they have more studios making games. Now that's common sense. When it comes to shooters, Killzone 2 is more highly rated than Halo 4. It's rated that same as Halo Reach. KZ3 is rated lower than Halo 4, but not much lower. Halo 3: ODST is rated lower than KZ3. I don't like using aggregated sites like Metacritic, but make of those stats what you will.

Sony's shooters are varied when compared in terms of background, story and gameplay. And they did put guns in inFamous, but it was the enemies using them. Cole doesn't need guns because he had fuggin lightning coming out of his hands. Idiot.

-----------------------
@ humbleopinion

I don't think Microsoft MAKES more racers, RPGs or indie games. They have and always have had third party companies making games exclusively for them, but not making themselves. Perhaps racers because of Forza and what was Project Gotham some years ago, but that's it.
-------------

I know this is ridiculously off topic, but just clearing things up.

Tr10wn4181d ago (Edited 4181d ago )

@Jinkies

"Don't come off as an arse maniacmayhem, thats how you went from 5 bubbles to 3, remember that."

Actually no, he went down to 3 bubbles because in this site your opinion must always be that Sony is Godlike and anything else just suck and is inferior and if you dont agree be ready for the horde of disagrees that awaits you, the bubble system is broken you can't let a horde of sony fanboys control your opinions because you dont agree with them i rarely post here because of that and i have 2 bubbles lol ready for one after this post.

Has for the topic i think Gears did alot for this gen lets face it Uncharted one was a ripoff from a lot of series especially tomb raider but it has things from gears, even tho gears was that great i like it alot and MS should stick making them.

Kingdom Come4181d ago

Actually, Gears of War had been in development prior to Uncharted's.
Gears of War started development shortly after the release of the original Unreal Tournament back in 1999. It was originally titled "Unreal Warfare" and was intended to be a large multiplayer title. Development was delayed and following the release of Unreal Tournament 2004, the titles development was resumed, taking on the new identity of Gears of War.

Uncharted: Drakes Fortune was in development following the release of Jak 3, of which released at the tail end of 2004, development hasn't begun of the game until the technical staff had been assembled, presumably making the starting date early 2005.

Gazondaily4180d ago

Lol Jinkies, you just got caught out really badly for your multi account making antics. For shame!

And regarding your point about Gears of War, I think it's safe to say, you have been well and truly schooled by manicmayhem and others.

Hicken4180d ago

You shouldn't even have bothered, Jinkies.

The same way they claim that "you can't say anything negative about Sony," that's also true in this, a Microsoft-themed article. No way would they let you see anything resembling "correctness" while you weren't kissing Microsoft's rear.

Simply put, they're not gonna hear it.

Imalwaysright4180d ago

Neither Uncharted and Gears are original or creative. They both copied concepts and gameplay mechanics from other games so who gives a shit about wich one came 1st? You know what came 1st? Killswitch, RE4, Pitfall, MGS, PoP etc etc. Those are the games that really pushed the bounderies and moved gaming forward and those are the games that ND and Epic copied. LMAO arguing about wich copy came 1st!

BTW @ humbleopinion Indie games made by MS? Really? Indie games? REALLY?!!

To all of you, who cares what came first, uncharted is ten times better than gears of war. Part one two and three, the awards speak for themselves. Anyone who says gears is better hasn't played uncharted. Plat-former/shooter/cinematic/ great writing/great voice acting. Gears just sit there and shoot. And i play all games own ever console including the wii u. So suck on that!

LAZL0-Panaflex4181d ago (Edited 4181d ago )

Uncharted 1&2 were great, but 3 was a letdown. Campaign and multiplayer bigtime letdown. If they just kept part 2's multiplayer the same and fixed the disconnects and added sprint it also would have been great,...but they chose to copy call of duty,...plus the graphics and textures looked not as good as the first two games,...i think maybe adding 3-d had something to do with that, because killzone 3 also did looked dummied down compared to the previous installment.

I dont know why you guys take these comments so seriously. Its not like you designed the games. You would think someone was dissin your mother.

Gears 1 had better graphics then part 2,...but part 3 was fixed nicely.

God of war was tight.

Halo was a "B" or "B+" maybe.

Resistance series was average although part 3 looked good.

Both infamous games were awesome.

Lesson of the day...both consoles got good games, competition is good for both sides, don't be a slave to a brand,...because quite possibly apple, samsung, valve, can come along and knock their dicks in the dirt. Every dog has its day.

Take the pebble from my hand grasshopper!

Lvl_up_gamer4181d ago (Edited 4181d ago )

The gears of war franchise is overall higher rated then the Uncharted franchise stated by the industry.

The gears of war franchise has sold more then the Uncharted franchise as voted by the gaming community.

I own both franchises and I prefer the gears franchise over the uncharted franchise....

If you enjoy the uncharted franchise over the gears franchise then that is simply your preference....but your opinion is far from fact and clearly you don't speak for the gaming community since reviewers and gamers have voted and they chose the gears of war franchise

cooperdnizzle4180d ago (Edited 4180d ago )

Level up gamer you are smoking crack. Uncharted has won ten times the awards gears has, and no you are flat out wrong, gears is not rated higher then the uncharted series. Go a head and flat out lie, whatever helps you sleep at night/. 88 to 91 gears. 96 to 91 uncharted 2, 94 to 91 uncharted 3. You do the math smart guy. And these are the metitcritic scores. Not to mention everyone knows uncharted two has won more awards then any game in one year ever!!!!!!

Kingdom Come4180d ago (Edited 4180d ago )

The Gears of War franchise has an average score of 92.67.
The Uncharted franchise has an average score of 92 precisely. (89 including Golden Abyss)

If you prefer the Uncharted franchise, that is perfectly acceptable, but don't attempt to belittle the fantastic quality of the Gears of War franchise.

More exclusives to bolster Microsoft's first party line-up is only a good thing in my opinion. They seem to be relying a bit too heavily on Halo, Gears of War and Forza, so something to add to that and provide an incentive to invest in their next generation console would do them well I think, especially since many people have doubts given their heavy focus on Kinect.

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo18219h ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie10h ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.
